Since writing this guide, the nice people at the site have put everything into one folder. All you will need is this file and a zipping utility to unzip the files. The rest of this write-up no longer really applies, but I'm not about to delete all that hard work!
It has come to my attention (from a few sources) that a new version of Marathon has come out. The new version can be downloaded here as it is version 1.6. It apparently has all the stuff in one file so there is no need to download anything else. I have not checked this file as I am on a 56k and that would take forever to do. information on how to play Marathon online is at the end of this thread. Again, I have not played online since I have a 56k. There should never again be an update to this post.
Because of the immense popularity of my original post, and the big return of Marathon topics, and due to the fact that many people had trouble with it and won't read into it anymore, I've made a second post here, with much more info about how to play, and some frequently asked questions too. If you've had trouble with it, I hope that this explanation will be a little better for you.
So what do we need to play Marathon on the PC? First off, we need a copy of Alephone. Alephone is a great program used to play Marathon 2 on the PC. It works by letting your PC understand the code used in the Marathon 2 engine. Since M2 and Marathon ºº (Infinity) both use the same engine, Alephone works for both. But the problem comes when you try to play Marathon on the PC, it uses a different engine that M2, so it doesn't work. Luckily, there is a solution, a free solution. That's right, did I forget to mention playing Marathon is totally 100% free? But don't worry, after playing it, you'll feel like playing M2 and Mºº, so you'll buy the Mac Action sack, which has Marathon in it, so you won't feel bad, in fact, I guaran-dam-tee you'll feel happy. As happy as Frankie would feel is he beat SketchFactor in a game of Halo 2! That's really happy! The solution is to download M1A1. M1A1 is basically a special M2 scenario, which happens to have all the Marathon levels in it.
So, here are all of the sites you must visit for the game:
To download Alephone, you must go to http://source.bungie.org/ and click one of the links on the right, depending on which system you use. The download is only a paltry 1.2 Mb, so even us 56k users can handle this one with ease.
To download M1A1 (Marathon) go to http://orbitalarm.bungie.org/downloads/alephone.html and find M1A1 for SDL v1.5. It's the third one down. This download is a lot bigger, weighing in at over 15 Mb, but it's well worth it, even over a 56k modem. You can also grab the Marathon music files from the same area, but they are really big files, and I got along fine without them, although the game did seem to lack a little something while playing it.
Do you have Winzip? You'll need it to extract the files. I'm pretty sure Win XP has a way to extract it all by itself, but just in case, here is a link to download it. You can use it for 21 days before having to pay, but you'll only need to use it twice, maybe three times if you get the music files for M1A1.
The Mac Action Sack can apparently no longer be bought.
So now you have the files on your computer, so what do you do with them? Well, first off, unpack them. Right-click on the file and find a selection that says extract here. Maybe it'll say something different, but the general rule is extract here. Maybe when it gets done downloading, it will ask you if you want to extract it, say yes. Do this for both files, and you now have an M1A1 folder and an Alephone folder. Here comes the tricky part, you need to open the M1Ai folder, open the Alephone folder, and drag all of the stuff from the Alephone folder into the M1A1 folder. It should look like this when you're done. To play the game, double click on Alephone. Voila! You are done!
I'll answer a couple of common questions:
Q. Is Marathon fun?
A. Yes. As fun as Halo? Maybe, maybe not. It depends who you ask.
Q. Is this the real Marathon? It says stuff about new levels and monsters.
A. No, not quite. Some people have said that M1A1 is a lot spookier than the real Marathon. I guess I'll agree since some areas were really dark, and scary. Don't play it if you're afraid of sudden noises.
Q. My computer sucks. Will it run Marathon?
A. The old Macs Marathon was made to run on suck too by today's standards. If you're on the net with your computers, I'll bet it will run Marathon.
Q. How do I configure the controls?
A. From the main menu, click PREFERANCES, Then click CONTROLS. From there, CONFIGURE KEYBOARD should do the trick.
Q. How do I jump/crouch?
A. Sorry, the only jumping you'll be doing is by blowing up a grenade at your feet. Or a rocket (I DON'T recommend using rockets to do this). You can't crouch either.
Q. There's no music, even though I have the files in the right place. What do I do?
A. I have been informed that the newest version of Alephone does not support the music. Ho hum, just play the music on a repeating loop if you really want to. I got through it alright without any music, although I'm probably the worse for it.
Q. How do I get back health, and save?
A. There will be terminals on the wall that allow you to do that. You also have an oxygen bar; it's the blue one. Yes, you will need to find oxygen, but not on very many levels.
Q. Is Marathon hard?
A. Hell yes it is! I'd place Marathon's difficulty of normal at Halo's Heroic. It also has a lot of switches to push and hidden doors to activate. Oh, and ceilings that come crushing down on your head. It's is not for the casual gamer.
Q. There are switches to far to reach. I can't activate them.
A. Use a grenade, or an overcharge Fusion Pistol blast. That should do the trick.
Q. I am so blaming lost on this level. Just tell me what to do.
A. No. Don't go to http://www.marathon.org/spoiler/s_index.html. It won't help you. But really, only go here if you can't beat it on your own. Don't just give up.
Q. I can't get it installed, what am I doing wrong?
A. Well, I'll probably regret this, but just PM me and I'll help you out. It helps if you tell me what OS you have (Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP). From there, we'll try to see what's going on. If you're doing this for a Mac OS, good luck. Maybe one of the mods could help out with that part. Of course, there is always asking in the Underground if you're really stuck. Bungie will be more than willing to help out I'm sure.
Q. When I try full screen, it doesn't work. Now I can't even get it started.
A. There is a preferences folder. Delete it. Don't try running it in full screen again. It's picky about that.
Well, that just about does it. If I missed anything major, please tell me in a PM. I'll be sure to add it to this write up. For those that want to know, my original post about this is here.
And one more thing, everyone thank Louis Wu of Bugnie.org in their response to this thread (don't spam his mailbox). He made this all possible long before I had even heard of Bungie. Go Louis!
How to play Marathon MP (by Jager)
Okay, I've sorta seen it occasionally asked and skirted around in a few of the marathon threads, but i figured i'd try and consolidate all the info as well as prospective players looking to experience Marathon in a way never thought possible. You just haven't played Marathon until you've SPNK'ed your friends and Totz'ed them to charred and burned peices!
First, some information:
Marathon, in its original incarnation, was a LAN only MP game. This required(s) hooking up computers physically (in the modern days we'd use a hub and our ethernet ports, but back then, this could be through serial ports!), turning on appletalk, and then going at it! Marathon featured replays so you can relive your and your opponents demise!
Today, that LAN feature hasn't much changed, except that Aleph One will also allow you to cross platform b/n other Aleph One users, no matter the OS. (see their network read me for details).
But Aleph One, after many, many years of hoping and praying eventually added in TCP/IP. This requires the host personally handing out his IP address to all the potential players(joiners) who all have to enter in the address into the IP field under the "Join Game" menu.
I myself have enjoyed a number of games with very little to no lag (check those damn firewalls!). I enjoy the fact that the host gives the map to all the players at the start of a game. This means you don't necessarily have to have the maps the host has.
The Catch is organizing a game; you have to find a willing host who can give all the joiners his IP address and the joiners must know when to join up. This can be accomplished by Phone, instant messengers, email, and Chapter websites.
My personal method comes from the Aleph One networking FAQ. In AIMS, go to File--> "Go to chat . . . " and type in "aleph one." You should find a hand ful of people who will be willing to let you join in.
If anyone has more information or questions, feel free to add to this thread. And if anyone is interested in playing Marathon MP, also feel free to add to this thread (i apoligize if this is more appropriate in the Classifieds), share your chapter that may have DB's devoted to Marathon MP, and in generally, throw yourself out there to be PM'ed and IM'ed for some matches.
You won't regret it!

Very well said Recon. I am a vidmaster, and have mastered the Marathon trilogy many many times. Playing through the Marathon trilogy on ANY setting teachs a gamer how to CONSERVE AMMO, dodge just about anything without any fancy double-tap-right-arrow dodging technique, and appreciate a long good storyline at the same time. It is my suggestion that anyone who is running out of ammo and whatnot go back and play the first few levels over and over, practicing making every single bullet count. Especially with pistols, since they're the most accurate and should never, ever be wasted. The MA-75 and shotguns should always always always be used at close range since they're so inaccurate, but pack one HELL of a punch. Also just a hint... I made it through the game multiple times never ever using the flamethrower. Personally I just don't like the weapon, it's sloppy unless you've got 20 Pfhor right at your toes or you need to break through 20 Pfhor. But the main thing with this is ammo conservation and accuracy. Strategize. Be able to dodge Compiler and Pfhor shots - the ones that move straight, anyway. The purple Compilers... you have to run a lot to avoid their seeking shots to you, so most of the time just grin and pump as many shots from your fusion pistol as you can before they get the chance to let out one of their seeking energy missiles. All that aside... flip every switch you see, and keep your eyes PEELED for them. If the terminal doesn't say "kill everything", don't waste time doing so, especially in later missions with bigger badder Pfhor. Oh yeah, and watch for those crazy-talking simulacrums... Read up on General Strategies if you need more help. This games takes a LOT of patience and ability.

Say, is there any way to invert the mouse? Using OSX, that is. I remember I had to use OS9 and InputSprocket to do that. So?
-
That's pretty hard to do when I can't even set my mouse SENSITIVITY!!
Posted by: SilentHunter ...P.S. You havent played this game until you play it on Total Carnage. My average life expectancy while playing at that difficulty is 10 seconds. :P
You're taking the first steps towards Vidmaster'y. Good luck SilentHunter! For those forum-goers and Bungie fans that are new to Marathon, there is a class of player, undreampt of in these days of cheat codes and god modes. They are reverently referred to as the "Vidmaster". It's a long tradition and a feat that not many can attain, if you don't understand, visit the Vidmasters Page or to just be amazed at what it takes to become a Vidmaster, check out the rulez. Some highlights of what it takes to Vid Marathon (taken shamelessly from the Vidmaster page); • Rule #1 Command-Option Begin New Game - Choose a level and start out with only one pistol, 3 rounds of ammo, and 1X shields. • Rule #2 Total Carnage Difficulty Level - Is it necessary to mention this? Don't be fooled by Spazeroids. • Rule #3 Punch All Switches. - A new rule introduced with Marathon2. You can be forgiven in Marathon for not doing this but not in Marathon2 and Marathon Infinity. • Rule #4 Never Shoot Where You Can Use Grenades! • Rule #5 Never Use The Caps Lock As A 'Run' Key. Or set AlephOne to "Always Run". - Ha! Who would do such a thing? Spazeroids for one! • Rule #6 Never, Ever, Leave A Single Bob Alive. • Rule #7 Just Vid It - With Style! Anyone who says that "Halo is TOO easy, even on Legendary..." is someone who could and should consider loading up AlephOne, and following the rules above. They should keep in mind the things that clearly mark the Spazeroid. Behold, the Vidmaster Don'ts.... • Don't #1 Hide Behind Doors - Don't be a spazeroid and constantly hide behind doors. It's a wussie technique. Dive into the mêlée. Endure. Vid It With Style! • Don't #2 Constantly Hug The Recharger - Yeah you know who you are! You get a nick so you run back to recharge your shields
. Walk the wire. Live dangerously. Vid It With Style! • Don't #3 Constantly Run Back To A Defensive Spot - You find a nice cushy spot to defend from so you keep going back. Wuss! Move forward, sieze the initiative, strike hard. Vid It With Style! Now, I by no means claim to have Vid'ed anything. My skills were meager when I (as a 30 year old) first played Marathon almost 10 years ago. Nope, my neurons and nerve fibers didn't twitch fast enough for Vidmastery. But lest you doubt that it can be (and was) done. The Vidmasters have recorded game files of themselves "Vidding with Style!". Oh, you didn't know that Marathon recorded games? What DID you think those "film" buttons on the right-side opening screen were for? Pretty amazing for an old Mac game, eh? Yep, it sure does record and it sure did. You'll need Stuffit to decompress the .sit film files of the classic Vidmasters, but I'm almost positive that AlephOne will play old recorded Marathon films. We've got a whole new potential crop of Vidmasters out there. Especially by the amount of Halo bragging going on. I'm wondering how they would do on a 10 year old game? I'm wondering if they can show up the old masters? I'm wondering if I should warn bungie.org that I've opened up this can-of-worms? Nah, the files are small and Louis was upset about hundreds of people trying to DL hundred MB files... It should be ok. [Edited on 7/4/2004 2:55:24 PM] -
Hehehe, (highlight the rest, ONLY if you dont mind spoilers) It took me forever (and 9 deaths) to find out that you have to use that trap to get up on the ledge.
Posted by: SilentHunter It's impossible. It can't be done. How the hell are you supposed to beat the Durandal level? After going through the 2nd teleporter, I find, that I'm ambush situation. Aliens on both sides of me. Big Behemoths charging at me. I'm in a hallway with no possible way to move, except right into the lot of them. I take 2 of those huge things out with my assault rifle/grenade launcher. Take down 20 more with the rest of my AR ammo. I pull out my two pistols. Drop about 30 more with those. At this point, I have no life left. I think it's clear. I walk down the hall...boom, one of the bastards hits me in the back and I die...[/rant]
I feel your pain SilentHunter. I just took a break from playing some Marathon where I'm still early on in the Cool Fusion level and I open a door only to be ambushed by tons of enemies coming at me from every direction. I'm in a constant run trying to dodge the different projectials that are coming to end my life. I fire at the nearest target and unload another clip of pistol ammo on the enemies shooting at me from above. Sudden I get flinged across the room by invisible floating baddies. I am constantly bouncing from place to place trying to take down all of the enemies. I hear the clicking sound of my AR which is now out of ammo, so I take out my pistol and finally finish off the rest of enemies in the room. Happy that I had defeated that room I move along onto a platform which looks like an elevator platform. Well...aparently it wasn't an elevator platform. It was a booby-trap. The trap tosses me up into the air suddenly and I am killed on impact with the ceiling. Angry and frustrated I quit the game and take a break. But I'll be back...and next time I won't die!

Uhhh, this is about the music files... Is there any way to just get ONE single file, that plays while I'm playing, instead of that huge 50mb file?
Posted by: Dill X I'm the level called "Drunniol" where you have to kill all of the enemies. I have a problem though. I've killed all of the things I could find, but then when I go back to the terminal it says I haven't killed everything yet. I then move to the end of that massive room that you are first shown at the beginning of the level and go through the door and I believe I turn left. On each end there are elevators. One elevator is close to that weapons locker are entitled I believe the "Fun House" or the "Fun Room." The problem is though, the elevator wont move at all! I've tried all of the switches and nothing seems to make it work. I found this strange because the elevator on the other end of the room will begin to work with the flick of a switch, but the other one won't work. I've been trying for a while and now I really need some help! what files are being replaced?
-
I'll try.
-
Don't use software rendering in fullscreen.
-
In my quest for the Marathon I have encountered another problem--any time I make the game full-screen as soon as it gets to the main screen it shuts off.
-
When I try to drag the files from folder to folder it tries to replace one's with the same name. I ran into a similar problem with the other thread and no one would help me. I really hope someone does this time. I'm going to change the name of the files so they won't replace each other. PLEASE HELP.
-
It seems odd that you would put everything in the M1A1 folder then click on the alephone folder.
-
I just beat marathon yesterday! Can't wait to get the second one!
-
If only you could pattern-buffer your girlfriend so when she leaves you, just load a new one. ahh the bob launcher, I love forge and anvil. [Edited on 7/3/2004 4:31:24 PM]

Theres even an explanation for how it saves!
-
Pattern Buffers! Hah! Coolest name for a save-game feature ever! Or at least, it certainly beats Tomb Raider's Save Game Crystals.
-
hey, is marathon LAN only?
-
Lol, I just met one of these things and it wasn't shooting the guy in front of him, it looks like they are talking to each other! It just looks so funny and weird... http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v255/IWTPH2/freind.jpg

I finally got by that crusher room (after dieing 7 times). I'm on the 6th level, now...I saw one of those huge beast things, and I was like...Holy -blam!-...It killed me, and I restared in the previous level...stupid me for not finding a pattern buffer...I mashed the keyboard, and left the room.
-
Heh, that always sucks. I like the challenge that this game brings. What's multiplayer like?
-
Lol, I hate that crusher room. I eventualy got through though, I just had to keep trying things and looking at stuff. I'm currently stuck on the first level of Reprisal. I think it's because I leave the previous level with dangerously low health... [Edited on 7/3/2004 8:28:17 AM]
