But from what I know I believe that they wouldn't have won. The Forerunners had numbers and the technology to match those numbers (to the best of my knowledge). And didn't the forerunners find a way to imprison the last Precursor at Charum Harkor? I have no idea how they were able to overcome the race that created the Flood, but I see it as very much assured that one will succeed the next, just as humanity did with the forerunners.
