If you are running low, buy a few exotic swords from the blueprint kiosk and max them out with motes. Cost a little glimmer and 1 shard to buy and you will get 2 shards back most of the time from dismantling them. They max out really quick and there are fewer nodes to waste materials on compared to weapons.
I'm sure there are better ways but this could help u out for now.

That's just the problem though. If you don't have a shard to get you started, you're SOL.
