Of the 40% of Americans who own a video game console, 42% are women and only 37% are men.

By "game console," the survey refers to systems like Xbox or PlayStation and omits handheld devices. Given how female gamers have been pushed aside in the past due to their penchant for casual mobile games (rather than so-called "real" games that use a console as their platform), this distinction is key.
So GTFO with your "girls don't play video games" and "GIRL = guy in real life" bullshit.
EDIT: Yes, I know 42% + 37% doesn't add up to 100%. That's because despite the poor wording, it means that 42% of women and 37% of men own consoles, not 42% of console owners are male and 37% are female.
EDIT: The fact that all of you teenage boys rarely see girls on Destiny or Halo doesn't mean we're not gaming. FPSes generally aren't as popular in the female crowd, so the rarity of women on Destiny and Halo and CoD isn't representative of the gaming community as a whole. I have a lot of girlfriends who are hardcore gamers but most of them are into RPGs or other single-player games, not so much the FPS multiplayer stuff. Not to mention a lot of us avoid interaction in online play because men instantly either treat us like shit or turn into creepy pervs.
EDIT: For all of you claiming that there's far more male PC gamers so that means there are still far more male gamers in general; wrong again. Men and women are pretty much 50/50 for PC gaming, and women make up 40% of the MMO scene and over half of the PC RPG scene
