Maths question: Black Spindle vs 1000-Yard Stare
In the hard raid with some fellow LFGers earlier, doing Golgorath on my alt. My light level was 310 and I was using a 311 1000-Yard-Stare. My Black Spindle is only 295 light, hence why I wasn't using it. The Fireteam leader kept yelling about how we should be using Black Spindle because it does crazy damage and we wouldn't waste time reloading, and was getting particularly frustrated at me for not using it.
My question is: Was he right to? Even with the light reduction I would take by equipping the 295, would it still do more damage than the 311 Stare, assuming all other variables (like the amount of time I was crit-hitting Golg) stayed the same?
I would have tested it but a) the guy yelling at me was really annoying and I didn't want him to be right and b) I'm too lazy to work it out myself
Tl:dr: Does a 295 Black Spindle do more crit damage to Golgorath than a 311 1000-yard stare?
Edit: The general consensus seems to be that the Black Spindle is better even with the 1-2 level light drop, but that it doesn't matter what I use provided I'm doing enough damage. Reckon I'll stick with the 1000YS as I feel more comfortable using it. Thanks everyone!

I run 1000 yard stare for EVERYTHING it's the best. Plus, I don't like the spindle. But Im one of the gaze grabbers so I usually run red death at golgoroth.

You just need a good sniper, depending on your load out you can equip either. I use both depending what exotic I want equipped. With that said the spindle is great for drug shots the 1000 yard stare doesn't take an exotic slot.

2 RepliesMy 1000YS with spray and play, Also gear with increased reload with specials or snipers makes it ridiculously fast to reload. -blam!- black spindle. Its a joke of a weapon and not worth an exotic slot. Black spindle can lick my arsehole...

How was your damage total compared to the other team members after wipes?

Not reloading allows for more dps over time. Even if you drop light levels to use the spindle. I use my spindle for the war priest and golgoroth and switch to 1000 yard for sister and oryx since I'm using my ToM.

Its impact is better and no loading means constant DPS and for certain bosses a constant stagger. I use my 1000 yard all the time, but depending on what your light would drop to I'd use Black Spindle.

Black Spindle has more impact than 1000 and has a higher DPS due to automatic reloading.

Edited by monkyken: 10/26/2015 12:51:46 PMDamage is supposedly worked out by a combination of your total light and the light of the item, from what I gather as long as your Total light was not going to drop below 310 black spindle might have been better, if say you would have gone from 309 to 307 the damage loss from changing would have been significant. I believe say at Oryx if your total light is below 305 you do no or close to no damage so if you went from 1000 yard at 307 to BS and went to 305 you would suddenly be doing nothing. It depends on the situation you are in, your total light level so there are a lot more variables now.

5 RepliesRaid is a team play so you should do what ever you want to do. Who cares about DPS because you can wipe 'till the end of world and other members of your raid team are just faceless nobodies. Its my game and I do what ever I please, my mommy said Im special. I want to reload my 1000 when spindle next to me shoots 3-5 shots in target. 7 shots with 1000 is better than 14 with spindle...

2 RepliesDoesn't matter, but I wouldn't reload unless you have fast reload. I would equip a good scout in primary and switch to primary once sniper ammo is gone with spindle or without.

Though I just put my spindle to 310 from 304 so I'll probably use that next time... Edited in a video I already had with the reload speed. It's fairly fast. Let's me put 24 rounds on warpriest with a lot of time to spare.

17 RepliesI have a 317 eirene with clown cartridge and triple tap and it can fire 7-8 shots a mag on precision with a faster fire rate than spindle. I used it during hard warpriest last night and was out damaging all 4 spindles. It gets 2-3 free bullets a mag so with 24 rounds, it turns to about 35 shots on max ammo. We wiped when he was 1/3 health and I had over 650k compared to the next guy at 500k or so. It's an amazing roll, spindle out damages most legendary snipers, but not every single one..

2 RepliesIf you are regularly wiping (sounds like you did) you csn easily see how much damage you did on the wipe-screen. Compare it to the damage you teammates outputted with spindles. If its close to double, than that little light difference wouldnt matter much (substract 5 or 10% or something). Anyway, every time you reload, a spindle could have gotten another 2 shots off. Even at lower light it should be obvious those 2 extra shots deal way more damage than you could compensate with lightlevel.

from my limited testing, there is no difference between the damage two identical weapons with different light will do as long as your overall light is the same as for Black Spindle, it's got higher impact than 1k Stare, so it does more damage per bullet. it also refills when you keep hitting crits, so technically, your overall DPS should be higher too. however, I like my 1k Stare and Eirene better so I use those two for Raid and I'm still able to outperform guys with Spindle on a regular basis (I'm using fast reload gauntlets) and even so some guys do more damage with Spindle, the difference in damage is too small to really matter so it comes down to what you are more comfortable with

Remember the spindle has 3 shots at a higher impact, with the same ammo reserve. So more damage overall and without reloading higher dps. A couple light levels is nothing. Infuse that thing, man! 1000 yard stare is a pvp weapon.

Obviously either of those will do the job. It's possible that single shot your 1000 yard at higher light will do more damage. But the lack of reloading probably means BS will do more during the damage phase overall. But at Golgoroth that difference would be much less marked, than say warpriest, when you empty 22 criticals on boss, plus an entire primary and heavy clip, per round. There you'd struggle to do more than empty all you 1000 yard bullets I think. I confess as soon as warpriest dropped me a 316 Yasmin, I infused into into BS - 313 now and does crazy damage.

Should he throw a tantrum over you choosing your own damn sniper ? No . As long as you're using a viable weapon for Golgorath he shouldn't get so butthurt over the dps numbers . Black spindle however does do a lot of damage due to the lack of reload needed . (Eg higher dps).

Use what you want to use. I always use what I prefer and I still do my fair share of damage.

Spindle is better. But you made the right call using a 311 stare over it.
