Had to boost for all of my swords just about. Only one I didn't was the last one.
Honestly the problem is they are weak in the crucible until they become their exotic counterparts.

They're not weak at all, just need to know how to use them. Blocking is your friend.

No they are weak when compared to the other heavy options. Unreliable against supers.

I blocked a FoH with my sword. It was great.
