No military trains you to hold a knife backwards. There's a reason you called it BACKWARDS.

It's called an ice pick grip, useful for powerful stabs at the cost of reach and dexterity. From a knife fighting perspective it's terrible, but if you need to cut through something tough it might do the trick.

Actually if you have 2 knives one is held backwards for blocking and grappling. Also used like this for concealing the weapon.
