Chapter 4: Rescue Mission part one I woke up, feeling sore after the events of the previous day. I never would have imagined that I would be brought back to life, much less that I would see Ashley again! I remembered that we had made plans to find a third member of our Fireteam before going on patrol. “I wonder if anyone else I know is a guardian?” I thought about it, and decided my best bet was to ask the vanguard mentors. I looked in on Ashley after gently knocking and saw that she was still asleep. I decided not to wake her up. I went over to the vanguard mentors to check if any names I mentioned were familiar to them. “Pardon me for interrupting you all, but I have a question.” I said, waiting to see if it was okay before throwing questions at them. All three nodded their agreement. I got a sheet of paper with a list of names on it. All of the people were people I knew before my death that I would love having in my team. “So, I want to find some old friends of mine from when I was alive, and I was hoping that one of these people is a guardian now.” I said carefully, making sure to make my intentions clear, “I will list them off. Just stop me if one of the names catches your attention… Masato -------, Rene --------, Tom ------, Cody -----.” I stopped, since Cayde cleared his throat. “I recognize two of those names. Masato is a hunter, like you, and Rene is a warlock who specializes in golden age technology. The two are in a team together at the moment, but I recall them mentioning your name when they asked the same question. I introduced the two as friends of yours, so I assume that they will be happy to know you are a guardian now!” Cayde said with a playful smile. Ikora suddenly looked at me with a somber look. “I just heard from Rene… Masato died and his ghost was destroyed. A Fallen Walker got him with its main cannon. Rene is on his way back with Masato’s dead Ghost. I am sure you will want to mourn him, and you have every right to. Rene should be returning shortly.” I was in shock. I got good news, and then tragedy struck. That’s the story of my life before I was a guardian. I then turned back to Ikora, who tapped my shoulder. “Guardian,” she whispered, “Rene sent another transmission. He was being tailed by a rogue guardian and was shot down before he could get away from danger. I would send someone more experienced, but Ashley should be enough to keep you safe. She is one of the most skilled warlocks around, and a master of the storm. Rescue Rene, and deal with the rogue guardian.” “Will do.” I said. I immediately went to get Ashley, who was still asleep. I knocked louder this time, and I heard her getting up. She opened the door and her hair was a mess. “Oh… good morning…” she said to me as she walked back into her room. She got her armor on and took her helmet off for a moment to drink a cup of coffee that I poured for her. After waking up, she noticed my face was not the jovial and fun loving face it usually was. “Oh no… what happened? I take it you went to the vanguard and got some bad news.” “Yeah. We are going on a rescue mission. I am going to kill until my rage is gone after we are done.” I said, face filled with anger and pain. Ashley just leaned in and hugged me, and stroked the back of my head soothingly. After a minute of that, I pulled away and walked out. I boarded my ship, and Ashley was close behind. I flew to Rene’s last known coordinates over in the place that was known as Florida when I had been alive. It was a silent flight. Neither of us spoke at all during the flight, and Ashley didn’t really have anything to say that would comfort me.
