9/2/15 Twitch Stream Review: Court of Oryx (link to stream imbeded)

Greetings fellow Guardians, So today was the final TTK Twitch reveal. Oddly it is not available in the Twitch archives to watch, however ZRSGamingHD was kind enough to put it up on YouTube for us. Link is above for anyone who wants to watch the stream. So today we had DeeJ with the audience and a fireteam of Laced Up Lauren, Urk and Ben Wommack (Poor Coz got left home today. Boooo). To start out Ben explained that the Court of Oryx is player triggered public events. Throughout questing in the Dreadnaught, Rune Items will drop, which can then be taken to the Court within the Dreadnaught to trigger public events whenever we want. As with any other PI, anyone in the area will be able to join in and help out. So before they head out they had LUL bring up one of the swords to inspect. It's a 310 solar AP named interestingly enough RAZE-LIGHTER (Obviously this was Bungie giving me a secret shout-out for the beautiful ballad I put up for them yesterday. Love you too guys.) Some of the perks include: Tempered Light: Increased armor when wielding the sword. Thrive By The Sword: Kills with the sword grant super energy Phoenix Uppercut: Use R2 to launch a Solar Light uppercut And optional choices Warrior of Light: Increased damage for your R2 attack and a last they didn't highlight, but most likely an optional armor boost. So into the Dreadnaught, not sure if we're seeing them drop in to an actual starting area or if were already somewhere within it. So it's basically a large room we're in where Taken drop in to fight. As they're slaughtering Taken (LUL is using a pretty cool looking Suros AR btw with a pretty cool new sight that actually is retracted when not sighted and pops up as just a clear oblong piece of glass when sighted.) They're telling us that we won’t discover everything at once, that there will be little threads of mystery to pull us through. They discover one called an Agonarch Rune it shows a quest challenge on it to "hunt down the hidden Taken threats. 0/7 [completed]". At the end of these quests and challenges will be chests full of loot. While they are talking there is a mini public event taking place of Cabal moving against Hive like in Skywatch. LUL has a Ghost shell on with a perk that puts a waypoint marker above a new material "Wormspore". It should also be noted there are still patrol beacons to be activated if you so desire. Now they're going to a zone called the Hall of Souls where the Court of Oryx arena is located. As the pass through they come upon a summoning ritual much like the Blades of Crota which triggers another mini encounter. They are saying that events throughout the Dreadnaught are more random in nature. It won't be like say the Cosmodrome, where the enemies are always in the same places. Sometimes enemies will be fighting in a particular spot in the Dreadnaught and sometimes there won't be any there. They are now at the Court of Oryx. The hall leading to the arena is lined with 6 statues representing enemies we'll be fighting in the Dreadnaught. When an event is not in progress, the arena is filled with a liquid-y floor that causes damage. The statues are 3 per side and this is significant because there are 3 difficulty levels to the events. To start an event a Guardian has to have a rune to offer to a statue. It's still max 3 person Fireteams obviously, but up to 9 players can be in the zone together participating. Only one Guardian starts an event at a time and afterwards a chest spawns which only they get loot from. The other participants get a chance at some rewards too, but more likely rep, mats and more runes. There are different level runes and in order to do the tier 2 event, you first have to beat the tier 1 three times to charge the rune. Not gonna lie, this seems a bit obnoxious and just a little too much grind (especially when we've leveled past tier 1 content). Each boss in the Court will have their own mechanic that needs to be figured out in order to beat them. The first boss they fight has an Arc shield initially, but it will change each time it comes up like the Cabal boss in PoE. LUL hits him 4 times with a sword and he's dead. After the fight is over and back at the statues, the person who started the encounter has a 40 second debuff before they can start another. This ensures the same person isn't constantly getting to start the events, but still seems like this would be a clusterf*ck with nine randoms all wanting to start events. Another mechanic is if the person who started an event dies, they have like 20 seconds to rejoin the fight or it ends. This is so the person in line for the chest reward can't go afk and let everyone else do all the work for them. They are starting another tier 1 event and point out that the same bosses will never come out twice in a row. The next boss fight is actually 3 wizards and they use a nice WoW mechanic and have to be killed relatively close together or they come back to life. It should also be noted that there is a 3 minute timer to complete these events. After beating the fight they're showing a "Stolen Rune" in LUL's inventory. This is to start the tier 2 event and it now has 2 charges (out of 3). We find these Stolen Runes out in the world and have to have them in our inventory prior to doing the tier 1 events. Again, like the boss mechanics of the Court, it actually seems more like what a lot of us thought we were going to get with PoE... but I'm not sure how long we'll all want to sit and run endless tier 1 events to charge our higher level runes. We'll find out 9/15 lol. On to the third tier 1 fight. This is a Hive Knight and a Taken Knight with invincible shields until they are drawn close together. The key to this fight is to kite them close together and try to burn them down as much as possible before they split up. This fight showcases a nice use for the new hunter super which binds enemies together. Once one is killed, the other loses their shield and is an easy kill. Tier 2 they're putting at just below Nightfall difficulty. So tier 2 is two sets of tier 1 bosses at once (4 minute timer). The first encounter they're in is an Ogre that can only have his shield removed by exploding Thrall and the twin Knights are back out. They burn the Ogre first and then take on the Knights again. Once again the sword heavies are about 4 hit kills once the boss shield is down. Tier 3 events require Antiquated Runes (again need to be charged with 3 tier 2 fights). These bosses they say are more like raid bosses that require specific strategies to beat and the rewards are "really, really good" They are doing another tier 2. New ability, Hunters can make everyone briefly invisible if close enough together. The first boss they're burning is a single Knight that they drop pretty quick. The other boss is a Taken Centurion that can only be damaged when all his minions are dead (there is also a Hive dropship bombarding from above). Once his minions are dead, there seems to be about 3-4 seconds to burn the boss before more adds spawn. Takes then to no time left, but they get the kill. They're not going to show tier 3. And that's about it. They give Destiny PS4s to LUL (and to previous guests too) to give away to one of her Twitch followers. Finally they let Luke come out to show a brief trailer for King's Fall which will be released on 9/18/15. The trailer really doesn't show much, but does have fine use of the Dolby Digital sound bite they play before IMAX films. So what did you all think and what questions do you have after this last reveal? My initial take is that the bosses do look more interesting (though still a little too heavily reliant on shield mechanics) and the Dreadnaught still is pretty much a mystery. Will there be invisible walls and ceilings or is it completely open to explore and filled with hidden areas to discover? I'm also curious what our motivation will be at endgame level to go back to the planets to quest and explore. The swords and Suros AR look cool and I heard from a friend of a friend of a cousin of a friend that they're already working on the sword nerfs for the baby posts guaranteed to litter the forums on release (Just don't nerf RAZE-LIGHTER okay Bungie, it has a special place in the weapon pantheon for me now. <sniff> It even kept me from saying Luke looks like a hobbit! Err, uh.. Oops. Sorry Luke...) One more Flu... Update (this is tough!) to go this week. Until then... Sols out.

  • Stream was weak. They redid the sword of crota summonings. Dreadnought was a bug empty space just like cosmodrome. It will be boring after a week or 2. Huge let down. There was nothing different.

      • This game isn't going to be Destiny DLC. Its going to be a second version of Destiny year one. What Im getting at is that this doesn't feel like a continuation. It feels like every year is going to be like playing year one all over again with less content every time.

My 2 cents: Dreadnought pretty much looks like hive moon caves. Fighting dynamics is pretty much same, run through corridors, kill shit, you're done. Nothing surprising, new boss mechanics is ok, but overall meh, once you figure it out. Logic is still dumb, if you're inside alien ship, why the hell there would be a small arena where you can trigger public events? Of course we got Prison of Elders where everyone is armed to the teeth, prison my ass) so why would I even bring up logic. Stupid of me, sorry. But story wise Destiny is still an unrecoverable pile of crap, and nothing can be done about it, train left the station long time ago. Basically TTK woul look exciting if it was year 1, but now that it's year 2, our experience kills all the excitement. I will never ever be as excited about getting a new weapon as before , I know Bungie will kill it sooner or later. They proved to us Destiny is disposable, and I don't like disposable razors.

            • Maybe they'll start trying to do proximity chat. I feel like you'd at least need to be able to communicate with the random guardians, if they jumped in with you, right?

tho evilrobobunny covered how i felt about a lot of the mechanics and what not, but my biggest disappointment is the scale of the areas. The areas are just too small. court of oryx is gonna be chaos with 9 people. should have been 3 times the size it is now. Give the sense of an actual LARGE firefight for a public event. Remember in HaloReach (I believe) when there were large vehicle battles in the distance? You couldnt get there--tho you may try to like me haha--but it was awesome. why? gave me the sense of being a part of something much greater. The scale was massive. Lets give the worlds some life....

              • Once they explained loot I was a little disappointed. Also, the number of blues that drop on stream makes me think they're trying to extend how long we're in blues.

                • Honestly with how they described this content made me want this content even less. So far these Twitch streams are making this "expansion" (it's an over priced DLC) less and less appealing.

                  • Will the Court of Oryx be left behind just like the PoE when the next DLCs hits? Meaning that it's going to be worthless to grind it heavily in the beginning, since there won't be any replay value after TTK?

While it wasn't as bad as last week's stream (tough to top that gem) ... this one still left a lot to be desired. Court of Oryx seems like a small, one-room version of PoE (Adds for the sake of Adds, a lather-rinse-repeat approach). The difference being the bosses and their relative mechanics - which I DO like, but these COULD HAVE and SHOULD HAVE been the approach to Strike bosses! The player-side mechanic for the Runes seems like they've just put a different coat of paint on the Queen's Treasure Keys ... but then added an additional mechanic that has the potential to allow for a LOT more dickery by players than PoE permits (and it can permit a fair bit as-is). Ideally, a pre-formed Fireteam (no matchmaking found here, son) would be fine to do Tier 1 and Tier 2 stuff - making sure every player has a chance at being the main 'gear getter'. But when you start mixing in multiple Fireteams, popping in at will, not likely with everyone's enjoyment in mind - it may degrade the experience pretty damn fast. And then throw in the complications of higher Tier content (I have to assume Tier 3 is simply three sets of bosses at once, following Tier 2's two sets of bosses at once 'twist') and up to 9 players ... all in that same tiny little area. Separate parties, separate interests ... and only one guaranteed 'gear getter' per round. I have to wonder if I'm being sold a roller coaster ride ticket that actually runs straight into a meat grinder. If all 9 players were on the same page, then that kind of chaos in a tiny arena might be pretty fun (for a bit) ... but right now, it seems more like further grind with the complication of potential player interference mixed in for spice. And I don't even want to think of how solo (or duo) players could be screwed around with in this situation (and you thought being kicked out of a game after beating Skolas was a low blow). Why not at least allow a Raid Team to enter the Court? Again, don't get me wrong ... I see the potential for fun here - just like actual Public Events CAN have. But the additional player-side mechanics added in here have as much (or greater) an ability to "un-fun" the experience as they do to enhance it.

I think limiting 9 to the public event might be problematic, although I have never seen more than 6 players per area in Destiny. On the flip side this mechanic is so easy for a player to troll other players by jumping in front of friendly fire or pushing the 2 Knight brothers away from each other.

                          • I did manage to watch the stream finally. I'll start with pointing out that Deej had a very unbecoming Freudian slip during the introduction and yeah, to be honest that kinda set the tone for me lol To be completely honest, I hate to say it but the whole Court thing looked... I dunno. I didn't wish I was playing, let's just say that. Maybe I'm just not seeing it at this point in time but I really can't imagine what I witnessed becoming a huge thing. Not even "a" thing. It really didn't seem to have legs -- go there and spawn some guys, fight them, level it all up so you can fight tougher guys. I dunno, can you really imagine being camped out there for hours, day after day just repeating that? I don't know if the idea of a willed public event / firefight is a sound idea. I went in with a totally open mind but just didn't feel it at all. Obviously there's more to TTK than this and maybe it's not a centerpiece but yeah... not what I was expecting at all. Hopefully there's a lot more going on and Court is just one of many new things to do in Destiny.
