I can't believe I haven't seen anyone mentioning this on the forums yet, but there is such an easy way to get this part of the quest done in the shortest amount of time possible. If you are on the step where you need to collect 10 rare materials from planetary materials, then follow the steps below:
Essentially, we will be doing the "ether chest exploit" that everyone did back during house of wolves.
1. Fly in to the planet with the respective material you need to collect.
2. Search for a material that is located near the border to another area of the planet.
3. Collect the material, then quickly hop on your sparrow and ride it across the border into another area, turn back around, go back to the material, rinse and repeat!!!
4. Make it rain rare materials!!!
If you get the hang of this method, you should be get all 10 rare materials in maybe an hour.
Now, there are a few things that can screw this method up. If someone else is in the area and takes the material while you are farming it, that material will eventually disappear. Also, if your material is not close enough to the border and you take too long to cross that border, it could disappear. If someone keeps screwing up the process, just go to orbit and try again.
Example: I needed to farm spinmetal for my arc sword. I went to the cosmodrome, spawned into the steppes, and stared to look for a spinmetal that was located near the border between the steppes and the mothyards (IMPORTANT: you need the actual material, not a chest). I collected the spinmetal, pulled out my sparrow, rode across the border into the mothyards, went back to the steppes, recollected the same spinmetal, and continued this process.
If you found this helpful, you're welcome!

I've kind of found that you get a rare material per every 10% increase in your kills, at least that's how it's happening for me.

Option b: 1) get a ghost with a material detector perk. 2) sparrow your way around the world 3) grab loads of mats I never thought they were that hard to find anyway
