So, you know how sometimes you get bored and start reading the Nutrition Facts on the back of your sodas, waters, etc?
Well, apparently there is
Magnesium Sulfate, Potassium Chloride, and Salt in my Dasani Purified Water.
This is a product of the Coca-Cola Company for McDonalds, BTW.
Now, i get that they could be sneaking Salt into my water to try to make me feel as if my thirst hasn't been quenched, but what's with the Magnesium and Potassium?

Uses of Magnesium Sulfate:
Oral magnesium sulfate, or magnesium hydroxide, is commonly used as a saline laxative. Epsom salt is also available in a gel form for topical application in treating aches and pains. Indications for its use are * Replacement therapy for hypomagnesemia.[6] * Magnesium sulfate is the first-line antiarrhythmic agent for torsades de pointes in cardiac arrest under the 2005 ECC guidelines and for managing quinidine-induced arrhythmias.[7] * As a bronchodilator after beta-agonist and anticholinergic agents have been tried, e.g. in severe exacerbations of asthma.[8] Recent studies have revealed that magnesium sulfate can be nebulized to reduce the symptoms of acute asthma.[8] It is commonly administered via the intravenous route for the management of severe asthma attacks. * Users of Epsom salt in the gel form have reported significant and lasting reduction of pain associated with fibromyalgia and osteoporosis.[9] * A 2004 research study showed that both magnesium and sulfate are absorbed through the skin when bathing in 1% solution.[10] * Magnesium sulfate can be used to treat eclampsia in pregnant women.[11] * Magnesium sulfate can also delay labor in the case of premature labor, to delay preterm birth.[12] * Intravenous magnesium sulfate may be able to prevent cerebral palsy in preterm babies.[13] * Solutions of sulfate salts such as Epsom salt may be given as first aid for barium chloride poisoning. [14] * Magnesium sulfate paste has been used as an agent for dehydrating (drawing) boils, carbuncles, and abscesses.[15] * Magnesium sulfate solution has also been shown to be an effective aid in the fight against blemishes and acne when applied directly to problematic areas, usually in poultice form.[16] If combined with water and made into a cream, it can be applied to the face to remove blackheads. * Magnesium sulfate, when used through soaking, can soothe muscle pains and help improve rough patches in the skin.[17] * The body's magnesium level increases when soaking with magnesium sulfate, which is necessary for serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter that may increase feelings of relaxation and well-being.[18] * Soaking in a warm bath containing Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) can be beneficial to soothe and relieve herpes outbreak symptoms, such as itching and lesions relating to genital herpes and shingles.[19][20]
It has its uses.
Posted by: Metastasize Distilled water robs your body of certain nutrients right? Since it lacks any minerals it can rob the body of said nutrients. I remember in my Chemistry/Bacteriology class that the teacher had some triply distilled water and it etched away at the inside of the beaker it was in.
Yup. Water is a hell of a solvent, it'll clean or etch away at pretty much anything, given the right pressure, temperature and opportunity. I didn't drink triple distilled, that'd be... interesting, to say the least. I just drank the distilled water my mother had, I forget why but she's a chemist. Get berated for it afterwards. :P Distilled water on its own probably won't do anything to you so long as you get your minerals from another source. Gotta admit, I'd much prefer distilled water for my shower over this damn hard water. ¬_¬ [Edited on 06.26.2009 12:47 PM PDT]

Distilled water is very bad for you, and you need some salt to properly absorb the water. Other additives may be for taste or nutrition.

All of these are in your tap water too. They are beneficial.

Anyway, as has been said, the body requires a lot of trace salts to acquire elements in a bio-available form, especially things like sodium, zinc, iron, iodine and nitrogen (which we acquire through protein/amino acids, mostly, and it's what we go to so much effort to acquire, as it's one of the most annoying to fix.). I think it was either Evian or Volvic that had uranium on its contents. :P Mind, I can't see any benefits for having Epsom Salts in the water, it doesn't appear to be harmful, either. Probably means it's not metabolised orally by the body. (but bathing in it boosts serotonin levels, among other things.) Potassium Chloride is an important electrolyte in the body, though.
Distilled water robs your body of certain nutrients right? I guess im gonna have to look at the water bottles i drink out of a bit more.

Because "pure" water tastes "odd" to most people. Try it sometime, drink some distilled water. Minerals are added to make it taste more "normal". The amount of the minerals are no more than are in typical tap water and far less than what would come from typical spring or a "mountain stream".

Many examples of ionic sulfates are known, and many of these are highly soluble in water. Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is commonly used as a desiccant in organic synthesis due to its affinity for water. During work-up, an organic phase is saturated with magnesium sulfate until it no longer forms clumps. The hydrated solid is then removed with filtration or decantation. Other inorganic sulfate salts such as sodium sulfate and calcium sulfate may also be used in the same way. [Edited on 06.26.2009 10:57 AM PDT]

They add palatability to the water. In essence, make it "taste better". EDIT: It's not dangerous, considering the small amount in your water. [Edited on 06.26.2009 10:53 AM PDT]

Your body actually needs a lot of Magnesium in order to function but as sulfate... I'm at a loss. I know it's in a lot of fine "mineral" waters but never understood it's purpose there.
