Why is the Destiny community so toxic? A question from a new player.
I would like to preface this with the fact that I've been gaming for a long time and I've been heavily involved with various communities over the years. I have been a fan of Bungie for as long as I can remember. I ran a community called Arm The Flag during the Halo days and we got our Machinima work on the front page all the time. I was even interviewed by the community director, Urk at the time. I've seen issues left and right within games, their creators, and the communities around them and I know there is a mature/respectful way to handle them.
I am late to the Destiny game as I just recently finally purchased an Xbox One and I was eager to jump into the Destiny community because I remember all of the fun I had back in the Halo days....well that feeling was soon squashed for me. Upon checking out the Bungie Forums and jumping on r/DestinyTheGame on Reddit for the first time a few days ago I was met with all of of this hatred and resentment towards Bungie for just about every little aspect of the game. Where was this beloved community that I remembered from back in the day? It was nowhere to be seen.
Now I've seen the posts and arguments...I realize that veteran players feel shafted for the Y1 stuff taken away then brought back...that's some BS. I see the arguments against the RAF program...which I think is an excellent program and the people complaining about it come off as nitpicking self entitled children, but that's just my opinion. Regardless of your opinion instead of dumping toxic waste posts everywhere in the community about how Destiny is shit and you hate Bungie, and you think it should be this way....maybe you should look at a more constructive way.
Where is the mature community that enjoys the game? Where is the mature community that instead of whining like little girls they start a meaningful discussion and possibly come up with something to present Bungie that voices the thoughts of the community as a whole? Turning this sub and the Bungie forums into a cesspool of negativity, complaints, and a whine fest will not help your cause.
I love you guys...and I've loved my time playing Destiny so far, but I hate reading through all these crap threads day after day.

The only part of the forums you should enter are the recruitment sections, in order to find people to game with. The rest of this godforsaken wasteland should be avoided at all costs.

Get rid of the ability to use the forums via smartphones. Guarantee global idiocy and toxicity decreases by 90%.

What you see on the forums is a vocal minority. Very vocal. Most people I find in the actual game a pretty chill. Met some very cool people in this game.

1 ReplyI'm convinced most of these type of post come from the new entitled generation. It can't be easy to make a game for people that want everything handed to them. That said.. most of the happy people are actually playing the game and not here complaining..

It's been this way since the game launched. There's way too much hate here and I really can't figure out why. I go on the World Of Tanks and Fallout 4 forums and it's nothing like this. I'm not an admin but try to police this place, it doesn't work. I'm on here all the time and continue to learn new things, but the posts where people act civil are few and far between. I'm convinced if we keep calling out bad behavior it'll make a difference down the road. We'll see. Don't let this place scare you off.

The mature community died as soon as Activision pushed for that teen rating and at the same time kicked Staten out of Bungie. The rest of the mature community left as soon as they saw how disappointing this game is. How it has under-delivered so much and how it has desecrated Bungie's once respectable reputation. A good game = a good community. Bungie deserve every pound of hate mail they get. And dont even compare Halo to this abomination of a game. It had been cut up and re-arranged so many times, it would be an understatement to call this monster the Frankenstein of the gaming industry. A toxic game for a toxic community.

Its because of the Activision badge on this game. It brought over the worst parts of the Call of Duty player base and now the toxic community has been corrupted

4 RepliesThe more hate, maybe the more bungie will get their act together. They have cheated the community multiple times, and the pple are voicing their thoughts and that's completely ok. There's no reason to protect a company that generates millions, while us players gets f on cos they feel like it. You're a noob and haven't seen half of what's been happening! So pls stfu and let pple express their opinions.

Blame the mods. Some of the stuff I have seen on here is beyond a joke and even when reported it still sits there. I get that it is hard to police a site with this many users but come on... some of the stuff you see is as toxic as it gets.

There's a lot of good here as well. Just don't feed the trolls & mute the obvious idiots & jerks, and it's not that bad. Also, it seems like there are quite a lot of people who come here only to try and argue with anyone about everything. Just ignore / mute people who are unreasonably confrontational. You don't have to respond to every reply you get.....they will go find someone else to harrass.

The game is fun. These forums are only fun if your a troll. Once In a while there is some good info, just not often.
