How to get the "Devouring Maw" helmet?
I know you can get it from the S.A.B.E.R. strike on Earth.
But does this strike have to be part of a playlist or can you just access it via Earth? Or does it not matter?

You can do it normally without a playlist I got mine from farming the mission from earth. It's on my warlock. Same as the strike gauntlets from the new vex strike.

I've heard that it drops in any SABER strike, so you can directly select it. I can't confirm this, though.
