Elder Scrolls Online, a real MMO, just dropped a DLC too. Guess how much I'm locked out of?
I didn't buy the DLC for Elder Scrolls Online yet, and the total content that was taken away, or that I am locked out of as punishment is NOTHING. That's right, an actual real MMO did not lock me out of any vanilla content that I paid for in my original $60 purchase. I still have access to all game features, and functions that I had prior to the DLC. I am only locked out of the center of the PvP map, but that is understandable since that is the location of the Imperial City DLC. I am in no way locked out of prior PvP areas, or public dungeons, quests, or maps.
I can as well say that my weapons were not made useless either, nor do I have to regrind new weapons. Everything is as it was in game play and accessibility that is was prior, with nothing changing. If you didn't buy the DLC you still have the features and content you paid for in the vanilla game. And the amount of content you get in the initial $60 game is massive making Destiny plus all DLCs look like a start up trial demo. So later I'll be throwing $25 at Bethesda because they're not assholes that extort their player base.
The only annoyance I had was getting my skills reset. On a level 6 toon not a problem. On a level 44 toon remembering everything can be a pain in the ass.
Thank you for mentioning this. A lot of people don't seem to realise (or just don't want to acknowledge) how morally bankrupt and unethical it is for Bungievision to lock the vanilla content behind another pay wall when the customer has already paid the initial price of the original game. They've even locked or plain old wiped away most of the TDB and HoW DLC expansions. Stuff that people paid £20 to £40 for on top of the £40 for the already severely gutted upon release vanilla game.
Bungie's creative director Luke Smith himself even admits that they knew Destiny was hugely flawed on release: “When that went out the door, we were not thrilled with it.”
Destiny is now basically a game 95% of which is locked behind DLC. And in a couple of months time all the content that was locked to The Taken King will most probably be locked yet again until you buy their next piece of DLC. That is a subscription based model if I ever saw one except that it has been dishonestly peddled through without informing the customer until it is too late. I mean they changed the EULA agreement multiple times, most notably every time a new DLC dropped. They knew exactly how they wanted to screw their customers and they did it.
The question now is do we (the players/customers) allow this sort of immoral, unethical, greedy, sleight of hand scam artistry to spread throughout the industry. The future of gaming is in our own hands and we can vote with our wallets and our voices - just look at what happened with Arkham Knight's release on PC. Gamers stood up for their rights and forced the publisher to rethink some of their more shitty business practices. What Bungievision have done needs to stop before it begins because it will set a very real and very dangerous precedent in the industry if we willingly condone and allow it.
It doesn't matter if you have bought TTK or not (apart from the fact that you've fallen into Bungievision's greed trap), if we all speak out now about this and raise enough of a stink then the industry will take notice! Just as WB Games took notice and pulled PC Arkham Knight from sales until they fix it. I'm not saying Bungievision will pull back on locking 95% of Destiny's content behind TTK but I guarantee you they will take notice and will start to rethink their shitty business strategy in the future, as will the industry as a whole. If we continue to let it slide however then the future of our favourite hobby, gaming, will continue to get worse and worse for us; the players and customers, no matter the size of our wallets.

If you're looking for something more interactive this video pretty much explains the TTK situation really well in my opinion:
