Ever really thought about this...
I mean... Like where does he get more needles from. Do they like grow inside the gun or something....
Posted by: RustedEdge
Posted by: Throne Well since the needles explode on impact and dissipate after a while, I assume that it has an energy core inside of it. Using an unnamed device, it solidifies that energy into rounds that you see on the top. When enough of those rounds collide, it sets off the energy and it all dissipates at once in an explosion. So when it reloads, it's probably producing more rounds from the energy core. This is just speculation. If you check out the Halo wikipedia, you'll most likely find your answer. After all, they explain how the spiker works.
You sir, just made my day.
Whoa. Best Thread Ever. *Saves*

The needler was the second weapon I used in Halo 3, and I wondered that ever since.

There are some things that aren't meant to be answered
-
I've always wondered how he reloads dual weapons at the same time....
-
It's a mystery to this day. In Halo: CE you see Needler ammo. That doesn't help to explain it at all since it just looked like a blob of pink.
-
It's a magazine inside the gun, right?
Posted by: str8_A_stud3nt If they explode in large numbers then why dont they explode in the gun. There are way more needles exposed in the gun than you need to have in a person to explode. Just wondering what exactly causes the detonation because I dont think it is proximity.
They're probably still exposed to small amounts of energy in the Needler to prevent such an occurrence.
-
Posted by: Erikster Actually, it's quite simple. The Needler is the testament of matter to energy conversion. Like it was noted above, they have energy cores inside each needle, which are intelligent. However, how do they load? Inside the Needler, energy floats around on a limited plane, contained by a pink plasma substance. When you hit reload, the energy is pressed through a solution, and when those layers hit the air, they react with the Oxygen to form the solid needles. The previous generation (Halo 2 era) Needlers were smaller and didn't require Oxygen, but they were weaker and required more needles for a super-detonation. This was all BS btw.
That was what I was thinking! :-/

I've been wondering that for quite some time. I've seen crystals laying around one of the levels in Halo Combat Evolved. [Edited on 09.06.2009 6:21 PM PDT]

According to the Halo wikipedia, the Type-33 Guided Munitions launcher uses an energy coil like all other known Covenant weaponry and "should the coil fail the weapon is rendered useless". It doesn't offer much of any other information as to the nature of the ammunition. This makes the ammunition and the reload most likely one of these two: Energy: The ammunition shown in an earlier game could possibly be energy cores that power the energy coil which in turn creates solidified plasma energy. The player most likely only charges the energy coil with the energy core until it's full and discards the crystal itself. We rarely see the ammunition for Covenant weapons since the player doesn't know how to reload most of them except for the Spiker, Needler, and Carbine. Since Plasma is seen as a controllable substance(Shields, energy sword, etc) in the Halo universe(As it is theorized in our universe by means of electromagnetic fields), it's possible that it could be temporarily solidified for a period of time until the round leaves the weapon and the electromagnetic field dissipates.(Yes, I know I'm bringing physics into a video game argument.) This might also explain how the rounds home in on living targets since all living organisms produce a faint magnetic field of energy and as we all know, magnets are very friendly. for the reason of the shaking reload, the wielder probably holds down a button to activate the energy and pulls the weapon down and forward to cause the energy to elongate in the opposite direction, making needles that face up and back. The main problem with this idea if UNSC remarks are cannon, is that Needler rounds can remain solid for at least 2 hours, far longer than in the game. Crystals: While I don't see how the shown ammunition could fit into the weapon, all things are possible in video games. If the ammunition is a crystalline substance, it could be a substance that is converted into a liquid form when exposed to a specific type of energy. This could explain how the object can fit into the weapon. After being exposed to the energy, the crystalline form becomes explosive in large quantities after being formed into needles by the weapon and shot into the target. As for the reload, it could be a similar reason as the energy idea. If someone posted a better idea than this while I was typing this up, or if someone finds a flaw in either of my theories, feel free to comment on it. :)

ask a grunt

its like playdough he puts in a pink brick and pushes up on the bottom of the needler and that squeezes the pink stuff through the holes and it hardens wen exposed to the air.

never mind [Edited on 09.06.2009 5:13 PM PDT]
Posted by: Screecherz
Posted by: Bonehead5000 But when the gun is empty, there is nothing in the holes......
Exactly! That means the energy storage chamber would be full of the very oxygen that reacts with the energy to transform it into solid matter. Unless the holes could somehow close and the gun had a mechanism to create a vacuum, the weapon would never work.
ahh okay i think i got ya now.

I think he has packets of needles like the ones you see on the ground on the level 343 guilty spark on halo1 and I guess he pushes a button and it reloads it or something
-
i KNOW HOW. They got these like oval pink gems inside the needler, and when he shakes it back, it apparently shapes the pink things into needles. I remember seeing those oval pink gems in halo ce.
Posted by: Screecherz
Posted by: Bonehead5000 It only makes sense cuz we couldn't prove him wrong....
Actually... The needler is not capable of making a vacuum because the holes on the top of the needler do not have any mechanism to constrict. Without the holes being able to close in some fashion the energy inside of the needler would slowly turn into solid matter. When that happens, the entire center part of the needler would lock up, rendering the gun utterly useless.
But when the gun is empty, there is nothing in the holes......

* Instead of each needle on top of the gun pushing into the gun separately as you fire, like you may think, like a visible magazine, they all push in slightly for each shot fired
