Recently there has been a lot of unrest about the year two exotics. More specifically, a large vocal majority of the community seems to hate them. The problem is that most people have a different view of what the term Exotic actually means. For some its just about looking badass, for others its about having game-changing perks, and others still just want to be able to recreate a power fantasy.
For me, Exotics should either be A) a game changer, B) extremely pragmatic, or C) extremely fun to use. Every piece of exotic armor should have a perk that completely changes the way the game is played. An exotic shotgun going off should sound like God slamming his car door. There should be a machinegun that shoots flaming shurikens, An exotic sniper rifle should shoot golden dildos that explode when you hit someone in the ass.
Its not just about looking badass. If the only thing it does is look cool than its basically a waste of space that could be used for something more practical. The Alchemist's Raiment is cool to look at, but in combat it does f**k all (The design on the front isn't even a real alchemical symbol). But its not just Y2 exotics that are the problem. Bad Juju, Truth, Glasshouse, and many others were completely useless compared to stallions like Gjallarhorn, Ice Breaker, Obsidian Mind, Armamentarium and Hawkmoon. No Land Beyond was utter garbage, but at least it was utterly unique and fun to use. Some say the reason we can;t upgrade Y1 exotics is because any sane person would use those exclusively as opposed to the Y2. I'm personally not about to put on my tin foil hat and indulge that theory *cough cough* I think it's true *cough cough*.
I could keep harping on about how the "exotic dilemma" isn't a new one. I could harp like an angel with parkinson's disease, but that won't accomplish anything. In closing, i don't think exotics should necessarily be unstoppable, look cool, or even surpass Legendaries in terms of power. I think exotics should be just as strong as legendaries stat wise, but do one thing so well that if that's what you want to do then you have no choice but to equip that exotic.
So that was my rant. Before I go back onto the porch and wave my cane at youngsters, what do Exotics mean to you? What do you think they should do?

Exotic - "attractive or striking because colorful or out of the ordinary." Exotics are meant to be one-of-a-kind, unique weapons/armor that offer something you can't get anywhere else.

I think exotics should provide you with a cool ability that no other weapon has, but don't provide you with something 10x better than legendaries. Bad juju is a good example. Instant reloads and super energy is something you can't find anywhere else, it's unique and useful. But not op. It barely even changes the ttk in crucible with the damage boost. Icebreaker is another good example. Infinite ammo at the expense of not being able to pick ammo. The chaperone, while not released, is another example. It fires a single slug.

Different.

1 ReplyI think exotics are meant to be unique. They should look unique, and have unique perks. A lot of the Titan exotics are not unique because all they do is free up a perk slot. Bungie was not thinking about titans very much when they made this game

Unique
