Fascism, a term commonly associated with totalitarian dictatorial figures, but quite often many people use the word without fully knowing the words exact meaning. Fascism is an extreme authoritarian and nationalistic right wing system of government and social organization. Examples of fascist regimes are Mussolini, Hitler and Franco.
So what does Donald Trump have to do with any of this? What I am talking about is how dangerously Trump has so far exhibited the primary characteristics of fascism and how his possible rise to power is almost mirroring the rise to power of the regimes I just mentioned, recently he suggested that all Muslims should be registered, Hitler did the exact same thing to Jews, am I saying Trump will be like Hitler if he's elected? No, I cannot say for sure. But let's have a look at the 14 characteristics of fascism and I will say how Trump exhibits them in bold.
Source: http://www.rense.com/general37/char.htm
Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
Check. Most if not all of Trumps supporters and at his rallies display much of this.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
Check. Trump knows very well that many of his supporters displays aggressive and disgusting behavior towards many peaceful protesters such as Black Lives Matter and Latinos and he had dismissed it as his supporters being 'passionate' and has shown he approves of such behavior, at a recent rally he even encouraged people who were assaulting a Black Lives Matter protester saying 'get em outta here' on the microphone with some supporters chanting 'All lives matter', seems 'all' means all except Blacks to them.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
Check. Islamophobia and prejudice against Black and Latinos run strong with himself and his base, and so is the stigma towards communism and socialism.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
The U.S. already does spend a disproportionate amount of its budget on its military, and Trump has suggested he would intensify the use of force against ISIS, so I say Check.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
Check. Trump has made very sexist comments towards women and is against abortion and gay marriage.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
Check. The media does give Trump a lot of attention and coverage, while he doesn't control them directly, U.S. Mainstream media is known for its bias and misinformation. *cough Fox*
Edit: According to Gravy Train, he is apparently trying to restrict media coverage to avoid the blatant racism and bigotry in the crowds.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
Check. Fear and hatred is definitely incited.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
Check. Trump is Christian (stated his own book is his second favorite book and his favorite is the bible) and in addition to being against abortion and gay marriage, much of his and his supporter base words and actions go against the commandments and tenets.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
Check Trump is a powerful and wealthy businessman and mogul, and corporate power and lobbying is strong in the U.S.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
Yep, he has mistreated unions and workers.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
Check. He talks a lot smack despite clear evidence, Obamas birth certificate anyone?
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
The U.S. does have the highest incarcerations per capita and has suggested extreme measures like registering Muslims etc. So check.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
Well, I actually can't say for sure about this one, but it wouldn't surprise me.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
Check. Trump does smear and talk smack about other candidates and the more votes are suppressed the Republicans usually benefit.
So there you have it.
My analysis of Trump and fascism, if I got anything wrong or have anything to say by all means your welcome to comment as long its in a civil and genuine manner.

1 ReplyEdited by LiamCDM: 11/26/2015 6:38:14 PMPretty much every GOP 2016 presidential hopeful is a fascist.

7 RepliesWe should just have someone hack his bank account and distribute almost all of it to random people around the world... Not only would he be forced to quite his campaign but he's never be able to do anything worthwhile or not again! Re-routing money from his companies would probably be required as well so he can't build money back up...

Britton described him as a demagogue, that fits him pretty well too.

Did you just copy paste a shitty chain email? Britt isn't a doctor and those examples are real stretches for every point. Not to mention this matches any president and presidential candidate

I think fascism is the perfect way to describe Trump. Many say rascist which is close but fascism describes him to a tee. Childish is a another word

4 RepliesI could apply all of these things to absolutely anybody. You took points and stretched them out to relate to totally irrelevant details, especially because they are consistent of any presidential candidate you want to pick. You said that he meets a fascist point because the media covers him? They entirely have that choice, but free choice is something you most likely don't understand.

5 RepliesEdited by ShapelessHorr0r: 11/26/2015 5:23:48 AMOh good grief. Most politicians display most of those characteristics. Edit: So I posted this at 3. Continued reading. I stand by my statement. Not to mention this whole thing is biased beyond belief. Yeah, Trump has the tact of a mosquito, but I often find myself agreeing with certain points. Like, for example, the fact that illegal immigration is harming our nation. As for the wall and deportation...well...can't defend him there :D

Show of patriotism has always been a tradition in the US. It stems from our having achieved independence from a powerful empire and from our nation's contributions to the world. Americans have a right to be proud of their nation's past achievements.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need."
There has been a strong stigma against Socialism and Communism since before WWII. This is nothing new. Trump is a product of decades of demonizing both of these political and economic philosophies. It also does not help that both ideologies would directly affect him in a negative sense if implemented in their pure form.
Again, nothing new. When a threat arises, our military grows and defense spending goes up. Happened in the War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI and WWII.
Other than his comments, in order to really give this argument some bite, I feel it would be necessary to look at the proportion of women in leadership roles in Trump's businesses and his business policies regarding women's issues. You know the old saying, "actions speak louder than words"...even Trump's.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. Check. Of course news outlets are going to feature him because he draws people in. Even people who hate Trump will tune in to hear what he says just so they will have another reason to hate him. That is more the fault of the media than Trump's.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. Check. Fear and hatred is definitely incited.
Agreed.
Trump is not the only person guilty of this. JEB Bush, Cruz, Carson and Kasich all want to insert religion in some way. However one could argue that this has more to do with ISIS and their call for Jihad and this is a play to the overly zealous nut jobs who want to respond with a new crusade.
To keep it short: nb4 Trump.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. Yep, he has mistreated unions and workers.
Mistreatment and suppression are two different things.
He questioned Obama's birth and the certificate. This does not denote a resentment to higher education or academia.
So check.
That is the US. What does trump have to do with that? Get tough policies have been the norm since the 1990's and a favorite of politicians running for executive branches.
It would not surprise me either, but not sure what this has to do with Trump. Also, presidents who are elected have appointed friends to Cabinate positions for years. Nothing new.
Check. Even our founders were not immune to it.
So there you have it. My analysis of Trump and fascism, if I got anything wrong or have anything to say by all means your welcome to comment as long its in a civil and genuine manner.
While I see where you are coming from, I feel that some of these positions are incomplete. Let me make clear, I do not like Trump. I feel like the only good thing he will do for the country is make C-SPAN entertaining. I like the idea you had though.
