Why is the Destiny community so toxic? A question from a new player.

I would like to preface this with the fact that I've been gaming for a long time and I've been heavily involved with various communities over the years. I have been a fan of Bungie for as long as I can remember. I ran a community called Arm The Flag during the Halo days and we got our Machinima work on the front page all the time. I was even interviewed by the community director, Urk at the time. I've seen issues left and right within games, their creators, and the communities around them and I know there is a mature/respectful way to handle them. I am late to the Destiny game as I just recently finally purchased an Xbox One and I was eager to jump into the Destiny community because I remember all of the fun I had back in the Halo days....well that feeling was soon squashed for me. Upon checking out the Bungie Forums and jumping on r/DestinyTheGame on Reddit for the first time a few days ago I was met with all of of this hatred and resentment towards Bungie for just about every little aspect of the game. Where was this beloved community that I remembered from back in the day? It was nowhere to be seen. Now I've seen the posts and arguments...I realize that veteran players feel shafted for the Y1 stuff taken away then brought back...that's some BS. I see the arguments against the RAF program...which I think is an excellent program and the people complaining about it come off as nitpicking self entitled children, but that's just my opinion. Regardless of your opinion instead of dumping toxic waste posts everywhere in the community about how Destiny is shit and you hate Bungie, and you think it should be this way....maybe you should look at a more constructive way. Where is the mature community that enjoys the game? Where is the mature community that instead of whining like little girls they start a meaningful discussion and possibly come up with something to present Bungie that voices the thoughts of the community as a whole? Turning this sub and the Bungie forums into a cesspool of negativity, complaints, and a whine fest will not help your cause. I love you guys...and I've loved my time playing Destiny so far, but I hate reading through all these crap threads day after day.

  • I would run while you can. You may be a BUNGiE veteran, but these forums no longer belong to them; they belong to these salt stuffed wobbling turkey-people called the Destiny community. I'm only here because I'm starting to turn into one of them - I'd leave before you suffer the same fate.

  • Every gaming community has toxic people in it for one reason or another.

  • Entitlement. The people around here want everything given to them, everything don't use nerfed, everything they use buffed, and everything to change except what Bungie changes.

  • Want some good theories? That's where the better side of the community is. Mainly because it's the PvE side of things.

  • It's mostly this gamer generation. People feel entitled to everything and feel that unless you have the same stats or better that you're worthless. There's a huge divide between casuals and competitive players for no reason, and people constantly fight over it. There's a lot more but I don't want to make a wall of text.

  • It was better in the early days. Now people complain about EVERYTHING. It's really getting old. "Wah, HoS is OP." "Wah, raid drops suck." "Wah, Bungievision." "Wah, my class is better." "Wah, pulse rifles are OP." "Wah, when are new exotics coming?" "Wah, iron banner sucked." "Wah, Fallout is better than destiny." "Wah, im leaving destiny and i feel the need to tell everyone because my opinion is right and i want to force it on everyone else." "Wah, Destiny is dying." SHUT UP!!!!! I would stop coming to the forums every day if there wasn't the chance of people talking about a time gated exotic. The last thing I want is to stop coming here and then bungie releases a time gated exotic that I don't know about.

    • The awesome community is here but we've had to retreat from the forums due to all the toxicity, you might see something cool here and there but it's quickly drowned and buried by all the ignorance and stupidity. Sorry you joined at such a time, it wasn't always this bad. Lately seems like it's nothing but nerf this or that or it's just some nonsense that has nothing to do with destiny. Don't worry though, at some point the children will move on to something else, their attention spans aren't all that long. If you would like some adult friends to play with add me on Xbox one GT same as here. I'm also a member of a great clan Earth Allegiance corp, all positive people that love the game. Good luck guardian and don't let the trolls get ya down!

sad fact. Ask an opinion, someone just wants to say to suck it for a chuckle. There are garbage people of all ages and makes here, in a place where even a negative opinion is allowed to exist. but you can't trust people who have anonymity in a place where they know their opinion can garner attention Best advice I can give you. Go on a mute spree. I do every once in a while, really cleans up the trolls. You should have seen the community when the Gally was on sale. HOLY SHEEET! people we're verbally attacking eachother over an in-game item. Bungie actually started it's own mute spree on particularly toxic individuals. For very good reason It really speaks wonders when the forum moderators (Who will let you say THE worst sh!t about them/this game/ bungie) often do so little to stop us from sharing posts but noticed how the mass of idiots acted over xur selling a SOON T BE NERFED LAUNCHER! People even made posts complaining about the censorship!

      • I think the toxic element is symptomatic of the loot system. Destiny is a fantastically rewarding game mechanically. It is intuitive and has excellent physics but still enough depth for you to develop your skills. This is why I play. But they added a loot system that is not always consistent. The loot is supposed to be the cherry on top to add to the fun. What this did instead was make the more absent minded, addiction prone and entitled forget how fun the game is and focus on just one thing: the loot. When you get people approaching the game in this way, the only thing they measure their enjoyment by is the reward at the end of the session. Add to this the fact that they can't stop playing because they are addicted to the reward system, which means they burn out from overplaying the content. Queue: masses of poison and vitriol. It's a shame :( For the record, I have been enjoying this game since last Christmas and have found some great people through lfg and my clan. It's not all bad :)

People should realize that people critic the game because they love the game and want it to be better. Different people with different opinion on how to make the game better is not a bad thing at all. This forum and community is alive with people on all sorts of sides and that's what forum should be like instead of all being on 1 side. Also if you were here since day 1 you would know exactly why people call out bungie all sorts of stuff because some of it is 100% deserved.

        • Give people internet anonymity and the trolls come out to play everywhere :-) Part of the problem is letting kids participate. For me I think there should be some acid test that proves you are 25+ (most people show signs of adulthood from about that point on ;-) and just not allow access to anyone younger. At least then, if there were criticisms to be made you'd hope they'd be put forward in an adult and well argued fashion rather than a lot of feet stomping and throwing ALL the toys from the pram. This site could sure use some kind of stronger moderation. Once in a blue moon I hit a "this thread is awaiting Ninja justice" but it does not happen often enough! No doubt the counter argument is all about "freedom of speech" or something like that? I'm all for freedom of speech and the right of people to give and share their own heartfelt views on some topic. But it does not have to be done in an offensive or malevolent way. An ad hominem attack is not "freedom of speech". It's two kids fighting in the playground! (see my "+25 rule" above ;-)

          • To be honest, this is one of the best gaming communities out there. One of the worst when it comes to people who quit playing the game (or still play but are bitter) still coming to the forums. Sadly I feel like this is not representative of the community. Weird to say this, but Reddit is more mellow than the forums. /r/destinythegame and /r/cricibleplaybook are actually quite mellow. A lot of the podcasts out there are representative of the community, Guardian Radio, Crucible Radio, PlanetDestiny, Destiny Reset, Destiny The Show, Aim Assist Gaming, etc. The streamers, Gothalian, Broman, Kraftyy, Ms5000Watts, Datto, Poshy, KJHovey, and so many more can get salty about the game. But for the most part are very humble and appreciative. I feel comfortable saying these mediums are much more representative of the community. Most of us Destiny players know there's hiccups in this game. Content lull needs to be resolved. Communication needs to happen a bit differently. When you're clocked over 250 hours and then rail on forums when you quit because a new game came out, you need to get a life. Honestly OP, don't let b.net think poorly of this community.

            • While i agree with your point, maybe if you played this game from the begining and felt the changes and the lies and problems you might feel the same. I have played destiny since day one. Beta player and while the game is better now than it was at the start its still not amazing. I really feel that you coming here and giving your oppinion is invaled as you was not here from the start.

              • That's the way people work sadly. The people with negative comments are almost always the most vocal and the people really enjoying the game often have better things to do than troll the forums (like play the game for example). I'll never understand the people that say they are quitting but feel the need to post it all over the forums for the same game. Either way, the people u play with and find through recruitment tools like the recruitment section and other sites will typically be better than the toxic people on the general forums trolling for attention or complaining about everything under the sun. Some elements of the game design, I may disagree with but overall, it's a fantastic game and I've put a lot of time into it. Bungie has made a lot of changes throughout its life and most were for the better. There can be a lot of things in the game that aren't necessarily apparent to a newer player and some people are asses to anyone that doesn't read every update and is fully familiar with everything. There are also a couple things that have come up a lot in the past that people will jump all over u for if u post on here. One example is the legacy engrams xur sells. There is one every week and it will always be a year 1, 170 light item. Too many posts were made about this and it made some people pretty nuts. Google is your friend. Try looking something up before posting blindly to the forums. Or feel free to message myself or a friend with more knowledge of the game first. I would recommend keeping up to date on the weekly updates though. Good luck and welcome to the game.

              • Destiny forums. Please don't look as the community a whole as a toxic -blam!- fest. Reddit surprisingly is a lot better than this, not only that but, a few months before I bought destiny, I bought my ps4. Almost all of my friends I have here (300+) are all met from destiny. Only a fraction of that are my real friends and people I know. Anyways, out of all of them, only a small handful of those people are "toxic", it's weird how i don't meet these people in game, but you come across them all the times on the forums specifically.

It's easier to be negative than it is to be nice. Most people who post feel the need to troll. It's just the way it goes. The community is full of good people, it just takes 1 troll to keep 100 away. My advice is to join a destiny chat community or a clan. Thats where the good guys go. Screw this forum.

              • This community is more toxic than a garbage dump full of radiation! People are assholes here and jackasses over there. There are some nice people but DO NOT let that lower your guard or change the view of how this community is. I've been in plenty of communities and I've never seen a community so hostile towards people who's even keeping the community alive.
