what was the covenant looking for in new mombasa(long read)
Ok, here's the deal, on Harvest the Covenant found artifacts that led them to the Forerunner fleet in Halo Wars, and the location of the 'Reclaimers' on Reach.
The Covenant then went to Reach and found the Locations of Halo 04, and the location of Iris(aka the portal)
they immediately went to Halo 04 as they knew that this was a religious symbol to them. Start: events of Halo: CE
After CE the covenant choose to go to the Iris in an attempt to further their quest for ascension. Regret, being an impulsive prophet decided to go to the Iris to continue the great Journey before the rest of the prophets could. He ran headlong into the largest human force the covenant had ever seen.
Regret and the Elites presumably found the location of Delta Halo, as well as the Iris, however as they had come unprepared for massive combat Regret was forced to withdraw his one remaining cruiser and all forces and make the insane in atmosphere jump to Delta Halo.
Truth and Mercy decided that the Iris was the larger concern as they learned of its ability to access the ark. However, they needed to deal with Regret's incompetence and near betrayal, so they sent their fleet of Brutes to Earth and took High Charity and a handful of Cruisers to Delta Halo.
The Chief killed Regret, but Truth believed that Truth had killed Regret in punishment for the betrayal, however he blamed the Chief for it as reasoning to oust the Elites from power.
The Flood had taken control of Delta Halo and High Charity killing Mercy, so with the death of Tartarus TTruth fled back to Earth to travel through the Iris to the Ark, The Flood Followed with ever possible living flood form to stop Truth fearing that they would kill the flood.
All forces from the flood, Truth and the entire Covenant Fleet and the fleet of elites traveled through the Iris to the Ark.
Here the Elites Completely destroyed the Covenant Fleet, Leaving the Flood and Truth stranded on the Ark. Truth was left with no way to escape, and decided to activate the Ark immediately. Here the Arbiter killed Truth and he and the Chief Then activated the new Halo 04 to destroy all life on the ark to stop and strand the Flood on at the ark, with no food, effectively killing them all.
There. all done.
What are they searching for? well it's not Delta Halo, they already found that by the point of ODST, so what then? The portal to the Ark.

What else could have been so important to them that wasn't something that what they believed could take them on the "Great Journey"? Nothing!

Also ODST will most likely explain why they went to New Mombosa.[/quote]Actually if you check out the beginning of Halo: The Flood, there was a Covenant scouting fleet there before the PoA, who believed tha the PoA had followed them there, so there were two Fleets at Halo, High Charity's forward scout fleet, and Thel 'Vadamee's. This Fleet was ordered by its Prophet not to fire on the PoA, so it would have taken damage from Thel 'Vadamee's. [Edited on 07.02.2009 11:20 AM PDT]

Wow....it's funny how bad your info is OP. The covenant went to Earth to uncover the Forerunner portal installation that was buried underneath New Mombassa. That is why Truth (with the chief in secret) went on the Keyship to Earth. The flood probably used Brain forms (there is one on Halo 1 that absorbs Keys) to figure out from High Charity where Truth went. They followed soon after Truth activated the portal. I would explain the whole thing, but im lazy, and my freakin mouth is numb after being to the dentist.

Also ODST will most likely explain why they went to New Mombosa.[/quote] actually cortana didn't lead them there. read the books the covenant found the info in a data transmission from their troops on reach. this is the data transmission that Cortana pulled the coordinates for their jump from, but the covenant found the location of Halo 04 on the artifact on reach

Yeah, as detailed in the Graphic Novel: Second Sunrise Over New Mombasa, the Covenant are indeed looking for the Portal Installation.
