So I'm slightly disappointed with the Sleeper Simulant... Here's why. Please note this is my personal opinion so don't go off on me if something appears to be "wrong"
This isn't not of its final perk (activate IKELOS) or anything along those lines. I understand they wanted to avoid the possibility of another jelly horn in Year 2 of Destiny.
Anyways, the beef that I have with the Sleeper Simulant isn't in the final presentation but in its delivery. This is a quote from the Game Informer article that covered the exotic a few months back; "After players bring these pieces back to Banshee-44 (the Tower's gunsmith), the ancient artifacts trigger a memory in the ancient Exo gunsmith, and he will invite players on an odyssey to repair and reactivate one of the Taken King's most striking exotics." Thing is, whatever this odyssey was, I never got an invite for it from Banshee. During the entirety of this convoluted "quest" never did it feel like this grand adventure. It was simply collect some items, wait for a certain day, run these missions/strikes and here's your grand prize. There was zero story behind this "quest line". I was looking forward to getting some more insight into Rasputin, the Golden Age, and heck maybe even some other the other Warminds. But, alas, nothing. No dialogue in any of the missions except for some favor text on the DVALIN fusion rifles you have to collect.
The whole "timed release" is another thing that bothers me. Sure, Black Spindle was is in the same boat. It wasn't until a daily heroic that a certain portion of the mission was available, along with a few other pre-requisites. But, the difference is that we never knew about it. Once it was found, it was a rather nice surprise and a challenge to get as well. It was a trophy. A symbol that showed that you took on the challenge and you came out on top. SS was none of those things. I feel as though I haven't actually earned the Year 2 equivalent of Gjallarhorn.
Note: There are redeeming qualities for SS that I did like but more on those later. I was always under the assumption that Sleeper Simulant was somehow hidden in game, right in front of us and we simply had not found all the pieces for the puzzle. Take, for instance, the screens with actual, readable text in the S.A.B.E.R. 2 strike or the favor text across all the DVALIN fusion rifles. Those were potential clues towards getting SS. But it was a misdirection. The amount of time and effort the Destiny community had poured into making theories, discovering secrets, finding and sorting out clues is ridiculous and only to have it all undermined by a timed release. *heavy sigh* *head shake*
I did, however, enjoy some parts of getting the Sleeper Simulant. Revisiting Cayde's Stash for the Shadow Fall mission was a nice touch. To think that Cayde found a component to the SS in his days before the Vanguard is an interesting story aspect that I wish they dived into that. To have dialogue between Cayde and the Ghost discuss why we've returned, etc would add some life to the mission and give it some purpose. The curious transceiver was an interesting addition. The correlation between the order in which the knights spawned being a code was cool, but I'm still questioning on why the two even related. Whatever though! Similarly, having to do multiple objectives to complete the IKELOS core was fun. Perhaps setting a level for it next time instead of whatever difficulty you wanted. Year 2's supposed Gjallarhorn here don't make it too easy. I'ma right?
The Warsats... Don't even get me started on the Warsats... The hardest part to getting SS was waiting for the Warsats to drop. Was Rasputin finally starting to run out of them?
TL;DR:
Disappointed with most of the aspects to this quest.
- story (or lack there of)
- timed release: ewwwww!
- no epic quest (boo!)
- no utilization of in-game or external game content (RAS-2 screens, favor text, blueprint, etc.)
redeeming qualities:
- location use
- neat use of items/their mechanics

3 RepliesI liked it, sure the quest was anticlimactic but whatever. I would of liked a really cool though. Thing I like the best about it that most are bitching about is you have to aim to get gjalahorn damage with it, put the sunbreaker armor debuff melee and nightstalker shadow shot and get a critical hit and shit dies quick

I can see why people would be disappointed, but all in all I like the weapon, it's pretty cool melting people in crucible
