Elemental primaries didn't take away variety. They had a niche and that niche was burns. Only two places had burns. Night fall and prison. So any elemental primary that you had really only shined in the night fall and prison. And prison is now irrelevant.
(That along with bungie nerfing player burn damage AND keeping all elemental primaries in year one seems like over kill if they're just trying to Make them less powerful right?)
How is this restricting gun choice? That's only two activities you had a CHANCE to use your elementals (because sometimes there would be no burns at all) and it's restricting gun choice? Elementals don't do any better than kinetic weapons when there's not a burn active or it's not the same type. If you chose to keep the same gun equipped for everything then that's your choice.
If the problem is that all elemental primaries are naturally stronger, even without burns
1. They should be you get them for beating end game content
2.Make elemental primaries exotic so having them equipped all the time costs an exotic spot
3. Make some elemental primaries more in line with everything else or provide an outlet for a gun to get an element.
Personally I think it'd be cool to unlock a feature to add or change elements on legendary weapons when you Max out a certain weapons grimore. So when you get all the grimore kills (10k?) for scouts you gain the ability to adjust that weapons element or add one on scout rifles. Sort of like a weapon mastery. And you'd be able to unlock it for all weapons.
There are plenty of ideas that could have been implemented but like everything else that just decide to take it away from you.
The real problem is that bungie is a combination of greedy and lazy. Instead of properly brainstorming ideas to come to a compromise between what the company wants and what the player wants, they just take it from you. There. Problem solved.
And for everyone saying reforge should have solved the problem, the problem is people only reforged for pvp. Tell me what's a good pve roll for an auto rifle? But what's a good pvp roll for an auto rifle? Glass half full and perfect balance/third eye (depending on weapon).
Reforge was great but for the wrong reasons. It made everything pvperfect. In fact, if they wanted it to be pve based it should have been a station to add or change elements. Because burns have no use in pvp AND That way any legendary could have a burn, thus making elemental primaries less special.
Bungie is really great at shooting themselves in the foot but suck at bandaging it up. Instead, they'd just rather let the game bleed out. And you let them
TL; DR

1 ReplyThe problem with using burn primaries was that they became the meta. Sure, I always had the choice to use something else, but why would I? I would be nerfing myself to use anything else. The larger problem was not that burnl primaries were OP, it was nothing could compete with them. Bungie just took the path of least resistance and removed them from the balancing equation
-
1 ReplyNot to mention they were overused because they were harder to get. They're trophies as well.
-
4 RepliesI'm fine with them being gone. Do I wish we could have them? Sure, bit I'm not gonna lose any sleep that they're gone.
-
7 RepliesThat's a giant wall of whining. Want cheese with that too?

It seems kinetic weapons are pretty useless against elemental shields now...so a primary with an elemental damage would be great other than arc
-
1 ReplyBecause shielded enemies were only found in nightfall and PoE.

1 ReplyI've always wanted to make any primary have a burn it would be so worth the grind. They won't do it though maybe because they're afraid of the results or that it's too hard to code. Yet my motivation to do trails and Oryx dropped because of the no burns, I want something that says you did this, here's a flaming hand cannon for your efforts. But alas it is what it is, maybe year 2 they'll listen some more

1 ReplyEdited by Duaneski: 11/5/2015 11:14:24 PMI'm confused by the TLDR, are you seriously expecting me to read stuff and comprehend it all on my own? :/ ... I do agree w most of your post though. I don't particularly like the idea of being able to add elemental via grimoire... Personally, I think it should roll in place of another perk. So if you get it, it is going to be a sub par weapon in other areas (making it really shine in NF, but probably not great in other arenas) Would def make them more like HoW weapons, so some people might hate them :p but I think that's an easy way to make a balanced elemental primary

2 RepliesThe only issue i had with primary elemental burns, was they were just as effective as kinetic weapons against different elemental shields. Should of made a solar weapon ineffective against void/arc shields. It would have made you choose different secondary and heavy loadouts
-
Thank god burn primaries are gone. All I gotta say.
-
1 ReplyThey should be exotics.
-
In strikes with a lot of one particular enemy type then certain elemental primary weapons could be beneficial. Examples: Valus would be nice with solar, Taniks would be nice with arc. Doesn't change a majority of the strike but when shielded enemies tend to have a particular shield the corresponding primary burn would be more efficient than kinetic damage. I don't mind not having elemetal primaries, just that your argument is slightly flawed.
-
5 RepliesThey still did additional damage maybe not much but still more than an a kinetic gun
-
4 RepliesActually, using anything but an elemental primary was stupid. Against u shielded enemies, kinetic and elemental weapons did same damage. Put a shield in the mix, and kinetic is useless. Strike with a lot of captains? Throw on the fang or Fate.

9 RepliesGuns don't kill people People kill people
-
1 ReplyIf they are only good for nightfslls now, then obviously they are not needed.
-
2 RepliesNot gonna read that but elemental primaries did remove choice and made it to where only a few primaries were good

This is just another example of Bungie wanting us to play their game their way. We are not allowed to use certain weapons over and over again because we like them otherwise Bungie will change the game and require us o use other weapons because they say so. Other game developers are like, "BLAM it, use whatever you want as much as you want, have fun" but not Bungie.

3 RepliesEdited by Orig1nal Twist: 11/5/2015 9:10:23 PMOnly red the first part... Elemental weapons (let's say solar) Helped so much against killing wizards at any point in the game not just NF or POE

2 RepliesGood idea on the weapon mastery unlocking burns on primary weapons. I think to make it a little bit different, make it so you need. Certain amount of kills with the weapon. Use the eyasluna for example, get 100 pvp kills with the weapon to unlock your choice of a burn, since you get the weapon from crucible, those are the kills you need to unlock the burn. The doom of chelchis on the other hand you would need say 500 pve kills to unlock a burn of your choice. For exotics, using the red death as an example, get 1000 kills between pve and pvp with pvp kills counting as 5 and pve counting as 1, I think it would make it more fair with a choice of your burn and you would be able to change it whenever you want but only on the exotic weapons.

5 RepliesThere's a few corrections I'd like to give to you: 1. Yes, technically, what Bungie did was take away a few options from our primary pool, but they did that because of a philosophical stance they have. Sure, we could always technically use whatever, but obviously Bungie believes that if elemental primaries are there, that's what people are going to use (which was supported by their data). For whatever reason(s), they are against the idea of making anything elemental, so, in order to get more weapons in use, they just had the one option. But hopefully you see my point. Imagine a smoker trying to quit; technically he could, but removing all cigarettes will do it for sure (not a great example, but yea). I say that all objectively. I liked the burns. 2. People used re-rolling for whatever. I mean, technically I don't know (nor do I know how you could possibly know), but really. Firstly I used it for both pve and pvp, and I'm sure I'm not some weird outlier with that. Secondly, hell, it was there, why wouldn't they? You're probably thinking it was mostly just for pvp because that's where you really got to see other peoples' weapons. Re-rolling was great, I dearly miss it (besides the RNG part to it), and if I could I'd perfect everything once again.
