How to level up after lvl 34 ?

Hey guys I am new to Destiny , why am I not able to level up after completing bounties ? My Hunter is level 34 now. Please let me know what am I doing wrong !! ✌

If you do not have The Taken King. You cannot level up after 34 or do anything really with the game
