Edit 2:
Just tested some of these things.
Sword kills will not count as ability kills. HOWEVER, IF YOU DEPLETE YOUR ENERGY THROUGH BLOCKING, THE HILT WILL GLITCH AND COUNT AS MELEE ABILITY KILLS. You must be blocking air though. Don't get hit and just find a quiet place to drain your heavy ammo.
This does persist though death. This is the fastest way to get ability kills. Every pve hilt kill will count as an ability kill.
In addition if you grab a tomb husk orb while your melee energy is full, you will be granted infinite melee energy and it will count towards melee ability kills.
However, it does not work for shadow shot hunters, probably because their melee ability, smoke bomb, is coded as a grenade and you do not get infinite grenade energy.
This is much faster than any other way. If you are done collecting mats, just head into the waking the hive mission, block your sword down to no energy, hilt away, die to knight, repeat.
Edit: thought I would update the post with some of the more interesting options.
1. Pvp kills count for five times as many as pve. Head into mayhem for lots of super and grenade kills.
2. (Untested) If you use your sword to block until all of its ammo is gone, then the hilt gets glitched and acts as an elemental ability melee.
3. If you do the lost to light missions, while holding a tomb husk, your melee will stay infinitely charged. Go to the two lock door, grab one of the orbs, melee everything but one, die and repeat.
OP:
Day one player, but I took a break after getting the 3 PoE exotics, and came back recently.
Just started doing the exotic sword quest lines, and the grind is real.
I didn't mind the major kills (triple hive on earth patrol).
I didn't mind the 25 sword pvp kills (hilt kills yay!).
I didn't even mind the gathering mats ones (I have really good farming routes from vanilla).
But the ability kills one is super annoying.
So far, I've just gone into fist of Crota, charged my super before the sword guy, then blade danced/golden gun combustioned the next room and go to orbit. Rinse/Repeat.
(I have all 3 on my hunter).
What was everyone else doing?
What's the best way for void hunters? Getting extra long grenades and using the venom smoke bombs?
Not having quiver sucks...
And I think killing the tethered enemies doesn't count, just the ones hit by the arrow?
