Hand grenades, stick grenades[not plasma grenades],etc i mean any grenade that man kind has ever created are frag grenades frag is short for fragmentation which means metal going 1000 mph is flying every where i mean if a hand grenade just blew up it wouldnt hurt you.

the canister grenades consist of smoke and incendiary not fragmentation. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/grenade.htm those ar what are used by the u.s. military all except the m61 it was phased out OMG LOOK AT THAT THE ACTUAL ARMY GUY IN HERE KNOWS WHAT THE HELL HE'S TALKING ABOUT. And I think you need to learn to spell SPECIAL not speacle, you did it in two different post so don't say it was a typo [Edited on 6/15/2005]

im talking aobut the canister version its one that speacle forces and several seal teeams use. military usees mainly uses the m67. the canister version is not widley used though it does exist.

the HE grenade is the M67 frag grenade it's shaped like a baseball and is olive drab green with a yellow solid band around the center of it with the model number written on it. I was an ammunition specialist in the army for 6 years it was my job to know everything about munitions from the 5.56 mm m-16 rounds to the hellfire missles on the apache's. I think I should know a lil about the subject. It's called a frag grenade because when it explodes it sends out fragmented shrapnel and it is a HAND grenade because it is thrown with your hand.
Posted by: UNIBOMBER X Hand grenades, stick grenades[not plasma grenades],etc i mean any grenade that man kind has ever created are frag grenades frag is short for fragmentation which means metal going 1000 mph is flying every where i mean if a hand grenade just blew up it wouldnt hurt you.
one speacle version of a hand grenade is the HE grenade it is a high explosive grenade that uses a split second of intense heat and the force of the explosion to damage the enemy. frag grenades are made with pockets in them so when they explode the explosion is more focused in small areas all over the grenade there fore focusing more energy on say the ground or a hog or a wall wich in turn becuase of the focus force blows loose small fragments of the surrounding structure and sends them flying , hence the frag grenade.

yea i noticed that after i posted it. sorry bout that. i just figured someone who has nothing else to do might read it.

the grenade launcher category is a whole other class of grenades there yayfish they "can not" be thrown by hand they are activated when fired from the launcher much like a hand grenade when you pull the pin. otherwise you would blow your self apart running around with them slamming into stuff in your bandolier. yea sorry about that. so theres fragmentation white phosphorous (incendiary) smoke flashbang teargas stick plasma any others not on the list?

Who you calling a frag?

First I'd like to say I believe that unibomber is saying that if a hand grenade blew up and there was no shrapnel "fragments" no one would get hurt hence whyit is called a frag grenade. One of the other posts said that there were two types of fragmentation grenades wrong! The U.S. Military uses one type of frag grenade it is the M67 fragmentation grenade and there is no difference in the amount of shrapnel each one produces upon detonation. That is why when soldiers learn about throwing grenades they are taught to throw and duck for cover until after the explosion. the only difference between offensive use of a grenade and defensive use is whether or not your doing the defending of and area with advancing enemy forces or if you are attacking a fixed location by throwing grenades in before you enter to reduce the number of combatants you engage. For all the people saying that there are more than one type of grenade out there they are absolutly right but they left out one of my favorites the CS grenade wich releases that wonderful tear gas all soldiers get to experience in basic trainings gas chamber. For the record the white phosphoros grenade is a member of the incendiary grenade family. There are two types of fragmentation grenades: 1. Fragmentation grenades that are being used as defensive weapons, because they contain shrapnel that's been put around the explosive that is placed in the center. and 2. Fragmentation grenades that don't contain shrapnel, and those are being used as offensive weapons. They are made with the idea of minimizing the amount of shrapnel flying through the air by making the grenade that way that it splits in a few pieces. There's still the danger of getting hit by one of those pieces, but the chance is lower then with a defensive fragmentation grenade. Why do they made them like that? Because else the attackers would be killed by their own grenades. Would you be hit by shrapnel from your own grenade? The offensive grenades explode and hopefully stun the defenders for a moment, so you can finish them off. Just like a flashbang does. Hopefully this explains a lot. [Edited on 6/15/2005]

Why are debating the meaning of "fragmentation." And just to let you know, there are smoke grenades, flashbang grenades, white phosphorus grenades, and so on. There are many types of grenade, and frag is just one.
-
i think he means that a hand grenade wouldnt hurt Master Chief. it may not, but what are you trying to prove. frag is short for fragmentation, meaning shrapnel goes flying, but what does that have to do with a hand grenade not hurting the chief?
-
u said if a hand gernade blew up it wouldnt hurt u when my friend got his arm blown off by a faulty US hand gernade...now i didnt feel it but im going to assume that getting ur arm blown off hurt a little bit

Punctuation saves. Anyway, you answered your own question. Why are they called frag grenades? Frag is short for Fragmentation. Looks like you got this Forum thing down pat! I Applaude You

yea but these grenades are designed specifically to fragment. there are some not supposed to do that like, white phosphorous (willie pete) grenades which are designed to combust and be firey and stuff. and flashbang grenades just create a flash and a loud bang and is designed to stun your enemies. smoke grenades are designed to release smoke.
