Explain this to me: Oryx can talk?

We've seen Oryx. He's a large give knight with wings. No problem there. What I don't understand is how the hell does he know how to speak English?! Or Spanish or French or whatever language you happen to be playing in. Who taught him human language? All the other hive, Crota included just growl at you. I realize Variks is a fallen and he can speak human languages and even acts as an interpreter for us and the awoken. And the cabal must have some kind of advanced language because Cayde says the cabal have something like six words for attack and none for retreat in one mission. But the fallen? Thus far we've been lead to believe they are simple killing beings of darkness. Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone agree? Did I miss something or am I just overthinking things? -thanks Edit: thank you to everyone who answered, sarcastically or otherwise. Didn't actually expect so many guardians to chime in :) Edit 2: several guardian have brought up the point that the hive, or at least the high level ones, are very intelligent having built the dreadnaught and since they are capable of space travel. This is true and helps or perhaps proves the argument they have their own language, however that doesn't mean they speak or understand human languages. Others have said because Oryx is a god, duh. However is he really a god? Gods don't die and last I checked, we killed Crota, his son and at least Demi-god. I haven't finished the raid but I'm betting we kill Oryx too. The interesting theorist section of the comment section are focusing on Oryx's telepathy/ mind control abilities of multiple species as an answer. My favorite answer so far: Because space magic

    • He isnt a god The worm inside him gives him all his power Oryx himself is weaker than crota because since crota was birthed from oryx crota had partial power of the worm

    • Crota speaks english too. And secondly the term "God" doesnt necessarily mean the being can't die. It just means theyre super-high powered beings with great force.

    • If he couldn't speak English then we wouldn't be able to hear him say "No.. Gather them.. I will take..them..all." Chills.

    • I think Bungie just translated what he said to make things easier to handle. Kind of like what they did with the Covenant and their cutscenes, it was clear they weren't speaking English; they just did it so we would understand.

    • If you read the grimore (can't remember the card but there's a trending thread) it says you must go to that gods world or dimension and kill his "worm." Supposedly this so called worm feeds off the host like a parasite and in order to feed it the host has to kill in order to keep him and the worm alive. In the meantime the more you kill the more the worms hunger grows. Quite sad and weird at the same time. There's more story to this game than bungie puts out. You gotta dig for it ;)

Technically he's kind of a god. He himself isn't necessarily the source of his godhood. It's the worm inside him that he must constantly feed (through the extinction of many species throughout over 20k years). He can only be killed permanently in his throne or if he fails to continue "feeding" his worm else it will consume him. Anywhere else and he's technically immortal. If he dies anywhere but his throne he gets resurrected. He was originally a female by the name of Aurash (I believe that was the name at least). His species only had a 10 year lifespan, but through a series of events him and his sisters "aquire" these worms that make them gods and give then eternal life as long as they stick to their nature and continue to feed the worm through doing so. You can read the whole story in the grimoirs from all 50 calcified fragments. They tell the whole story of how the Hive and Oryx came to exist. It's a good, but long read. As for why he knows English, I can only assume that's because of his godhood.

        • Like Caeser in Planet of the Apes, he was their leader because he was the most advanced, he had so much knowledge, he had the ability to fluently speak before any of the other apes did. Oryx even more so, had the job and task of being a technical librarian, he had centuries of knowledge before the expansion takes place.

          • Oryx is arguably one of the most intelligent beings in the universe. If you read the Books of Sorrow from the grimoire, you'll realize he was always studying and trying to understand things. It's a pretty cool twist for our never-dying psychopathic killing machines of a guardian to go after a smart and strategic enemy

          • Didn't The Worlds Grave have basically all the information we have here on Earth? I don't think it would be that hard to learn our language. Don't think Oryx would need Rosetta Stone.

            • They have a language. If you read the grimoire you can see their origin story. I think he just, learned it. His lieutenant could talk as well.

            • Crota actually does say something in English during the mission "The wakening". I believe it was "I can not die" halfway through the mission.

              • Maybe he learns all the languages of those he "takes" He could have "taken" a human or awoken that didn't have a ghost at one point in time.
