Multiply that by ~$100 per person and you have a multi billion-dollar enterprise.
Eververse is also rolling in the dough for them.
I don't understand why people think Destiny is "dying". It was "dying" at launch, it was "dying" in TDB, it was "dying" in HoW, at least a dozen other big-name games have "killed" Destiny now.
Yet here we are, after TTK (an expansion that got rave reviews by players and critics alike), and Destiny isn't dead. It's quite the opposite. Sure, we ran out of stuff to do (like we always do when we play till our thumbs fall off). And sure, there's a lot wrong with the game and a lot to fix. But none of this is new at all, with any video game. Bungie and Activision are swimming in a pool of gold like Scrooge McDuck right now.
90% of the people that "quit" will be back with their next big expansion, plus during the Holidays droves of new players will come in like they always do.
I understand that TTK is getting towards the end of its rope (it is for me too) but 90% of us will be back when the next DLC (or really any new content) comes out.
I will be buying Fallout 4 and playing the hell out of that. But I will keep an eye on what's going on with Destiny and be ready for the next new thing. And so will most of you.

Recent Bungie games have a very nice amount of longevity. Halo 3, one year after release, had over 1 million players. Halo Reach, one year after release, had over 900k players. Destiny had over 800k players attempt Trials of Osiris a couple weeks ago. Sure, it's a limited event and its first run of the new Expansion, but the numbers are there. Besides, I'd attribute the diminishing numbers to a larger variety of really damn good, top-tier games.

5 RepliesEdited by JasperGTR: 11/11/2015 4:44:19 PMA single person can register as multiple users (create additional accounts), and not even own the game. One registered user is my wife, who never plays the game. So now we're down to 24,999,999 other users. Another is my daughter who played for 2 weeks back in October, got to 40, beat Atheon and Crota, and hasn't played since... 24,999,998. Bungie and Activision are masters at not releasing actual sales figures, but inflated numbers that look good on paper for investors and future customers (and to make existing players feel better). They use numbers like "# of Guardians" potentially multiple players, each with 3 Guardians could play on a single purchased game. But if there are 4 people that share a purchased game, that is 12 Guardians - but a single purchase. They haven't released actual numbers yet, and probably never will, because bigger numbers generate more buzz.

Lol and they needed microtransactions to fund the live team.

Edited by Aegis Mind: 11/11/2015 5:43:43 AMBungies air conditioning bill also costs more than any amount of money they made in a single year during the 90's, per month.

Then where are they in court of oryx, that place got tumbleweeds and bats everywhere.

1 ReplyEdited by Dooodley: 11/11/2015 7:23:06 PMA reasonable guess would be between 7 and 10 million copies, based on confirmed numbers. The math in the article doesnt even add up or it's simply so poorly written that people misinterpret it. The OP seems to think that the game pulled in $500 from just pre-orders and day one sales, which would be the equivalent of roughly 65 million copies, based on the following numbers the article states, 6.3 over a month and roughly $50M revenue. I recall Bungie posting something about +9M PSN/GTs at one point but that was a long time ago so I would expect that - total number - to be a bit higher by now. However, that number includes everyone, from the person who plays 8 hours per day to a person who just accidently booted up the wrong game and never played it again. The best numbers we can get atm are probably those from the TTK achivements.

...and only 2,000 are still playing

Registered users is not the same as number of people who purchased it. For example, in my house, I have this game on both Xbox One & PS4, and there are 4 of us with accounts, on each system. There is 2 copies sold, but 8 registered users.

That includes anyone who downloaded the demo also.

5 RepliesHonestly I'm done with destiny after this holiday season when the next dlc comes out. I will not be buying the next dlc as I see destiny as an utter piece of garbage :) It is the worst game I have ever spent money on (besides call of duty of course) and will not be joining the rest of the guardians in year 3. My regards destiny

4 Replies25 million registered accounts and 25 million sold copies are two separate things... 25 million registered users, out of 25 million id say around 15 million people bought it, probably less. Out of those 25 million registered users id say only about 1-2 million of them are probably still playing this game. Registered users is not the same as bought copies, just means they might have either borrowed it or rented the game. Dont get it twisted kid
-
25 mil purchased, maybe 700k still play.

While I agree with what you're saying, I think it should be pointed out that most of us had a whole lot more to do before TTK launched than after. I think it might very well be the first expansion in gaming history that ever gave you 20% more game but took away about 75% of the game. There's exactly 2 places I can go right now where I MIGHT progress my character, anything other than that is pretty much just me killing time.

Edited by OkarNando101: 11/11/2015 6:02:03 AMIve been on destiny for a while but I dunno man.. Only thing that will bring me back at this point is if my buddies are playing it and they want to run something however the odds are slim for that happening with bo3 out and fallout 4. Two very heavy hitters. I haven't played a cod game since mw2 and I am actually enjoying bo3 and fallout is going to have tons of replayability with all the customization with armor, weapons, power armors and you can build a settlement I came to forums to see if Bungie added anything or did anything to try combat it, but I guess they're banking on your thought and hoping ppl will just come back when they release something.. Terrible mindset for gamers though. Bungie will just make sub-par content and bank on the hype.. Good for Bungie but bad for us.

Edited by Deadly: 11/11/2015 4:37:13 PMYou clearly don't understand math, and neither do I :D

25 million people buying Destiny would equal 1.5 billion. According to your article pre order and day one sales were a fraction of that. You keep seeming to think 25 million players equals units sold. It isn't, not even close, to that number.
-
2 RepliesAccurate post. Bungie and Activision aren't worried at all with those numbers. As for me, I'm just a small data point, and I will continue to be so in destiny year 3 and 4...

I didn't.

Just saying destiny hasn't been this vacant EVER till now so there's a good chance it's on it's way to dying which i hope not. There has to be some dlc coming really soon or it will not look good for bungie.
