A Guide To Bungie Lore

Bungie is a special company that has developed a number of unique legends and lore over its 18 years as a producer of games. These range from random phrases to a severed dog's head in a jar. I have divided this guide in 3 main sections: Bungie Lore, Bungie.net Community Lore, and Bungie Box Acronyms. Enjoy! Bungie Lore: Blam!- Bungie's code-name for Halo during development. Another name for the project was "Monkey Nuts". "Jason couldn't bring himself to tell his mother that he was working on something called 'Monkey Nuts'The name 'Blam!' stemmed from folks yelling the word in Bungie offices when they were in Chicago. Located near a busy street, the Bungie team could hear numerous near-collisions between cars outside. 'You'd hear the screech of tires and then nothing,' explain Robt McLees, 'so I'd yell 'Blam!' just so there was some sense of completion." -The Art of Halo: Creating A Virtual World. -blam!- is now used on Bungie.net to censor expletives. "Frogblast the Ventcore"- A statement with unknown meaning that originates from Marathon 2 when Alex Seropian asked the voice actor of Bob to make a random phrase for an "exploda bob". The actor, Doug Zartman, immediately responded "frog blast the vent core!" Ling Ling- A dog's head in a jar of formaldehyde which is kept at Bungie Studios. "One of the guys from the Chicago office had a roommate who was a medical student and he brought Ling Ling home as homework. He moved out and left Ling Ling behind and she's been here ever since." -Robt McLees. Bungie says that if Ling Ling's jar is ever broken, they will make a sequel to their first game, Gnop!, which will be called 'Owt Gnop!'. This is an actual, disturbing, image of Ling Ling: http://nikon.bungie.org/images/llh.jpg. Also:An Interview with Ling Ling. "Non facete nobis calcitrare vestrum perinæum"- The official motto on Bungie's coat of arms. It is written in Latin and translates to "Don't make us kick your ass". Pimps At Sea- Since 2001, each April Fools' Day, Bungie jokes that their next project will be Pimps At Sea. The player is a pimp at sea who customizes his prostitutes in a RTS game with the most complex economic system in any videogame. The Pimps At Sea movie was announced on April Fools' Day, 2007. The Shaft- A white pipe with the words "The Shaft" written on it. It has been around since early in Bungie's history. A Bungie employee is usually "Given the Shaft" when they are tasked with a difficult assignment. "There are a variety of ways one can get The Shaft. Getting rid of The Shaft, that's a different proposition." - Joseph Staten Soffish- A water absorbent fish. The history of Soffish and Bungie's obsession with it remain a mystery. Soffish is Missing! If finding please return to Bungie Studios. Do not eat! ATTENTION -This Soffish do not eat. -Not recommended for age under 3. -Put Soffish in a half-filled bottle, the water will be absorbed soon. INSTRUCTION -Put Soffish in water and watch it grow. -Soffish can easily absorb water. -Put Soffish in fish-globe or bottle as indoor decoration. -As bath-toy is also very fun. SAFETY -Real fishes might hurt human body. Soffish is 100% harmless. -Put Soffish beside real fish as indoor decoration is also fun. ATTENTION -Transparent resin might come out of the Soffish. If so, clean it with water. -Do not keep Soffish in water too long. Tijuana Mama- Bungie often refers to the Tijuana Mama, an artificially flavored pickled sausage snack. They often joke about the product by citing on the company's website that a Tijuana Mama contains "mechanically separated chicken, pork hearts, and protein concentrate" and the fact that it is "300% Hotter!" "Unfortunately, no one can be told what a Tijuana Mama is. You have to eat it for yourself." Se7en- This is Bungie's favorite number. It appears everywhere in Bungie lore. One explanation may be the original 7 members of the Bungie team. Also, see this thread for more information. Examples of 7: In the Halo series: -7 Halos in the universe. -The monitors' numbers are exponents of 7. 343 Guilty Spark is 7^3 and 2401 Penitent Tangent is 7^4. -49 achievements in the original Halo 3. (7x7) -7 Terminals in Halo 3. -In Halo 2, Ling Ling can be seen on the warning sign on the Zanzibar beach on July 7th (Bungie Day). -7 on the 7th Achievement- Gained by entering a playlist on Halo 3 with 7 experience on the 7th of the month. In Marathon: -The opening song for Marathon Durandal and Infinity was written by "The Power of Seven". -In the Xbox 360 version of Marathon Durandal, several achievements reference the number 7: - SEVEN - Given for getting seven fist kills in the game - Bob-B-Q - Given for killing 77 BoBs - Pfhor Score and Seven Years Ago Examples of 7 found in Bungie and its community: -Tru7h- a common phrase of Bungie employees ("The Tru7h. The Whole Tru7h. And Nothing but the Tru7h.") Another common phrase: "7hanks". -The Seventh Column- Bungie's official fan club and underground army, found on Bungie.net. It is represented by the Septagon symbol, which is also the old name of the Bungie.net community forum. -Bungie Day- Celebrated on July 7th of every year. In the last two years Bungie has given away some free Xbox Live content on this day (gamer pics and themes). It also incorporates easter eggs into some of the Halo games on this day (Ling Ling's Head on Zanzibar). -The Seven Steps to World Domination- Bungie has a seven step plan to world domination. Bungie and the Underground army have currently completed 6 of the 7 steps Step 1 Start independent gaming software company. Completed (May 1991) Step 2 Dominate Mac platform: Launch assault on Windows platform. Completed (November 25, 1995 with the launch of Marathon 2: Durandal, Bungie's first Windows game after dominating the Mac with Pathways into Darkness (The First 3D Texture Mapped game for the Mac) and Marathon(Mac's answer to PC's Doom) Step 3 Announce killer gaming title. Completed (Originally announced on July 21, 1999 during the Macworld Conference & Expo by Steve Jobs. Halo was released November 15, 2001.) Step 4 Acquire strangely addictive Chinese food company. Completed (From "7 Steps to World Domination" documentary from the Halo 3 Legendary Addition DVD: "Ming Choy is the one place that you can get broasted chicken, pizza, and barbecued pork fried rice, all delivered within twenty minutes" -Martin O'Donnell. "I don't think that really accelerated the process of development so much as it, sort of filled it with a lot of bathroom breaks." -Joseph Staten. ) Step 5 Recover Ling Ling's head. Completed ("Oh it's been recovered. We're trying to move on to giving it away." -Joseph Staten. ) Step 6 Stage bloody coup of new parent company. Completed (October 5, 2007 when Bungie split from Microsoft to become an independent company again.) Step 7 Take over World. Shoot enemies into sun with giant slingshot. In Progress... ("On that final day, when our enemies find themselves all standing together on a giant cargo net, on a highly sprung giant mechanism waiting to be hurled into the sun, they will look to themselves and say: 'This agenda has been posted publicly on Bungie.net for seven years and we've paid no attention; if only we'd looked.'"- Frank O'Connor) The Halo Alternate Reality Game- The Halo ARG began with I Love Bees, a marketing campaign for Halo 2. It began when a Halo 2 Trailer ended with the Xbox Logo and www.xbox.com, which quickly flashed to www.ilovebees.com. When viewers noticed the subliminal message and visited the site, they would see a bee keeping website with a corrupt homepage that had supposedly "been hacked". In the background of this website is the fake webmaster posting an FAQ which says Q: What happened to this site? A: No idea. Help me out here. (As if his site had been hacked.) As the game developed, and the release date became closer, the story of the game eventually tied into the Halo storyline. [Edited on 06.16.2009 7:11 PM PDT]

 • Woah I never knew the exact details about the ARG thing. Very good read I learned a lot from this, it also helped me realize how much I love Bungie's involvement with the community, way beyond just giving us stats and a great website.

 • I don't know if he came up with that himself and I didn't know he actually came up with the phrase himself. I always thought it was said as a clue to an easter egg that was nearby in one of the first area's of the game. You had to grenade jump to get to an area entitled "Ventcore" I believe, hence frog(jump)blast(grenade) the (to the) ventcore. But yeah, alot of the things the BOBs said ended up in Halo as well, which I always found amusing. Such as when the Grunts and Marines say that as well as the occasional "Thank God it's you!" I love Bungie humor.

 • The second part of the Halo ARG was the marketing campaign for Halo 3: Iris. It began when a member of Bungie.net named AdjutantReflex posted a thread titled "System Integrity Confirmed" with the words "This will be a good place to begin." He had gold text and showed that he had "hacked" into Bungie.net by editing someone's post, and locking the thread. He continued to post several mysterious and post over the next few days. At the same time someone on Bungie.net posted the link to a Halo 3 comic called The Cradle of Life. On the last page of the comic is a series of hidden numbers. When the numbers are put together an IP address is revealed. The IP address 206.16.223.65 revealed a site with a countdown to 1:00 AM on June 21, 2007. Another similar site 206.16.223.63 was the Society of the Ancients, which was in search of Forerunner objects left on earth. The ARG was taken to an even further level when a group of "members" of the Society of the Ancients, wearing S.O.T.A. and Forerunner symbol shirts handed out fliers directing people to their website in a demonstration in Times Square on June 15, 2007. The ARG was concluded with five severs, which were revealed one at a time, that eventually tied into the Halo 3 storyline. Bungie.net Community Lore Bungie Webmaster- The Bungie.net webmaster is man wearing a gorilla with a cowboy hat. He used to answer letters sent in by the community to the site. He was gone for two years because he had to take a "pee break". He is always drunk and is currently in a drinking contest with Yoozel. Disembodied Soul- a bot on Bungie.net that tells users when they have received a warning or a blacklist from the forums. The legend is that a Bungie employee pirated the source code to Marathon and also placed the wrong labels on an entire set of Marathon Infinity discs, prompting a flood of calls into the Bungie Help Desk. As a result the employee was sentenced to a 'fate worse than death" and he now is in charge of the Bungie Help Section. Several quotes and sayings: "You're interfering with my slow crawl toward infinity." "I don't think that means what you think it means." "I see fire and I see flames. I see evil people strung up all in chains." Halo Babies A series of cartoon drawings of Halo characters by Bungie artist Lorraine McLees. She originally started posting her halo Babies artwork on Bungie.net in 2001. The community now uses the comic as a joke, pretending that it was an actual halo spinoff TV show (similar to the Pimps at Sea joke). Lorraine even made a guide to the Halo Babies TV show episodes to enhance the joke. http://halobabies.net/ HFCS- The Bungie.net group for all forum moderators. The meaning of the group name is a mystery to the Bungie.net community. Many members joke that the name is an acronym for high Fructose Corn Syrup. Recon Number 54 says that is comes from "Heisenberg Finds Cat of Schrödinger". The title most popular thread on the HFCS is visible to everyone and changes frequently. It is usually a joke such as "Naked Pictures of Stosh". Mister Chief- Frankie's drawings of a cartoon version of Master Chief. A lot of time he would draw them over a famous piece of art. Frankie used to post Mister Chief drawings often when he was in charge of the Weekly Updates. http://www.misterchief.com/ Superintendent a user on Bungie.net named IIIIlll (iiiiLLL) with the title Superintendent. In the forums, he has dark green text. There have been 6 (possibly 7) superintendents, each with a different combination of 7 I's and L's for their name. In his posts he has said KEEP IT CLEAN. Each time he posted this he replaced one letter of this phrase with a number. When all of the alternate numbers are combined, it becomes "0714 08 1030N" which translates to 07/14/08 10:30: Microsoft's E3 08 slot. "Blame Stosh"- a common phrase on Bungie.net, usually used when a member reports a problem on the site or complains about a site function. It began when Achronos told the community to blame Stosh for a website error. "Coming Soon"- The common response by Achronos and the moderators when members ask when a new feature of the site will be added or when a project will be finished. Another common substitute for this phrase is "When it's finished." "I am dumd"- a common substitute for the word 'dumb' on Bungie.net. It began when a member posted a thread "I am dumd" and people have been making fun of it ever since. "PM Duardo/Fomans Mom" -In 2008, a rivalry began between two moderators: Foman and Duardo. It started from Duardo making Foman's mom jokes in the forums. In response to this, Foman started telling everyone on the forums to PM Duardo whenever they had questions. The phrase became similar to "blame Stosh." Duardo responded by making a group called "Fomans Mom" (July 1, 2008). The goal of the group was solely to "talk about Foman's mom and the pleasures she gives us". Foman then made a group called "PM Duardo" (July 2, 2008) whose members would spam his inbox with messages every day. This rivalry continued for a few months, but on January 6, 2009 both sides called a truce and the two groups were disbanded. "The New Hawtness"- The term used to describe a major update to the Bungie.net website on April 12, 2004. The New New Hawtness is the second major update to the site, which was on March 20, 2007. "The Screw"- Community members sometimes refer to the Septagon forum as The Screw. It began when a member asked how to show the "screw icon" (mistaken for the Septagon symbol) in the Halo lobby. Original Thread. Bungie Box Acronyms In almost every Bungie game or soundtrack, beginning with Marathon, they include an acronym that is usually a reference to Bungie lore or other games. The acronym is usually found on the bottom of the back side of the game case. Note: There is no acronym on the original Halo or Oni. Also, there are a lot of expletives in many of these acronyms. I'm not going to dodge the censor so if you want to see the actual acronyms go to http://bungie.wikia.com/wiki/Acronyms. Also visit http://bs.bungie.org/mt/mt-comments.cgi?entry_id=400 for more speculation. Foman (an admin of Bungiepedia) has given me permission to post this information. Also note: most of the quotes of Bungie employees come from the "7 Steps to World Domination" documentary in the Halo 3: Essentials DVD from Legendary Edition. [Edited on 06.17.2009 10:32 AM PDT]
