"DDoS" Attacks On Trials of Osiris

Hello, I keep seeing people complaining about being ddosed on trials so as someone experienced in that field, I just wanted to inform you all on what that is. A ddos (distributed denial of service) attack is when someone sends a massive amount of pings/packets to your ISP's server host of which you're connected to, to briefly disconnect you from the Internet. It can last for as long as the attacker wants it to. What you guys don't understand is, with the new consoles there's no way for an attacker to retrieve your IP (Internet Protocol) address. On 360/PS3 it's still very possible to use a program such as Cain and Abel to seek out IP's of people who's inside of the attacker's lobbies or party chats. But there's no way to get the IP of anyone on Xbox one or PS4. Unless they send you an IP Logger (A website that logs your IP on it when you go to it) link that you'd have to type in on your phone, desktop, or Xbox One just to get to, which no one would ever do due to security reasons. To wrap this up, it's impossible to be ddosed from Xbox live on Xbox one or PSN on PS4 because it's impossible to retrieve one's IP Address as of now. TL;DR There's no way to get someone's IP on Xbox one or ps4 so it's impossible for anyone to be ddosed. I hope I helped some of you! Just wanted to get everyone aware of such terms, so that people can stop using it so loosely. EDIT: All because you get disconnected from bungie, Doesn't mean you're being ddosed. Go to www.speedtest.net and tell me your Download speed, Upload speed, And your Ping. From there I can determine whether if your internet is TERRIBLE and that's the reason why you've been disconnecting (because you're on a closed nat type), Or if someone is attacking your internet protocol address. (IP Address)

This is absolutely incorrect OP - source: I build servers and networking technology for government. It is fairly simple to get the IP address of everyone in the lobby because of the way the MESH network Bungie uses works. You are connecting to each person and passing data back and forth as well as feeding data to Bungie. You can (a) easily locate the person on a map up to 1 mile radius from their actual location, (b) ping each player to get the actual ping based on their location to your location and (c) get their IP address which is what allows you to narrow down their location. If you don't believe me just check out the locations map on a Netduma router. If what I am saying is not possible the Netduma would not be able to locate all players in the lobby. EDIT: I thought I'd clarify this point prior to someone pointing this out.....they may not be able to get the actual address of just your PS4 because that is being managed by your router which operates through your public IP...what they DDoS is your entire home internet versus just one device.

    • I'm convinced that half of these neckbeards or squeakers heard DDoS from someone and thought, "yeah, that's what I'm going to blame on because I have a poor connection/I suck!" I've played A LOT of destiny and NEVER once have I ever experienced this. These kids have no idea how that works. They hear a work, and think they know what it means. Tl;dr: no.

    • Hello John Snow! What was that thing you are famous for again? Something about your knowledge. Yeah The consoles has nothing to do with how they get the ip and if the console masked it how would actual game servers see it? I noticed you also cite speedtest.net. yeah, no. 2 problems there. First the site will pick the closest possible test server so you will have a ping that is always less than you experience in real life gaming sessions. Secondly it tends to give you a higher speed than you actually have because it will give you the very peak speed whereas you will experience a much lower constant average. It also doeant acxount for dips in connection, which happen amd is often a determining factor on how often you drop connection to servers. In summary, you are talking out of your ass

      • I do agree that yelling DDOS DDOS is dumb, people have been screaming HAX after losing at games forever, shit ain't gonna change. But saying that a DDoS is impossible? Come on. In P2P online gaming, each game client has to send its own info (like player coordinates, player gun, player armor, hitscan lines, etc) to everyone else in the lobby. This can be contrasted to dedicated servers, where all player send client info to one single place that organizes everything and sends instance info and player coordinates back to the client. In p2p, each packet you send has to have an address in order for this shit to work. So in theory you could sniff out outgoing packets from your game console, keep stats on where they are going (aka IPs of players in the lobby) and then direct a DDoS attack to a designated player. BUT the chances of someone going through all this trouble to DDoS some shitter is very low, and buying a nirwens would be much easier for most people. Also there are probably a few security measures, like having 1 authoritative peer (aka the "Host", usually the one with the best internet) that packets get sent to. And having large enough infrastructure to stage a DDoS attack (distributed denial of service) usually requires a bunch of computers or a botnet of some sort ya know. tl;dr - bored computer engineer explaining how p2p gaming works

      • So in order to get ddosed you need to clink a link for someone to get access. You provide a link to test internet speed. Hmmmm.

      • Just to echo the others here, you've completely overlooked something, and it's something you, as the player, and Bungie, as the developer, have zero control over. Sadly, DDoS will be a thing in every client-to-client game until the penalties for using it become severe enough to remove the desire to do so, and the ability to catch people in the act improves. That's not going to happen anytime soon, because more often than not, the source of the DDoS is not the same as the person directing it. About the only real protection you have, (that doesn't dick with your ability to play a range of games,) is a really, really fast line.

      • You are dumb. Servers are listen servers hosted by players. IP info is exactly the same as it is on any listen server game. The console has nothing to do with it. Please quit school and find a manual labor job and leave the technical stuff to those that understand it.

These forums are full of sore losers that can't accept being out played. Unless they are legitimately disconnected from the server, which isn't an uncommon occurrence since game launch.
