It's a common misconception that all we auto rifle users do is aim and hold the trigger, but there's a bit more to it.
I favor a Silimar's Wrath with Focus Fire, a perk that slows down the rate of fire while ADS for a slight increase in impact. Now, the slower rof and higher impact make ranged combat more feasible, so long as I keep myself ADS and keep my shots on target, but the second a target gets close, the slower rate of fire becomes a liability. I've got to switch to hipfire, which isn't easy if you're trying to pin down a rushing Titan or a blinking Hunter/Warlock.
I also find that just spraying wildly at range is just a waste of bullets. I'll either harass distant foes with sharp bursts, or even single shots, just to pressure them and disrupt their sniper fire/ cover my team.
Just like handcannons were misused by less skilled players, the same can be said for Autos now. Every weapon takes skill to use efficiently, but it's true that auto rifles are more forgiving than most handcannons.

i used to use a vex, but way after it was crazy. i didnt have the game back then. my first game using it in iron banner i got 38 kills, just holding the trigger and pointing at their heads. and there are autorifles plenty more stable than vex. it was easy. it was a noob gun, just like every autorifle. i had absolutely no crucible skill at the time. it took me months to get good with tlw, why? because the gun kicks like a mule, people strafe so you have to time your shots, small mag, not as much aim assist etc. Pulse rifles and autorifles just flat out give you headshots. i have them all: suros, hard light, messengers..... they are all noob weapons

Your mileage may vary, but I know that for the past few months if I was in a straight up gunfight against a handcannon user, both of us firing and not ducking into cover or "dancing", I'd be lucky to get the enemy down to half health before I was in the respawn screen. It's definitely taken some kind of skill to not just get dominated while maining Auto Rifles.
