Overkill doesn't have the rights to halo, legend of Zelda, pokemon, the movie Heat etc. But they still have masks based on them.

That is why they do it in a way that cannot be proven to be a Halo reference.... at least not proven in a court of law. Otherwise they would have copyright infringement suits brought against them. This is obviously an om-age to Halo by the creators of Halo.

It's still no. Easter eggs like that is just nods to games, they require no rights or permission of any kind if done right.

And yet they didn't use the words(or numbers) halo, john, master chief, spartan or 117. Bungie is not responsible for what people interpret from their words, despite how obvious they may be.

Bungie doesn't own the rights to Dark Souls either but there are Easter eggs referring to that game too.
