They did tell everyone. It was made ridiculously clear that each account would need to purchase TTK, and in order to purchase it, each account must own the original game and the two expansions. That's why there was a Legendary Edition that gave people everything for $60. Whereas original account holders had to pay $135 for that same content. That's less than half the price.

  • That's odd, when I bought it this morning the info that I scrolled through specifically said thay all accounts on my console can access the content.

  • It says it right here: https://www.destinythegame.com/taken-king/wheretobuy In bold and all caps:
DIGITAL DOWNLOAD FOR GUARDIANS THAT OWN DESTINY AND BOTH EXPANSIONS
The keyword is own, not played. It says this before you even have the option to select which console and which retailer you buy from.

  • This is bull crap how much money so I have to pay for this game? And where the crap are the free content that bungie kept talking about? 10 years of free content my butt that's bs. I don't want to give 80$ in ONE day that's stupid. There gonna lose a lot of there player base if they keep it like that. No joke hope your happy bungie

  • No whats bull crap is that I paid $135 to have access and play all titles of this game, while people that game shared paid $0 and had the same access up until this expansion. They will now have to pay $60 for a legendary edition that gives them full ownership of their own copy of everything. They get to pay $60 while I had to pay $135? Where's the unfair treatment now?

  • If it was "ridiculously" clear, why did I not know about it? Or Bizzaro? Or any of the other hundreds of ppl you see here experiencing the same issue? Seriously? You may need a Blam!-ing dictionary to look up the word ridiculous you know it all. You really have all the answers today, huh? We'll wait for the Bungie employee brave enough not to use a user account to sow dissent.

Because you didn't read it. It's right there. https://www.destinythegame.com/taken-king/wheretobuy Click on Digital download (the $40 version of the taken king), and read the very first text in all caps and bold:
DIGITAL DOWNLOAD FOR GUARDIANS THAT OWN DESTINY AND BOTH EXPANSIONS Guardians that own Destiny and both expansions - The Dark Below and House of Wolves- will have special access to purchase a digital copy of Destiny: The Taken King, the next evolution in the Destiny universe.
Right there is says it's for people that OWN the original game and both expansions. It's right on the front page before you even get to the option to select which console and which retailer to purchase it from. If you can't see that and read that, then I don't know what to tell you. but it's right there in front of your faces. If you chose to ignore it, then that's on you, but they made it very clear

  • Ha but why do we have to buy it on all accounts where does it say this crap? And why has not ONE single bungie employee ansewsered this question? Wtf give me one GOOD reason why I have to pay 80 dollars to buy 2 of the SAME exact thing!!! What kind of drugs are you on?

  •
where does it say this crap?
Are you blind? I provided you a link and quoted what it says. It says that the digital download is for people that OWN Destiny and the two expansions. If you are a person that has been bumming the game off of someone else who bought it you need to buy the Legendary Edition for $60 which gives you your own copy of EVERYTHING where the rights are tied to your account.
Wtf give me one GOOD reason why I have to pay 80 dollars to buy 2 of the SAME exact thing!!!
The one good reason is: The developer and publisher reserve the right to charge whatever they see fit for their content. You don't have to pay $80 you have to pay $40 if you are the original account owner that bought destiny and the expansions, and you have to pay $60 if you are on an account that has not purchased Destiny. They made the rules, not me.

  • Here's a thought I OWN both of the expansions and the game! Ya I saw that link of yours. It doesn't say ANYWHERE that you have to buy it on all accounts so stop...

Nice try, but ownership is tied to the account that bought it. The account that made the purchase has a card or paypal attached to it with confirmation. If you bought different content on different accounts you're dumb. It says that the digital download edition is for "guardians that own the original game and both expansions" If you don't own all of that on one account, a different edition is for you. Most likely the legendary edition.

  • Ok but why is bungie the ONLY game doing this? Why is EVERYONE so shocked about this? Because no one else has done this before. The is garbage. You can say what you want to and I an say what I want to. It's that easy

  • The concept of DRM is not new. EA has been doing it with their software for more than a decade I believe. Publishers have been doing it with all kinds of digital media for years from books to blu rays, to CDs, to downloaded content.

  • Wagsman you are an idiot who clearly doesn't have a family where everyone shares an Xbox and you are not smart enough to understand the point of this thread.

The fact that people refuse to accept that Bungie has altered their licenses to further restrict who can use their copyrighted content is not my fault. I don't accept the hive mentality that this isnt right, because I see that Bungie has a proprietary right to their content, and they can limit the use of it however they see fit. It is their legal right as owners of the content. If that makes me an "idiot" so be it, but that isn't going to get you what you want. Furthermore, it makes you look irrational because you would rather call people names than look at the facts. The point of this thread is for that hive mentality to vent their hatred at Bungie. The only place you see this type of mentality is here. There are multiple Destiny forums that are busy discussing the new content instead of hating on a game. Why is that? Because the users of those forums were smart enough to read which copy of the game was right for them, and to buy that copy. So who is it that really isn't smart? The person that blindly clicked accept to an obviously altered EULA, and is not willing to accept responsibility for either not buying the rights to copyrighted content or buying the wrong copy outright.

  • Do you have a family or live in a house that shares an Xbox? If you did you would feel the same way. This is a greedy decision on behalf of the company that is trying to slip it in the fine print to make more money and not care about the end user. Not everyone follows the news of game developers and their fine print when in the past buying a game meant everyone can enjoy it. It's like saying if I want to play monopoly with my kids I have to buy each kid access to a $20 game x4. Do you think producer of the game would have made it very far? That is bad business and stupidity. Plus when buying games, it is Xbox policy that they can be shared on the original console otherwise they would lose countless number of people who can not afford to spend that much on games so they can enjoy it with their family. For bungie to do this is plain idiotic and anyone that believes in it, therefore you, idiotic. I am not calling you a name just describing your rational and bungie's in a word. Since you have no problem with it why don't you spend the additional $80 for my kids to play this game.
