Why is the Destiny community so toxic? A question from a new player.

I would like to preface this with the fact that I've been gaming for a long time and I've been heavily involved with various communities over the years. I have been a fan of Bungie for as long as I can remember. I ran a community called Arm The Flag during the Halo days and we got our Machinima work on the front page all the time. I was even interviewed by the community director, Urk at the time. I've seen issues left and right within games, their creators, and the communities around them and I know there is a mature/respectful way to handle them. I am late to the Destiny game as I just recently finally purchased an Xbox One and I was eager to jump into the Destiny community because I remember all of the fun I had back in the Halo days....well that feeling was soon squashed for me. Upon checking out the Bungie Forums and jumping on r/DestinyTheGame on Reddit for the first time a few days ago I was met with all of of this hatred and resentment towards Bungie for just about every little aspect of the game. Where was this beloved community that I remembered from back in the day? It was nowhere to be seen. Now I've seen the posts and arguments...I realize that veteran players feel shafted for the Y1 stuff taken away then brought back...that's some BS. I see the arguments against the RAF program...which I think is an excellent program and the people complaining about it come off as nitpicking self entitled children, but that's just my opinion. Regardless of your opinion instead of dumping toxic waste posts everywhere in the community about how Destiny is shit and you hate Bungie, and you think it should be this way....maybe you should look at a more constructive way. Where is the mature community that enjoys the game? Where is the mature community that instead of whining like little girls they start a meaningful discussion and possibly come up with something to present Bungie that voices the thoughts of the community as a whole? Turning this sub and the Bungie forums into a cesspool of negativity, complaints, and a whine fest will not help your cause. I love you guys...and I've loved my time playing Destiny so far, but I hate reading through all these crap threads day after day.

  • Here's one for ya: They removed the Nightfall modifier from the Nightfall. lol wut Oh wait, remember all that other cool shit you got from completing the Nightfall? Yea, that's all gone too. But, they're fixing it. Wait, what? It was broken? Jus sayin... one of the many changes no one asked for or even mentioned. Not even going to go into that mess we call a community. Who remembers Bossman? smfh

    • Don't be fooled; it's a petty good community. It's the forums that are toxic. In the forums, it's a minoruty of the community making a majority of the noise.

    • Most of the forums is people wanting change in the game that benefits the players. They just do it in a toxic, entitled way.

    • There's just that handful if bad apples that are ruining our image. Seriously one time I asked how to get the exotic hunter exclusive from banshee & some responded "just google it & go back yo kindergarten to learn how to spell" All he could've said was do the Stillpiercer quest first >.> but like 10other people replied that were actually helpful

    • A loud voice from an entitled minority. The good ones are out there; have to wade through some mud to find them though. For every 5 guardians out there, at least 3 are good people, but the other 2 shout loud enough to silence the 3 good ones.

    • The mature ones are quiet now as we let the toxicity you see take over. We grow tired of the never ending war on tears and muting everyone. It's hard to make a post without getting shit on for very small reasons. People are keyboard Warriors now and I don't think it's just here. It's everywhere on the Internet now.

      • I don't usually post that much on the forums, and as for the whining that goes on, all I can really agree with is the complaining about the year one screw over being a day one player myself, and the massive amount of money that had to be put into this game by year onerz where as people who just recently got the game only have to pop off 60 bucks... That's the real bullshit.

      • Most nice destiny players stay off the forums because of all the toxicity, the forums are mainly just the whining, ass end of a great community.

      • It's not the whole community that is being super toxic. The problem is that most of the asshats are coming to the forums to spread their hate.

        • I have loved Bungie games during Halo:CE to Reach. After playing CE, I was hooked and supported Bungie by buying each new Halo on Day 1. Bungie made excellent games up to that point, and built a reputation on being fan-responsive and approachable on top of being great game makers. Somewhere along the line, Bungie lost themselves. They are not the same Halo team. They still make a great shooting and great physical experience, but they made an overall disappointment of a game in Destiny. When people are disappointed or let down, they act out in different ways: Anger/Rage Indifferent Supportive The ones who were supportive of Bungie tried to offer suggestions on what they didn't like and how to change the problems. Bungie has listened in some aspects, but mostly has ignored the sincerely helpful ones. A lot of these people have moved to other games. I'm not pointing fingers, I'm just stating what is happening. The indifferent didn't care obviously, and played, then left to play better games. The angry players whine and complain, and those are the ones we see the most here. I'm tired of phone texting, so I'll stop here. I welcome any good conversation here, but knowing this community, butt hurt is lurking somewhere.

        • Unfortunately Bungie did a lot of stupid things that they then sold for more than it's worth. Just one example, the recent weapon parts drough. Weapon parts weren't a problem in vanilla, Weren't in Dark Below Slightly became one in HoW but if you didn't reroll every Gun like crazy it still worked, With TTK they brought infundatio wich increased the amount you needed in first place, then they nerfed the drop rate for no reason, then they came around saying "yey we fixed your weapon parts problem" and charged us glimmer for. They made a problem themselves waited for the people to realize and to complain, came back like the white knight fixing the problem and making it worse than it ever was. The PR on this one was a failure like a lot before and the whole thing is just stupid. I'm not saying the price is too high but if they adjusted the parts you needed for infundation and didn't lower the drop rate we never would have this problem. Besides that wasn't it the goal to expanding the range for competitive guns with the last updates? Yeah I would love to test all the new weapons but unfortunately don't have the parts at the moment. This is a Mat that should flow naturally no grind just for that. I love the Game and like it that Bungie is working so much on it, but some decisions were made poorly and were sold to us even worse.

        • It's not everyone, just the more vocal ones who come across as entitled are spewing their hate more than ever at the moment. Some have even moved on to other games yet still comment on this game. They confuse constructive criticism with whining and nerf threads.

        • wow, whining about complaining lol. You are the forums worst enemy. Bungie have said, as well as Deej on many occasions that they don;t need white knighted. Also, a toxic community is a sign that he game is dying. Have a look on any lfg board in order to do a raid. you will probably be looking to do VoG which will be hard enough without spending a few days looking to play with 5 other players. Over the past year this community has put up with a pile of shit from Bungie, oh and this is not the same Bungie that made Halo. Constant nerfs cut content to be sold in DLC, microtrans and DLC, lack of content in the game for the premuim price, nerf gate on a monthly basis. Have fun playing dude. You are the ever decreasing player base

frustration on how the game turned out on launch , bungies approach to the players on bullying em to play the game only one way , creativity gets patched or nerfed, and after all the "expansions" which limit the game more than adding stuff and take your earned stuff away every few months . also look at this video to get a better idea why people are frustrated.

        • Before i say this i will say i don't like salty players. In fact i view all games as entertainment if someone's not having fun they should take a hike and do something else think the issue really is what destiny used to be and what it is now. The whole game is so unbalanced and when they try to balance it they must be taking some funny meds because it comes out more unbalanced every time. In regards to RAF and similar programs like silver currency ii can understand why people act badly to it. For year 1 players it goes like this. Destiny > TDB > HOW > Destiny > TDB > HOW > TTK > Silver for money > RaF by making them spend money otherwise you wont get cool shit. Im from the UK and paid £40 for TTK digital version the one that was supposed to make everyone happy. To give you an idea i can buy the disc legendary version with TTK for £45. Just saying it does seem they're becoming money grabbers. Any how if you want to join any great communities there's some great clans out there

        • I would run while you can. You may be a BUNGiE veteran, but these forums no longer belong to them; they belong to these salt stuffed wobbling turkey-people called the Destiny community. I'm only here because I'm starting to turn into one of them - I'd leave before you suffer the same fate.
