Just like a Defender, a warlock does not need an exotic to be good. Yes, exotics do add a element of zaniness into your gameplay; but, the warlock subclasses are near perfectly balanced. They may not have the highest damage output of all three classes, unlike us titans and hunters, warlocks sport the widest amount of super variations. For example, Voidwalkers can create the largest area denial through vortexes and/or shatter nova bombs, Sunsingers can revive to get the drop on a enemy that thinks they're dead or run radiant skin to out tank enemies, and Stormcallers maintain consistent area denial and/or turn the tables with a full heal and double trance duration when no abilities are on cool down. They may get the fewest exotics from the batch in December, but it doesn't change the fact that a couple of us that main other classes are envious of the Warlock's kits. As other classes are restricted to mandatory perks that limit build diversity, some even need an exotic to be relevant in all content. Note, I am jealous beyond imagination that Sunsinger mains are getting the veil back. The only exotic I've ever regretted waiting until a month before TTK to try...if I got it sooner, I never would have mained as a Defender just for the options it opens up for a team support.
