Alright, so since my brain hurts from all of the idiots who don't seem to understand the difference between DPS and Damage, I'm here to give you a simple math lesson. Let's keep this basic. I'm going to use the numbers that everyone has been throwing around lately. Most people are saying that Spindle deals around 72k unbuffed and that Sleeper deals around 132k unbuffed on Golgoroth. I'm gonna adjust those to 75k and 150k for simplicity and just say that Sleeper does double the amount of damage as Spindle (WHICH IS NOT TRUE BY THE WAY).
So in one Gaze on Golgoroth, I can drain all 18 shots of my Spindle. In the same amount of time, I imagine you could get off maybe 4-5 shots of the Sleeper. I haven't tested this but based on charge time and reload, that's my estimate. However, I'm going to be super nice and say that you get off all 7 shots, just to show you how absurd it is that people defend this weapon.
75k x 18 shots = 1.35mil damage. Divide that by the 15 seconds of the gaze, and you get 90k DPS
150k x 7 shots = 1.05mil damage. Divide that by the 15 seconds of the gaze, and you get 70k DPS
Not only does the Sleeper deal less DPS in a single gaze, it deals less overall damage. It also cannot be restocked as easily from the adds that spawn in between DPS phases. So stop defending the weapon already. It sucks, get over it!
EDIT: So since I'm tired of seeing the same responses, I'll address them here.
The "stationary target" argument: The fastest moving boss in the game is most likely the SABER shank boss, possibly the red shield-brother. If you can't hit either of these bosses non-stop with crits, there's an issue with your individual skill, not with any of the weapons. However, the SS damage is still dependent upon crit, just like almost every other weapon in the game besides rockets. So if you're missing crits with your spindle, you're probably missing crits with your sleeper, as well.
The "situational" argument: In any given situation in the entire game, sleeper is nowhere near the ideal weapon. The ricochet is a complete joke, so unless all of the enemies are completely lined up, you'll only be hitting one or two with any given shot. Therefore, any situation with a lot of adds, a rocket launcher will still prove more effective than the sleeper. Why spend 5 shots to kill 7 adds when you can shoot 1 rocket to kill 7 adds? Does sleeper deal more damage than a rocket launcher? Yes. However, a rocket with max blast radius such as the raid launcher will take out a group of adds much more efficiently. As far as single-target non-crit damage, many have already stated that the swords are more well-suited for that type of situation.
The "burst-damage" argument: Seriously? Just look at the math again if you don't understand why this argument makes absolutely 0 sense. Dealing higher damage, but taking LONGER to do so still means you're dealing less overall damage. That's why Damage PER SECOND is the end-all be-all decider for how efficient a weapon is. It takes in both the variable of damage and of how fast you can deal that damage.
The "I'll use what I want" argument: ......I actually agree with this one. I never said anywhere in my post that people shouldn't use this weapon. If you want to use it, by all means, please do so. This post isn't about you. This post is about the people who are spouting nonsense and saying that the Sleeper is a high-tier end-game weapon that rivals the ghorn, the spindle, the ToM....and that's just not true at all. It's a rail-gun, though, and rail-guns are cool as shit, so yes please, use the weapon and look cool. Just don't sit there and try to say it's amazing because it just isn't.
EDIT 2: Again, for the sake of having to repeat myself, I'll tackle another few "arguments" if they can even be called that. I have to say, it's honestly sad and pathetic the crap that people are trying to come up with to defend this weapon. The more arguments I debunk, the more insane and illogical the new arguments become. But nonetheless, I'll address them.
The "swap weapons" argument: People are really reaching for straws on this one. So...I really thought my explanation of DPS was dumbed-down enough for even the most basic gamer, but apparently I overestimated the audience on this one. I'll try to put it in even simpler terms. When you have a weapon that deals maximum DPS, literally every second that you are not firing that weapon, specifically, you are losing DPS compared to the people who are using that weapon. That means that starting off with a sniper that is less DPS than the spindle, and then switching to a heavy that is ALSO less DPS than the spindle (just typing this, it sounds so absurd that anyone could even think that this would work lol), you are obviously going to deal MUCH less DPS than if you were just using the Spindle to begin with. Again, I repeat, for EVERY SINGLE SECOND that you are not firing the highest-possible DPS weapon, you are LOSING DPS. Not sure how much simpler of an explanation I can give.
The "Well, Sleeper is 290" argument:......Sigh. So, for those who don't know, the Sleeper can be upgraded just like every other legendary and exotic. Mine is currently 305. Now, since I know someone is going to say "BUT WAIT!!! IT'S NOT 310!!!", my Spindle set-up and my Sleeper set-up both situate my character at 308 Light, meaning there is no difference between the Sleeper being 305 compared to 310 on my character. Damage is calculated based on CHARACTER Light level, not individual weapon Light level. And to put this even further into perspective, when I went to test out a potential PvP weapon for myself on the Dreadnaught, the weapon was 293 Light. Swapping a 306 heavy for a 293 heavy only dropped my Light level from 308 to 307, so don't be so dramatic when speaking about varying light levels on a weapon.
The "Invalid because one is a heavy and one is a sniper": The value of an exotic is something that can, and should, be compared to that of every other exotic, since only one single exotic weapon can be equipped at a time. If that doesn't validate the argument, well, then you're just choosing to ignore logic and reasoning completely and you can't be helped. However, I already discussed the fact that rockets are still the better option when dealing with a pack of mobs since the AoE damage can kill them much faster than firing Sleeper shots individually at them, and obviously I've already proven that a sniper is more effective on a single-target mob.

I agree with OP. Been having this discussion with a few people. Even barring the Black Spindle, most HI Impact snipers are just better DPS in the raid. Honestly it's always been that way when precision damage is a factor and you take Ghorn away. That being said the SS is a boat load of fun. It looks good and it's satisfying to see those crazy 200k plus numbers pop up during golgoroth and shadow shot+WoL. DPS checks aren't so strict in this game that you need an optimal damage set up. It just helps tremendously, not that OP disagrees with this.

1 ReplyGeez, you sure do care about this an awful lot. I don't even care about my mother enough to write that much about her
-
But wait those people that use simulant also use a sniper so you forgot to factor that

2 RepliesEdited by Silvercrys: 10/12/2015 5:09:42 PMSwapping weapons is actually a really good argument, because it's faster than reloading. If we assume a 300 Eirene RR4 and Sleeper Simulant vs just a 300 Spindle, and make some assumptions about rate of fire and reload speed... We can select any number for the damage we want because changing the base numbers won't affect the relationship between the strategies, just how big the difference is. Assumptions: All weapons deal crit damage only Reload speed of Eirene RR4 ~1.5 seconds Reload speed of Sleeper Simulant ~2 seconds Reload speed of Black Spindle ~2 seconds Sniper damage on crit 150 Sleeper damage on crit 300 Sniper fire rate 1 per second Sleeper fire rate 1.5 seconds Animation canceling reduces reload time by .2 seconds Black Spindle only for 15 seconds:
150 damage per second for 15 seconds = 2250 damage
Eirene RR4 only for 15 seconds:
150 dps for 4 seconds, reload 1.5 seconds x3 (time ends during 3rd reload) = 1800 damage
Sleeper Simulant only for 15 seconds:
200 dps for 4.5 seconds, reload 2 seconds x2, +300 damage (time ends and out of ammo) = 2100 damage
Sleeper Simulant + Eirene RR4:
200 dps for 4.5 seconds + (150 dps for 4 seconds, reload 1.5 seconds) x2 (time ends during seconds reload) = 900+1200 = 2100 damage
Sleeper / Eirene RR4 with reload canceling:
200 dps for 4.5 seconds, reload 1.8 seconds, 150 dps for 4 seconds, reload 1.3 seconds, 200 dps for 3 seconds (time ends .1 seconds before sixth Sleeper shot) = 1500+600 = 2100 Of course, it does 2400 if you can get that extra tenth of a second.
TL;DR (or rather, in summary): If you accept my assumptions, greatest sustained damage per second is Sleeper + Eirene RR4 if you cancel reload animations and have 15.1 seconds instead of 15 exactly. I haven't timed animation canceling myself so I estimated. If it is faster than .2 seconds better at least one way (probably on the Sniper if someone wants to test), then it is definitively better damage than Spindle alone and can sustain fire for longer (Spindle is out of ammo after 15 seconds, Sleeper has 1 shot left and Eirene has 11 remaining at 15 carry capacity). It will greatly surpass Spindle only damage if you miss even a single shot on Spindle (ally walks in front of you, someone drops the aura, enemy jumps in front of you, you suck at sniping, etc). In addition, non-crits from Spindle deal a much larger proportion of damage because of the lower crit multiplier. Perhaps later I will do a full sustained damage count by comparing damage of each weapon on Ultras at as close to 300 attack as I can get, then assuming 30 seconds of LMG + Spindle vs Sleeper + Eirene RR4. The real TL;DR: Swapping between Eirene RR4 and Sleeper Simulant deals more damage and sustains fire for longer if you ever miss a shot on Spindle.

I like this guy. My thoughts xactly. Gimmick gun

1 ReplyIt doesn't suck you sensationalist assclown. It just isn't as efficient as the BS. By your rationale every gun but the BS sucks? Stay in school moron.
-
The sleeper simulant looks under whelming because of sword, but it sure is a fun weapon to use
-
1 ReplyOh and, your calculations are wrong, its doesnt even do that much damage against golgoroth. Its around 10k more lol which is clearly a cao because hardmode would be easymode.
-
The SS needs to be reworked. For starters, it really needs more ammo. 7 in total is what hurts it the most. As well, it does need a faster charge rate, or at least Accelerated Coils as an option.
-
1 Reply3 sleeper shots then 6/7 1000 yd stare shots (I don't have black spindle) at raid bosses, still does pretty good damage output.
-
I don't give a shit whether it sucks or not, its fun to use :D
-
2 RepliesI don't care about DPS on a weapon like the Sleeper Simulant, I care about DPS. You're probably really confused right now so I'll explain. The first DPS I mentioned stands for damage per second, whereas the second DPS stands for damage per shot. I don't even need to do a test to find out that the Sleeper Simulant does way more damage per shot than a lot of other heavy weapons.
-
2 RepliesBut if you use sleeper with the raid sniper, you will do more DPS than with spindle and a heavy machine gun/rocket.
-
1 ReplyWhy not use 1000 yard stare and sleeper? Sleeper does about 2x or more damage than a rocket launcher... So by your example if you used the spindle...yeah you can maybe get more damage...but then you would have to rock a much less powerful heavy counteracting the spindle... Your best setup would be a good sniper and sleeper.... With this I put over 4.5 mill damage on gogoroth, 3 rounds with 3 bubbles used.
-
1 ReplyWooooow, its not a dps weapon for that kind of boss
-
Screw your maths! It's a fun weapon and I like it!
jk nice job tho
-
I agree with you, but no way am I gonna black spindle the big moving shank with tons of shank adds. That's a situation where I could get off my sleeper shots throughout the fight. Black spindle in that fight is a waste of an exotic slot as I could just use 1000 yard stare or stillpiercer (if a Hunter) On golgorath Spindle is the best But the sleeper has its uses.
-
1 ReplySo you believe that after testing in one specific fight, and assuming everyone in the game had black spindle, that sleeper sucks? Get real kid

3 RepliesEdited by TR The Flash: 10/12/2015 9:20:16 AMStopped reading at I haven't tested this. You can't explain something and not test it... When you stop comparing Simulant to Snipers, and compare it against Rockets and MGs its incredible. You don't compare Primaries against Heavy.

The ricochets are really the only thing that might make it decent

Well, I was told that overall light level is what counts for damage. Buuuut when I'm 302 light and equip pocket infinity at 170, that drops me to around 288-291. However the amount of damage I actually did with pocket infinity is considerably lower than what a "normal" 290 does with an impact-comprable f.r. I don't think you can actually rely on light-damage-averaging specifically so we aren't running around with op yr1 weaps. I know basic math, and that doesn't quite add up. As for your points. Black spindle requires a tad more precision than the average bear is capable of. So in my direct experience, 1000yd with triple tap+ s.s. is more than adequate for most contextual encounters. Plus s.s. will shoot through the deathsingers hand and critical her head when she starts flinching. Black spindle will just hit her and and now ya gotta reload. Mostly what it boils down to is how comfortable with recoil an individual is, and what other weapons they have. I've found 1000yd+ss works fabulously for me. But that's what's really cool about the ttk weapon balancing, there are LOADS of options for each player. :)

Read the whole post and agree completely Yes it's a cool gun and a bit of fun to use, so was no land beyond, that does not mean it's useful, sure it has its moments but in the case of total dps it is outclassed
