So I got my legendary sword the other day and finally got it to 280 light only to find no real guide on where to go for a couple parts of the quest as it does get a little confusing. So I'll leave this here for you guys. Hope it helps Step 1: get sword to 280 light, doing this also unlocks another sheathed perk so be sure to learn that. Then talk to shaxx Step 2: shaxx will tell you some crap about needing to fuel the blade or something but this is pretty straight forward. 50 majors, 25 guardians using the sword. The majors aren't so bad just make sure you get the kill and go camp yellows. The 3 major knights in cosmodrome is a good spot Killing guardians with the sword I recommend going in with 2 buddies and murdering them repeatedly in rumble. You will have it done in 1-2 games. Tip: you don't need the sword charged in crucible to get kills with it. Step 3: shaxx wants you to go to the asylum on dreadnaut and kill a badass knight with your sword. This is tricky and I had a hard time getting here. Basically head through the mosoleum to the founts. Inside the founts drop down the crypts and head right. You'll see a small hole in the wall. Go through there and turn left into the big room with the spiral cork thing and a huge door at the end. This door is guarded by three "warden knights." This part is easier to do with a fireteam but you can do it solo. Basically burn all 3 down until they're almost dead. Then kill them all within a few seconds. They must die around the same time or the door won't open. Once the door opens kill the mobs in the next room until the big guy with the sword comes. Then murder him with yours. Step 4: this is the longest part of the quest. Shaxx wants you to attune the sword to you while finding super rare material for it. This will vary based on the damage type you picked. I picked solar. If you picked solar like me you will have to get kills with your solar abilities while farming for these rare materials inside of helium containers. Basically old school material farm and kill stuff with your melee and nades. It takes a few hours so its super grindey. Once you get your elemental materials and ability kills done you will go to shaxx and he will tell you he had to order some stuff and it will be here on arms day. Basically you have to wait til wednesday. Sorry if I missed some steps but hope this helps. Good luck guardians :)
