Render-to-Video Public Beta

Online and open for beta business. click for full story edit by Roger: zeroth. I'm comandeering this post to answer any (good) questions that come up. Enjoy, everyone! Q: Can I upgrade from free-DLC-Pro to Beta status? A: Sorry, no. There are too many people in that situation for us to be able to do that and still keep the beta small. Q: When will videos appear on the file search? A: If you filter by "in the last day", you can use it now. Other time periods are on a nightly refresh. Q: Will files already converted into video format be downloadable by other users without charge (provided they have a Bungie Pro Subscription)? A: Yes, at least for now all Beta users can see all other users' videos. We're watching what this does to bandwidth, and we might have to adjust it. Q: Does this only work on PCs? A: The videos are WMV, and Macs can play that format with the right software Q: Can I render six 10-second films for one "minute" of points? A: No, points are used per minute or fractional minute. A 61-second clip is "2 minutes". You will see the point cost before you confirm the purchase. Q: If I delete the base film from my fileshare, will the video get deleted? A: No. Current plan is to keep videos around for a long time regardless. They can still be accessed by search or via the game they relate to. Still, save off your file when you can, since we can't keep all the videos around *forever* Q: How do I report a broken video, such as the end getting chopped off? A: Reply in this thread Q: If I like to make machinima with lots of multi-angle shots, shouldn't I just get a capture card? A: Probably, yes. Render-to-video is geared toward players who want to highlight gameplay footage that is special to them. Buying a capture card that can encode 720p (or even digital 360p) is expensive and troublesome for the infrequent capture user, and this service is an inexpensive alternative. When final pricing is announced this summer, you can decide if you really plan to produce more footage than this service will give you for the same price. Q: Why is there audio before the action starts moving? A:That's intentional, to make sure the game engine has had a chance to fully load everything. The simulation starts paused, then we start recording, then we yell, "Action!" Similarly, we have the on-screen Spartans hold their pose for an extra second at the end before we stop recording. Q: Why is it that for a few films, the thumbnail black, the film is unseekable, the length reports as 0, and the end is chopped off? A: It was a bug which I think should be fixed as of now (May 13th, 4:33 PM) for all films rendered in the future. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure the problem is gone. Q: Where's the reticule? A: How about that? The game itself doesn't display a reticule for *clips* until you leave and reenter 1st-person camera. We're showing it the same way the game does. We'll dig around and see if we can prepare a fix for the version of the game engine that runs on the Hydra. Q: Can I render other people's videos and vice versa? A: Yes, any film that's shared on bungie.net is fair game for anyone. Q: Why can't you charge by the second rather than rounding to the minute? A: Each clip, no matter how long, takes a certain amount of our machine time as overhead, loading the clip. It's about 30 seconds of wasted time per clip, So your 1-second clip costs you 60 seconds of Points and costs us 31 seconds of machine time. But your 59-second clip costs us 89 seconds of machine time and still costs you 60 seconds of Points. In the end, it comes out even. [Edited on 05.17.2009 7:57 PM PDT by sawnose]

 • While it may be that it costs you guys 31 seconds for a one second clip, it also wouldn't be a huge stretch for you guys to not be as -blam!- cheap as the cellphone companies. Would it be a huge stretch of imagination to allow us to combine videos until 59 seconds? Man see that would make sense, WHILE losing valuable jewishly "earned" money, which is exactly why you won't do that. Ur dumb.

 • Cool, but honestly, what's up with the 'pay for everything'? I understand that you only have 500GB right now... but what about the playlists? There are about 3-4 playlist games where you could play without any paid DLC. Now, this, what everyone was waiting for, costs money for every second you render. It would be 20x easier for me to get a capture card and enjoy the rest of my life without paying for my recording. You know? Not everything has to be worth money. You can still have points and have members earn them in some other type of way. With all that money you've earned by now you're supposed to be on 500TB. What's next? Recon for sale? EDIT And same goes to rendering time. With all that money you got from the DLC's you can upgrade your rendering system. C'mon Bungie, aren't you the guys that created the BEST game so far? That was sold to thousands and millions of people? That costs $50? That's being used as the main game for MLG? To which every PS3 and PC fanboy gets jealous? [Edited on 07.03.2009 7:47 AM PDT]

 • You know what would be awesome? I do. If I could use Facebook Share and actually post the video to my profile. Bungie doesn't understand the potential of ASS I can get! I can show the ladies my sweet ass TRIPLE KILL! No seriously, using Facebook Share and to be able to use an embed video on my facebook profile will make me want to be a Pro Subscriber until Halo: Olajuwon comes out. Thank you. Please :)

 • I'm a paid Bungie Pro subscriber, and have been since 2008 when I got into making wallpapers and such and needed more screenshot room. In any case, being a paid subscriber, I was very excited to hear about this beta, and decided to try it out, but I got the message "available only to Bungie Pro subscribers". What happened??? edit: nevermind, works fine now. thanks Bungie!

 • This is by far one of the greatest things Bungie has done with halo 3 and B-net. Good Job Guys This will lead to more halo videos out on the web which in the long run will lead to more fans of halo 3 and equally as important more sales of halo gear and other Bungie like things.

 • This is great, but I am wondering if, with a point system, I would be able to make a decent length Machinima because it sounds like there is an additional fee for any rendered videos. So I am wondering if Bungie has considered the Machinima creators with this new system.

 • It would be nice if your fileshare would tell you how many views you have and how many downloads to computer and downloads to counsel you've had.

 • Please, could you give us some idea how soon we can start buying Bungie Points to get more Render Minutes? We have a big offline tournament coming up this weekend. A lot of the players don't have XBL accounts. We'll be desperate to see some clips of the carnage. We can't wait a month, the frustration will kill us! Please, give us a link for buying render minutes. I'm not being greedy here and asking for hundreds of render minutes -- another 5 would be enough! :) [Edited on 06.03.2009 4:51 AM PDT]

 • I love how, when I suggested Bungie creating a service for video download or upload to youtube (back in June 2008), people posted things like "there is no way!" or "Bungie doesn't have time for that" and my personal favorite "somewhere in Bungie, a programmer is crying", well... bullocks to that. Thank you Bungie, for shutting up all the nay-sayers. I'm gonna go redeem my 5 points for a well-deserved HD rendering.

 • Wow!!!! Thank you for this feature, this is the best thing on Bungie.net! This is what we've been waiting for! Now anybody can watch videos in the File Share just by clicking "watch this video" on the item and then clicking "play" in the online player! The videos take a few seconds to render, but it only has to be done once -- then the Bungie Media Player (Silverlight) appears on the item in the File Share. I tested the new feature with one of my favourite videos from my File Share, in which I acquire a sneaky camping-style: Rendered Video example: my Killing Spree with the Gravity Hammer on Guardian. Anybody can watch the video online -- even if they're not logged in! (I chose SD quality, not HD.) I've tagged all my rendered videos as "rendered" so people can easily find videos that can be instantly played online. Enjoy!!!!! P.S. Please give me 1 more minute of rendering time, even just 1 more minute so I can do 1 more video! I'm a Bungie Pro subscriber and always have been. One video per month is killing me, I want to show this to people! I'm a Microsoft developer so my interest in this feature goes beyond gaming, this is revolutionary, a big step in the evolution of gaming and online entertainment!! • Question: When the real thing comes out, (7/7 is what I have understood from reading this) do we subscribe to Bungie PRO on 7/7, or is it just that we have Bungie PRO when it comes out?

 • so if I wanted to make a video with a whole bunch of clips from my friends and I. All the clips even if they are roughly all averaging around 15seconds would charge me per minute? Bit excessive if you ask me but I guess you have to make money. Although I still think purging all renders after a week would work sufficently in keeping your space free and allowing users to download their own videos.

 • Can we get a picture of hydra? I'm a total computer nerd and would love to see how it works on the hardware end. My guess is that it's a bunch of 360's hooked up with capture cards. Will the videos ever be rendered into h.264?

 • Well that was dissapointing.... HD capture card's aint cheap but you can use them for so much more than Halo videos, plus you could always stick it on ebay when your done.

 • I change my mind about this render to video thing. It VERY convenient when using this site. You can even render your friends clips for them. and it actually gives more to the Bungie Pro members. what will bungie cook up next? [Edited on 05.19.2009 10:29 PM PDT]

 • Could we specify whether to render things such as the timebar, status bars, and or crosshairs? Or do you do that in the movie clip "recording" process? [Edited on 05.19.2009 5:59 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Ginister Hey, please can someone PM me with what rendering is, no idea what all the fuss is about :(
Say you have an awesome clip, but you can only show it to people who have halo 3, and you can only access it through the game. Say you don't have a graphics card that allows you to put those cool videos onto your computer and upload them to a video viewing site, such as all the machinimas you've seen. This rendering ability will let you download your clip to your computer as a movie file that you can then post on the webernets, without buying a graphics card. amidoinitrite? Also, my question is at the top of the page, maybe I scratch someone's back, they scratch mine, eh???
