Edit:
I'm saying a can't damage Oryx enough to beat him, and people are telling me to use Touch of Malice, a gun that you can only get by beating Oryx. I'll see what I can do. But seriously, thanks for all the responses. My clan will test things this week. Some people are saying high-impact snipers, and others say to stay away from snipers and use primaries or machine guns.
EDIT COMPLETE, BACK TO ORIGINAL POST
My clan finally got together last week to do the raid. It was great to figure everything out on our own, and we're finally REALLY into Destiny for the first time since VoG!
The problem is we didn't beat Oryx.
We couldn't stagger him when his chest opens.
So I'm looking for guidance on that one little step. I'll post my clan's strategy for the Oryx fight below:
Everyone has assigned pillars, we have a floater, and an "aura" runner (the Guardian between dimensions). We all move up toward Oryx at the very beginning to quickly clear the thralls and two knights that spawn, and then everyone gets to their positions. As soon as Oryx picks a side, the runner follows. After Oryx slams the pillar the runner is the first to jump up, followed by the Guardian assigned to that pillar. All other pillar Guardians follow suit in the correct order. The runner starts ascending on the platforms while the pillar holders and floater take care of the ogres and adds. When the runner makes it around, they drop and steal the brand from the yellow bar knight.
All of the above works perfectly fine for us. We can make it to this point EVERY time, but then things go wrong. With that said, if we've already made a mistake, please let me know. I'll post the real troublesome part below:
As the runner I was killing the yellow bar night in two exotic sword attacks right after I stole the brand, and then I switched to a sniper rifle to shoot Oryx's chest. The whole group meets in the middle, in the aura/shield thing to focus on Oryx as soon as his chest starts glowing. We would all be hammering away, but we couldn't stagger him! We wiped every time!
So I noticed we don't get crit damage on Oryx, so I thought, "what's max damage without crits? ... Rockets!" A few of us switched to rockets, but that meant it took longer to focus down the yellow bar (because I didn't have my sword anymore), and the rockets still didn't stagger.
So, what weapons are you using to stagger? We have 3 Titans, do we need WoL bubbles every time? Is there a way to get crits? Maybe I just wasn't hitting the exact center? Is it better to quickly kill the branded knight so we all get focused on Oryx sooner? Or is the sword a wasted heavy by using it only there?
Thanks for any help! The sad part is we know this is only the first part of the boss encounter. I know we'll figure it all out, though.
Edit: A lot of people are saying my light level is too low, but I had the Oryx mask on for shits and giggles last night. I just equipped all my best gear, and that makes me out at 301. However, I'm not usually 301 in the Raid because I change my gear up for each situation. I'm usually around 299 in the raid. Is that high enough? This is only normal mode, we got this.

301 is more than enough for the normal raid. Regardless or what everyone says, use a high impact sniper (1000 yard stare, stillpeircer), If you have any gear that will give you a faster reload then use it. Once you run out of ammo switch to your heavy or primary. If everyone on your team does this you should have no problem staggering him.
-
1 ReplyHaven't completed myself yet but saw videos where people all jump up on the platform to be closer to him after he slammed his fist, that way there's less damage fall off from distance. Maybe someone can confirm but that was one fairly well known YouTubers strat.
-
2 RepliesSo the highest possible light level you can acquire is 301, there's your problem right there you are below recommended light for the raid plus oryx 320 light...
-
If it hasn't already been said, when you do stagger him, make sure you detonate the 4 blights at the same time for max damage. That's a mistake that my team was making.
-
If non of u have touch of malice use high impact, high stability machine guns
-
"Then i switched to sniper" Theres your problem. Use primary to stagger him. ToM in the invulnerability bubble is best for this, but not necessary
-
Touch of malice
-
My team never staggers it with snipers, didn't even do it on our first run. Weapon wise you are almost right. The runner can have a sword dor the vessel, the other 5 members use snipers for the ogre's, scout or pulse rifle's (or lower fire rate, higher impact auto rifle's) for oryx and heavy for the echo. When you steal the brand, kill the vessel (knight) and meet up in the middle (almost between deathsingers platforms but slightly to the side where oryx is) shoot some adds and wait for him to slam his hand. Have everyone aim their primary's at oryx (with weapons of light if you prefer) and start shooting the second oryx opens his chest. You should be able to stagger him with 6 man using primary's on normal mode. On hard mode kings fall i recommmend about 4 people with the touch of malice for the stagger face
-
People saying it's his light lvl, he is at the correct light but currently has a mask on that will drop it. If you look at all his other gear is above the mark. I just wanted to point that out
-
6 RepliesI don't know why ppl aren't hammering u over this simple answer. Do not use snipers to stagger oryx. Snipers are horrible dps with no crit. Obviously ToM is best option but machine gun or high stability fusion rifle both work great. Even primaries would out dps snipers.
-
2 RepliesPrimary and HMG are best. Save snipers for Ogres. The trick is to be ready to shoot as soon as he opens his chest. What are your light levels?
-
Titan with weapons of light. Every time. If you only have one then make sure other classes are making that titan orbs. Super the yellow knight. Hunter golden gun or have the relic with a shorty. Snipers and machine guns for stunning him. But to repeat, especially since your light level is so low, weapons of light is very important.

Edited by cookies934: 10/28/2015 5:13:44 PMLooking at your light level you are way to low, anything under 290 will struggle against Oryx as the rec. light for Oryx is 300, but as long as the group is you're 290+ youll be fine, this is where your issue is IMO. When hitting Oryx in the chest you wont get a crit. just use a high impact sniper or TOM is your best bet. Your strat sounds like the standard strat everyone uses so just get your light level up and i believe you'll be fine. If you need help dont hesitate to message me, GT is cookies934 i wont mind helping you out if peoples light levels are appropriate.

2 RepliesYour Warlock LL is way too low, 271 is bad. Not enough DPS.
-
Edited by Jazeservedyou: 10/28/2015 5:13:44 PMOnly use primary if it's got bonus damage to taken since Oryx is considered taken. Ideally use touch of malice (the only primary you should really use) if not, heavy machine guns work awesome. He should stagger easily, I assume you're talking normal mode too since you didn't mention the light eater knights? What light level is your team? I'd recommend having an average of 295 for this section otherwise it's a little hard to do enough DPS on Oryx. EDIT: If you're on PS4, I could carry 1-2 of your team through the raid so you'll have 2 people with better gear then obviously you could help your friends?

Edited by JadedDark: 10/28/2015 5:12:41 PMIf DPS-ing him is an issue a Titan with Weapons of Light can help. There have also been times when a hunter used Celestial Nighthawk. If no one on your team is running Touch of Malice then I definitely agree with HMG and primary. Mix that with everything I stated and you guys are good. Good luck bro. Note: I forgot about Shadowshot as well.

1 ReplyCould be that your light is WAY too low

2 RepliesAlright the exact routine that my clan and group uses every time. 1: take the thrall and knights out at the beginning of oryx (simple easy and should be done no problem) 2: assign platforms to individuals 3: when oryx slams fist designate 1 relic runner who constantly platform jumps to get the relic then slams the knight to take his brand. 4: have one person constantly patrolling the middle on ogre control (you want someone who has a high impact weapon (black spindle, defiance of Yasmin, a good lmg, sleeper stimulant hits hard to, with touch of malice. I personally use this setup (touch of malice, defiance of Yasmin, quillims terminus.)) side note. There only needs to be three people on the platforms for the platform jumping section, there will be one person that has a relic icon above there platform, that person can help the ogre controller in the middle with killing the ogres. 5: relic runner grabs the relic comes down from the middle and steals the brand from the knight and runs back to the middle between the pillars the death singers are on. (Make sure all ogres are dead you don't want to wipe because you didn't kill the knight in time) by the time you kill the knight oryx should have slammed his fist and you should be ready to shoot him in the chest. 6: oryx stun phase. Once oryx slams his fist it's about five or so seconds after he will open his chest. ( when he opens his chest there will be a black blight in the center, focus fire on the blight with sniper rifles (high impact. Black spindle, defiance of Yasmin, touch of Malice, 1000 yard stare,) just keep focusing on that blight in the center of his chest till he stuns 7: as soon as you stun him the next part starts. As you kill the lighteater ogres they will leave behind a blight where you killed them. (You kill the ogres during the platform jump to get the relic) ok back on track, as soon as you stun oryx EACH person goes to the blight on the se side as there platform, you have to run to the blight detonate the blight (wait for your name in the bottom left corner it will tell you when you have completed) as soon as you detonate, run back to the center before oryx kills you. There should be two people in the middle doing damage to oryx and four people detonating blights. (The two people in the middle can continue to shoot oryx in his chest and do a little damage. 8: oryx will fall down the side of the ship (nope haven't beat him yet) he then goes back to the original area in which he spawned. At this point he will push off the pillars (everyone go back to their original platform) you will have to run in circles around your platform for about 20 or so seconds don't stand still you will get killed) 4 guys run circles around their platform 1 or 2 can run up and down the middle. 9:repeat steps 3,4,5,6,7 10: you may have to repeat step 8 here depending on your damage to oryx 11: repeat steps 3,4,5,6,7 12: this time after you repeat all of the above steps again oryx will move back to his original spawn point. And he will summon a black bubble, he will spawn 1 person in randomly at a time into the bubble, when you spawn into the bubble your focus is going to need to be on the echo of oryx who hides in the shadows on the outside of the bubble until he charges you, ( when he charges he will hit you with a sword AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS) if you don't kill him quick enough then you will wipe, as people are spawning into the bubble there will be taken thrall that spawn on the outside. The focus of the people waiting to spawn in must be killing the ADS that spawn and keeping them out. Once you kill the echo you will spawn back on the dreadnought. 13: repeat step 3,4,5,6,7,12 14: by this time oryx should be literally no health. When you see this he will move back to the original spawn point one last time. He will open his chest again, as soon as you see him open his chest, unload everything you have in your special ammo and heavy ammo into the black hole and kill the son of a beetch. 15: congratulations you have just defeated oryx collect your loot. Hope this helps man

Lots of good suggestions in here; The main thing is to be hitting him in the exact center, and with scouts and lmgs. The sword is a good choice for the runner, and bringing a couple Nighthawks wouldn't hurt.
-
I don't know what your light levels are but it sounds like the problem is speed. If you're quick with the relic you can collectively kill the knight and turn to oryx before he opens his chest. I'm sure it's been said but Touch of Malice makes the raid so easy. It's infinite bullets, no reload required. You need 45 fragments to obtain the malice but it's well worth the effort
-
Snipers, high impact HMG'S or touch of malice If you don't have these them weapons of light A hunter with celestial nighthawk for the GG shot will help too
-
Scout Rifles, LMGS, and Snipers if you don't have TOM. If all six are shooting his chest, you should stun him pretty quickly.
-
So, few things. First, at the beggining, funnel the thralls to where you will stand when you fight oryx, that way you can kill them with supers and leave orbs for your titans. Always try to have weapons of light. Empter your sniper, then switch to primary and keep firing. Avoid damage drop off with your primary by using a scout rifle or moving a little closer to Oryx.
-
1 ReplyBefore touch of malice, my team had no problem with all 6 of us using primary's to stagger oryx. You could try using a nighthawk golden gun. Deals about 30k. To his chest. Have two hunters alternating t and your good!

5 RepliesWhat Damage level snipers are you using?? If you or your clan needs help running the raid and defeating oryx I'm willing to help, cleared normal mode many times already and always willing to help
