Why is the Destiny community so toxic? A question from a new player.

I would like to preface this with the fact that I've been gaming for a long time and I've been heavily involved with various communities over the years. I have been a fan of Bungie for as long as I can remember. I ran a community called Arm The Flag during the Halo days and we got our Machinima work on the front page all the time. I was even interviewed by the community director, Urk at the time. I've seen issues left and right within games, their creators, and the communities around them and I know there is a mature/respectful way to handle them. I am late to the Destiny game as I just recently finally purchased an Xbox One and I was eager to jump into the Destiny community because I remember all of the fun I had back in the Halo days....well that feeling was soon squashed for me. Upon checking out the Bungie Forums and jumping on r/DestinyTheGame on Reddit for the first time a few days ago I was met with all of of this hatred and resentment towards Bungie for just about every little aspect of the game. Where was this beloved community that I remembered from back in the day? It was nowhere to be seen. Now I've seen the posts and arguments...I realize that veteran players feel shafted for the Y1 stuff taken away then brought back...that's some BS. I see the arguments against the RAF program...which I think is an excellent program and the people complaining about it come off as nitpicking self entitled children, but that's just my opinion. Regardless of your opinion instead of dumping toxic waste posts everywhere in the community about how Destiny is shit and you hate Bungie, and you think it should be this way....maybe you should look at a more constructive way. Where is the mature community that enjoys the game? Where is the mature community that instead of whining like little girls they start a meaningful discussion and possibly come up with something to present Bungie that voices the thoughts of the community as a whole? Turning this sub and the Bungie forums into a cesspool of negativity, complaints, and a whine fest will not help your cause. I love you guys...and I've loved my time playing Destiny so far, but I hate reading through all these crap threads day after day.

  • Ow the community is generally on the game having a great time. This is where the darkness resides and where everybody sacrifices their salty tears. Explains why everybody floats....

  • The reason for this is the way that Bungie communicates, and the extreme nis-hype at launch. The launch and underdelivery on expectations set the initial tone, and Bungie sub-par community engagement and management combined with the bugs and the fact that pvp and pve are hard to satisfy simultaneously make the player base irate.

  • The hate and toxicity has been introduced and continually fuelled by Bungievision and Luke Smith. Many of us have come to know that Bungievision and Luke Smith made Destiny for the sole purpose of trolling it's user base. It is the game within the game.

  • There's just way too many kids who have access to the forums nowadays. They scream the loudest because opinions are brand new to them. Additionally, children (or child-minded individuals) often model what is popular, and hating this game is extremely popular at the moment.

    • The community is toxic because everyone wants wants wants....and everybody thinks they're better than the next guy. Nobody can play and say good game, or help people unless there's a reward. Nobody is grateful for the content being put out, and everybody does what they can to complain about the smallest of things.. I pray that you will not fall into the toxicity. Stray from the usual path, play for fun, and just enjoy it...it's a -blam!-ing game yknow? It's here for our enjoyment. Maybe it's just me...but I'm tired of whiney ungrateful bitches. Idk.

      • It started out constructive at first. Then came the long periods where nothing got addressed. And when it was addressed, it was implemented poorly or the scope didn't actually reflect issues the community had. Basically, Bungie set a high bar then never even attempted to clear it, which again was their own fault for hyping a game that was not anywhere near what they hyped. And then there's the unforgivable. Breaking Vanilla out into pieces that have gotten us to here. So much of what we've bought was originally slated to be in just vanilla destiny.....

      • It's the Age of Entitlement. A different time than when Halo was at its best. This community is a microcosm of what the Internet is about today. Hateful tripe spewed from the safety of anonymity. You can still find some bastion of decency if you look hard enough. Don't lose hope, Guardian.

Because this game attracts ignorant and arrogant people. It's a console game that appeals to the masses and is focused around bringing in casual players who do not understand game mechanics or the delicacy of balance. There are also a lot of children and youngsters involved who have no idea how to have a reasonable conversation. These youngsters also have a trouble accepting their own mistakes and will most likely blame it on others or just disregard any intellectual argument made. In a nutshell, this game is monopoly with your typical middle school dropouts. That's my take. This community of this game has proven it correct.

      • Combination of bungie mismanagement/poor communication (this isn't halo where it's released and that's it, this game requires constant updates and tweaks), entitled generation of players, people play this game like a job so they are overly invested, and cuz Internet :) It's really tiresome to be honest and is causing me to spend less time here.

firstly, I only really know about Bungie from playing Destiny. I was always on PS and never xbox so never got into Halo. But I know of the games legendary status and the creators of it must have legendary status too. That there is the first problem, a game like destiny which had possibly the most hype/marketing push i have ever seen for a game and from a creditable developer, only raises the expectation immensely. But Bungie did not deliver on the expectation, Destiny fell short, massively short, of the expectation. Not mentioned over this first year its has also been clear Bungie have: used money grabbing tactics (cut content, emotes, the price of TTK, no dlc isolation), artificial increasing of the grind and gametime, and poor/slow weapon balancing So there's your toxicity. Induced by Bungie themselves really, when all these dirty tactics come to light you cant help but understand why this community is so toxic. One thing I can say though, playing with random people from this community in the actual game has been nothing short of a great experience I can count on one hand the amount of douche bags I've met in game. No super computer on earth could count how many douche bag there are on these forums.

        • Don't sweat the forums. Sometimes there is some pleasantness. Always keep in mind a satisfied customer is a quiet one usually but, piss a guy off for whatever reason and he will shout from the rooftops and frequently use profanity.
