While this was was very clearly mentioned in the update that came out the day before the launch of TTK (see link), I'm pretty sure that it wasn't brought up during any of the streams or in any of the other updates leading up to the release of TTK. In any case, I am not too fond of this decision. It completely isolates those who decided to hold off on buying TTK, and now they have nothing to do in the mean time. They can't earn marks, buy gear, or even level their character up a little. I started playing Destiny when HoW came out and I was still able to get my character to level 33 by playing Iron Banner, and could purchase non-Fallen/Hive themed gear that was introduced in TDB and HoW. So why can't I do that in TTK?
This is an issue for me because I was planning on making the jump to the Xbox One in a few months and I was going to purchase the Legendary Edition of TTK when I got it. So instead of wasting $60 on something that I am going to have to buy again later, I was going to ride it out on the 360, level up my character and earn some new gear so that I can do the Raids with my friends.
All I really want to be able to do is:
1) The ability to level up my character to level 40
2) Earn Marks (since you can do it already in Vanilla Destiny) and buy Vangaurd or Crucible gear
You can keep your subclasses, your singleplayer, your crucible, your raids, strikes, exotics, shaders, emotes, and anything else that doesn't have an impact on the way users who chose not to spend their money this week can play the game.

Yeah, one year later, I still believe that I should have been able to earn marks and level my character without the DLC.

Would you cry that you can't play new maps, story missions ect in any other game because you decide NOT to pay for it?

14 RepliesYou know what I am really hoping for? I hope they don't allow people to post on the forums unless they purchased TTK. It would fix a lot of the ongoing problems.

9 RepliesYou are the reason they have to put directions on shampoo

Why would anyone expect to get expansion content without the expansion? This is normal for gaming. Normal for any business.
-
No, you don't get that privilege. Every DLC you've purchased from the beginning of destiny has been an increase in light levels. Why should that change now?

2 RepliesCome on, guys. The game has moved on. You didn't buy, you're bound to cry. This is a completely new game and you guys are seriously expecting to still get it's content? Those of you who thought that this time would never come were just fooling yourselves. No more freebies. Plain and simple.

pay for dlc which gives you the ability to level from 34 to 40, therefore if you do not buy the dlc you will not be given the ability to get any new gear that will increase your level to 40. The solution to your problem is, if you want the new stuff buy the dlc
-
2 RepliesWhen will you people learn it's not a free to play game you have to buy the new dlc to play if you can't then you night as well play something else to you can instead of complaining about no free things being given to you.
-
If they did let you lvl you still couldn't hit 40 since they always let you get 1 lvl less than the max with the previous dlc.
-
7 RepliesThis is true. Bungie never said ANYTHING about taking away half of the game from players who didn't buy TTK. Mentioning it in an update the day before release doesn't count in my book.
-
4 RepliesDamn, sorry to see all these self-important dumbasses knocking you and your post man. I was in the same boat, I wasn't going to get TTK til the price dropped, unless it looked amazing and got good reviews from people with actual critical thinking skills. However, my girlfriends brother really wanted me to play with him so he bought me it. Anyways, yes, its definitely a shitty time to be someone who hasn't bought the Taken King, hopefully Bungie reverses their BS asap or we could ALL be sitting on a dead game way before the 10 Year mark they set for it. If you're really displeased, look into filing a complaint with the BBB, FTC or PS/Microsoft. Some people are claiming to have some luck, so can't hurt :P Hey, maybe your Legendary Edition will pay for itself, lol

3 RepliesI understand the some of this, but I do think it sucks for people bc now they can't do nigtfall..

1 ReplyActually u can do some quests for free and every time u level up you're faction u get a tkk legendary that u can dismantle for 3 marks and the vendor next to the crucible has weapons that you can use u don't need tkk for it. It just takes forever
-
12 RepliesBungie clearly stated that your level cap without the taken King would be 34. Period. End of sentence. And as for marks, oh well. What good does it do a level 34 to have legendary gear anyway? With the way things work now you can get rare gear that's better than legendary. And anything you can do as a level 34 has a light requirement of around 190 anyway. So legendary stuff isn't needed to achieve that. So here's what I have to say to you. Stop being a punk bitch and buy the taken King. People like you irritate me more than anything else in the world, you think you deserve the same perks for free that people who pay for them get. And before you get all pissy about the marks. You knew that it would be changing and that they would be required to buy gear in TTK. And if by the grace of rngsus you get a legendary from a blue then you need to fūcking cherish it.

7 RepliesEver played an mmo? Or any game? Dlc is required to do the dlc stuff. Simples
-
8 RepliesWhy's it such a shock that In order to progress you need the expansion
-
10 RepliesThey warned you it was 10 year game with expansions. Quit acting retarded as if you never knew.
-
4 RepliesYou don't need to be a higher lvl to do anything before taken king... Why would you need to level. If you can't equip the vanguard/crucible gear(need to be 40) why would you need marks?
-
Ttk is supposed to be like a Destiny 1.5. Where it is more than a Dlc but less than a full game. To those that got the game late and couldn't get legendary gear from yr1, ur SoL. Not to mention, that gear is almost useless now anyway.

It'll be there when you do make the jump. Just wait it's not a huge ordeal. When you do make the jump everyone will still be playing and running the new raid etc. Everyone acts like their life is coming to a halt because they can't make the purchase that they have known about for 3 months. I understand your circumstance is a little different than most who post this same complaint on here. But it's just a game and it'll be here when you are able to return.

2 RepliesIf I pay $40 You best bet I'm going to want to get my character to lvl 40 and watch you suffer because you want freebies. I will mute everyone who posts something like this
-
Level 40 is a part of the DLC, you can get to the max level in the HoW. But 40, is a TTK level. You can't buy the gear, because it's TTK gear. I may be mistaken, but the gear has TTK logo on them and the level is part of the DLC, just like it was raised for HOW
