Keep your favorite year-2 purples to the side whether or not their light level is good. Hold onto them. 1) Wear your highest light gear, whether or not its your favorite. Your current light level slightly randomly affects the light level of SOME of the dropped gear. So the better light you are, the bigger the chance of getting even higher light level gear. 2) Just about nearly empty out your inventory into your vault. Put everything else in the vault except 1-2 items per slot. 3) Keep a smartphone nearby with the Companion App nearby You'll eventually use this to move items to the 4) Start running Heroic Strikes and don't jump to Orbit in between... just let it send you to the next match. Heroic strikes include a buff that by the 2nd or 3rd strike you get a buff to increase legendary drop rates as long as you don't jump to orbit yourself. Or Courts of Oryx, but it sounds like you're not ready for that yet 5) Start collecting all of the loot 6) Immediately dispose of useless loot Those 220 greens if you already have 240's Or whatever. 7) Start wearing anything higher than what you have (to improve step 1) 8) If a slot starts to get full, move your lowest non-purple gear into the vault via the companion app to make room for more Only do this planet-side, doing it in orbit has a chance to lose loot Hence I suggest only moving the worst-stuff over 9) Keep repeating the strikes (or courts) while constantly putting on your better stuff, moving weak stuff to the vault, etc. 10) When you're finally done, return to the Tower Decide which gear you want to keep, and which you want to infuse into some nice Purple piece that you have.

First, check your quest log. Many quests offer Legendary Marks, weapons and armor as rewards. That's a good start. Play the Daily Crucible match. Win or lose, that's 15 Legendary Marks. Save enough Marks and you can buy gear from the Tower vendors. That stuff all carries a Light level of 280. At 240, you can start running the Daily Heroic mission for more Marks and at 260, the Heroic Strike playlist. That's when the gear REALLY opens up. You'll find a ton of Engrams and be at 290 or so in no time.
