To be clear: I do not want the best gear in the game for no effort.
But for those who tell those of us who are stuck to "go find another game", you should consider the following:
Only problem with that mindset is that it's ultimately going to cause the game to self-terminate.
Point is, the game's particular grind (and the relatively short window to get that done) alienates all but the 6-10% of the players who can commit the time in such a short burst. The other 90%+ of its players will find that they're left in the dust within 2-3 months. People on here seem to have a difficult time separating those who want everything- for-nothing from the main player base who are simply expecting the game to provide fair opportunity to progress.
The loot system and the quest systems have very precise requirements that pretty much require an organized fireteam that can function on the same play schedule AND have a substantial amount of free time to get the work done in that short period. All I'm saying is, like it or not, only about 6-10% of the people playing (and financing the development of) this game can achieve the end-goals that justify continuing on.
Iron Banner and it's disingenuous loot system this time around are prime examples. Failing to provide the drops they promised coupled with providing items at a paltry 280 light meant that grinding all the way to level 5 left a less than 1% chance of acquiring a single thing to move one's level upward. All that time over several days playing crucible-to receive nothing more than permission to spend Marks (mostly earned elsewhere through other grinding) on gear that may have good stats, but poor light. Yes, infusion should rectify that, but then we're back to the fact that the loot drops through the game fail to provide enough light to infuse much beyond 290.
I'm not crying entitlement here. It's not entitlement to have done the work of Iron Banner only to have failed to advance my character by a single point in terms of light.
Court of Oryx hit & miss, as well. I put almost 5 hours in there yesterday using my own runes as well as sticking around helping others. Highest light level of anything obtained was around 285.
I'm at 296-297 and that's from grinding a couple hundred hours of heroic strikes, and a few smaller quests solo.
Not being a raider, I "could" be able to live with that and I don't really need raid gear since I don't do raids. Except, because payouts on other events such as iron banner are so terrible and the heroics have mainly become overly-long ways to get weapons parts, even getting my light to 300-305 is like chasing a unicorn.
But a month from now, that WILL alienate me from the few parts of the game that apply to me. Iron banner will be riddled with players who have the time in their day to perform all the tasks/raids/etc. when those people are at L310+, I would be fighting 13+ light levels above my own. And at that point, my ability to actually play this game won't be a whole lot more involved than normal crucible and heroic strikes. And that represents a very large part of the player base.
Call me casual/dirty random (I am). But those players are a BIG part of this game (and the designer's budgets). If fireteam-organized quests and full-blown raid runs are the only means for people like me to remain competitive, then we simply can't play more than a few more weeks from now. These forums are hostile as hell between die-hards and casuals, but the without both, this game won't have the players to keep it going.
I'm not saying it should be easier to get the cool swords or the exotic stranger's rifle. They're top-level items that require top commitment to get. No problem. What I am saying is, I should have a clear path (including an appropriate grind) to advance my light level enough to remain relevant to the game. I don't need strikes to rain down 320 light rare gear to infuse. But dirty casuals like me should have a clear path that we "can" perform on our own to at least stay within 10 light levels of or competition in things like IB and ToO.
It's really too bad that this community will likely take a flamethrower to this post and remain devisive when supporting each other is the better way to have more of us engaged and more of us to finance better DLC's going forward.
I'm beginning to wonder if Bungie isn't actually trying to re-define it's game into a smaller, niche game for only those with the highest level of dedication and time to invest.
Put another way, big AAA are funded by casual gamers. The hard core gamers who play Destiny every day are in the minority in the console world. If Destiny doesn't appeal to casual gamers, the playlists won't have a healthy enough population to support matchmaking and Activision won't have the revenue it wants to fund more "Destiny". Think of the Kotaku article and the visit Diablo III devs paid to Bungie.
“They were saying, like, ‘Hey, random numbers are not fun—dice rolls are not fun. You can give the illusion of randomness, but you want to weight it towards the player… The only point you have to deliver on is that when people leave your game—because they will—when they leave your game, they need to be happy.’”
As much as we forum goers play the game, only 26% of players have equipped all armor and weapons slots with a legendary or exotic. That's 74% of players who weren't happy when they left.

1 ReplyActually bro, I could understand the thinking path you are on, & I respect you & anyone for individual opinions; but, if I may ask you to consider this concept I respectfully share with you. It is only to help alleviate some of the frustration you are feeling (seeing as how this may very well be the only opportunity to possibly receive it,sadly)... Think of the leveling up process as watching a show that is quite long, already filmed & well into, say, it's 6th season currently filming. Since this is already filmed, it's only a matter of watching it, that leads to the final episode. At which point, a wait till it restarts again anew. Some, depending on the length of time invested watching, will finish at its estimated time. Others of many varied lengths, accordance to each persons investment. However some may say, you could not compete with the knowledge some others may have. They had the extra time you did not. But... That is only assessing success with a linear amount of time, or to say, being superior to another simply because of the particular time of day/on any said day. However, no one person (skill set aside) actually IS superior to you in the actuality of experiencing the gameplay itself. Because in the end, when everyone (For all intents and purposes) gets to the credits of that last episode, you may be watching the final scene later than the other guy on October "whatever" at Something O'clock, but each episode you watched was basically the same. I.e.~ neither of you spent too drastic a difference of Actual time playing. Yours was only extended from smaller segments spaced further apart. This game will never leave you behind, (to a lesser degree now than what it was originally) it was notorious for resetting the status quo. Vendor gear rendering VoG gear irrelevant etc. if you miss 1 Iron Banner, in 4 weeks will be another. IB has never been where you supplement full raid gear level, only partial. Even then, the lines that parallel Xurner/Earner are audibly drawn. "True 30's" (or whichever # analogy you prefer), or "Fake ones". This equalization of the status quo is not only intentional, it's absolutely necessary to ensure "No guardian gets left behind." Much to the chagrin of the Elitist mentality that usually crack out and bleed any new content dry as fast as it humanly (or otherwise) possible. *a good point of contention for timed gated material, to which I applaud and enthusiastically approve. Needless to say, today's grinding is nothing in comparison to the bullsh*t we had to do when it first launched. The loot cave was never anything more than a desert mirage. The first month every night at one point or another, no matter what dream I was dreaming, Spinmetal was somewhere in it popping up, either noticeably or in the peripheral, being all sparkly and shiny shining and reflecting & what nots. Freaking Spinmetal. Not even kidding. My ADD is already bad enough, God forbid I see something shiny while I'm talking to someone, I'll forget what the Hełł I was talking about. Point being, it's really not bad at all {but those weapon parts drought? Bro, ugh...}. You aren't being left behind either, you are just watching the show in shorter, more spread out intervals. Plus, when you get matched into future IB matches, you will only be match made into closer to your level matches. Sorry for the wall O' text, but I only wished giving a fresh, positive alternative to your rightful concerns. After all, we all want to have the best Destiny we can get to play. Hope it helps bro, and if nothing else, at least take comfort in the fact not all of us here in the forums are @sshats.

I have no issues with the grind. I played WoW since the end of vanilla and that was a grind. Destiny is a hell of a lot more accommodating than that was. But with destiny I also only play it to have fun.

Ok so you want to be able to hit high light lvs without raiding, that's fine and a reasonable request. You want to do it before the hard mode raid is out? Less reasonable. In the past IB has dropped raid lv gear (or had it purchasable) but not in it's first outing when the lv cap has been increased, usually it's the third or fourth one that's on par with raid lv gear. My assumption is that bungie wants to give an incentive to raid. Depending on your console there are plenty if people that will take you through the raid. If you are in ps4 I'll take you through it. Otherwise there are the Sherpa clans around that will help you out. Even if you only have a small time window to play in (and hitting lv 5 in IB doesn't sound like a small window) you should be able to knock out a raid with an experienced team at the very least get through half. The first chest you can get loot from is the puzzle/encounter after the jumping puzzle, maybe 10-15 mins allowing time to mess up the jumps. That encounter takes just over 5 mins, then a dps race boss fight maybe 10-20 mins including a wipe or 2. In less than an hour you have the chance for 2 drops of 300+ gear. The best bit is checkpoints, if you have to bail due to IRL commitments you can come back to the encounter you were up to. If you are really short in time ask someone for a checkpoint and run from there.

3 RepliesI can appreciate what you are saying. The grind can be bad. The truth is, this game stops around 295 light playing solo. I am a filthy casual myself, and just once a week or so, I'll get a solid 2 hour block to play. I get on the forums and on destiny lfg, and I get into the raid. Some one was patient enough to take a noob the first time. We didn't finish, but I got gear and know how for next time. And so it goes. If you aren't willing to raid, you are at max light. Reroll a new character maybe? If you do want to raid, add me. Use those lfg sites. Use bungie.net. You'll meet players to raid with next time - and network with their friends, too. Pretty soon there are a dozen people who you can jump in with anytime for any activity. Bungie has designed a game where raiding brings you from 90-100%. You either have to do it, or not do it. From another filthy causal - do it! It's not as bad as it seems! I'll even help if I can. Good luck.

1 ReplyTalks about not having time to grind. Spent 5 hours at court of oryx yesterday? Lotta time doin garbage. No wonder the meaningful grind escapes you.
-
4 RepliesIf you don't like the grind you can just, and I know this is a big concept so try really hard to understand it, not do the grind.

Ummmm I disagree with a lot of things in this post. The statistics are completely made up. Does anyone really think that only 6 to 10 percent of people playing the game put a significant amount of time in it? It's at least 50 percent if not more that spend a lot of time playing. The fact is that the casual player base is the smallest base of players so it makes sense to not cater to them. Additionally it only makes sense that the raid gear be the only gear in the game capable of getting you over 300 (aside from 310 exotic drops obviously) because that's just the way these games work. If you were able to be on the same playing field level wise as players who put a ton of time in by simply playing an hour or two like twice a week then there would be no incentive to raid or do any end game content. The game is made for people who want to put a lot of time in that's clear because there's an obvious grinding element to just about every aspect of the game. This is not going to change (hopefully) so that leaves a few options which are accept that you'll be lower level and at a disadvantage and continue playing, stop playing, or commit to putting the time in required to get where you want to be.

If you have other shit in life going on tgats your deal which means you cant have everything in the game. Get over it

Most comments like these have an issue. They use the word "work" to describe what is done in the game. Its a video game, not work. If this really feels like work to you, why would you play it? If you aren't having fun playing it, why are you playing?

There is no real grind anymore

To long to read but they wanted an mmo and that's what a mmo is bro

All I can say that might help you is take a day to do one or two CPs in the raid, try to start at the totems each week because that's the first armor drop location, then find a warp riser CP, then golgoroth, et cetera, so far I haven't been able to do any raids yet but hopefully starting tomorrow that will change :) hope this helps

1 ReplyFinally made it to 301 and haven't raided. I suddenly realized each character had gotten a 300 armor drop for a different piece. So I stole my titan and hunters gear infused on my warlock and hit 300! Then first 3/coins after got 310 telesto. Put it in my sniper in case a raid pops up this week for me. Sadly I only got 2 290's before running out of coins for exotics so stuck till Friday.

TTK, as much acclaimed as it is, actually made me leave Destiny. It's my fault, I'm sure of that. I don't find the game interesting enough. At the moment I want to play a game that offers a solid way to progress, not just the chance of having the probability of dropping useful items. I really hope that in a near future, character progression will be tied to XPs. I play enough and well, I level up.

3 RepliesNightfalls now have the chance to drop gear up to 310. There is your way to get at and above 300. Though it'll take longer then people that raid, I honestly think it should. Banana gear should not be max, at most it should be 290. I think trails gear should be the only crucible activity that should have 300, maybe 310, rewards. Though with the amount of lag switchers and whatnot that riddle that mode, some people wouldn't like that almost max gear could drop from it.

3 RepliesI'm guessing Trials of osiris will be your other route to 320.

9 RepliesI left way before the grind effected me. I could see the endgame though and just sold the game back to the store. I love shooters and played the shit out of the Halo series. I expected that this game would have an amazing Campaign and great Multiplayer. I also thought maybe that Bungie after all this time would have dedicated servers. Aside from the horrendous amount of disconnects, (I have a decent internet speed and rarely lose connection in my other shooters). I thought that this game failed my expectations. I no longer play it. Doing the same action and tactics over and over and over is just not for me.

Well said sir!

Tldr play the game or dont. Your not forced tp do anything.

1 ReplyTrust me the light difference is unnoticeable I was killing/dying to low light levels just at about the same speed as high levels

How is it fair to those people that they put in the time and effort, and you just get a slow stroll to max damage and defense? There is a reason it's called the "endgame", it's meant to be the top tier of players who have completed the vast majority of casual content. It's not meant for everyone, honest to god truth.
