I see this phrase a lot from the conservative crowd in the US. Work hard, earn your rewards; pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
Well, have you ever tried pulling yourself up by your bootstraps? It can't be done. You fall over. You need someone else's help in order to do it.
When you use that phrase to support your philosophy that you can make it on your own, it really means the opposite.

Never in my life have I heard this phrase.

16 RepliesIf you have a cruddy job, you work 12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, at minimum wage. If you or a family member needs an operation, you have to sell your house. It's not a matter of working hard. You can't pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

There's a lot to be said of pulling yourself up and getting ahead with hard work. That attitude is a good thing. But there is a limit to it, and thats where its imperative that society has things that help create opportunities. As with most ideas, a pure form of a single idea doesn't work. It takes some of multiple philosophies blended together.

6 RepliesEdited by LordZoltan: 8/30/2015 6:03:18 AMSomeone else's help? In what form does this help come? I'm not talking about someone lifting you off of the ground, despite the fact that most of us can simply stand up without assistance. No, I'm talking about that Obama drivel you're spouting about individuals being unable to achieve success without others to "help" them. Now I'm very familiar with teamwork. That's where everyone works toward a common goal. And then the t.e.a.m. acronym: together everyone achieves more. But I don't think you're taking about teamwork. I think you are attempting to espouse some liberal progressive (damn labels) propaganda in an effort to discredit hard working Americans. "You're not hard working Bob! You were only able to complete that job because Cindy was there with you". "Dave, I can't believe you have the audacity to think that your driving record has anything to do with your driving! No sir! That success was only achieved because safety kept talking to you about being a safe driver" "John, seriously? You think that the record profits you pulled in for the company this last quarter is attributed to your go get em attitude and outstanding salesmanship? Think again" Liberal progressives. Always trying to push forth the marxist idea of everyone being equal despite glaring differences. Never wanting to admit that there are those that excel in everything they do, while others are content to do the bare minimum to squeak by. Always going on about fairness. Hey slick, life isn't fair. That's something you might want to think about. More to follow.

It's hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, if you have no boots, no legs, or arms. Plus you have to be in a position to recognize when opportunity is knocking.

3 RepliesEdited by U6757109: 8/29/2015 7:10:56 PMConservatives are sociopaths who adhere to the "every man for himself" (survival of the fittest) worldview. If humans cooperated and educated each other in real values like empathy, environmentalism, morality, egalitarianism and rationality... we could truly achieve the potential humanity has the capability to achieve. Instead progress is slowed down by Regressive Conservatives who continue to bolster the flawed monetary system (which operates on depravity and scarcity), push religious dogma down everyone's throats and deny people basic human rights. These type of people are afraid of change and will forever be remembered as "Regressives" when children 5,000 years from now read about the insane religious sociopaths who once lived in a corrupt country called the United States which denied blacks, women and gays basic human rights and worshipped a character named Jesus Christ and created/worshipped a system in which would cause inevitable poverty in large numbers. Be wary of these Regressives who fear change and are immune to new ideas. They could be your mother, father, best friend, even your child.
