"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps"
I see this phrase a lot from the conservative crowd in the US. Work hard, earn your rewards; pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
Well, have you ever tried pulling yourself up by your bootstraps? It can't be done. You fall over. You need someone else's help in order to do it.
When you use that phrase to support your philosophy that you can make it on your own, it really means the opposite.

16 RepliesIf you have a cruddy job, you work 12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, at minimum wage. If you or a family member needs an operation, you have to sell your house. It's not a matter of working hard. You [i]can't[/i] pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

There's a lot to be said of pulling yourself up and getting ahead with hard work. That attitude is a good thing. But there is a limit to it, and thats where its imperative that society has things that help create opportunities. As with most ideas, a pure form of a single idea doesn't work. It takes some of multiple philosophies blended together.

Always trying to push forth the marxist idea of everyone being equal despite glaring differences. Never wanting to admit that there are those that excel in everything they do, while others are content to do the bare minimum to squeak by. Always going on about fairness. Hey slick, life isn't fair. It's hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, if you have no boots, no legs, or arms. Plus you have to be in a position to recognize when opportunity is knocking.

These type of people are afraid of change and will forever be remembered as "Regressives" when children 5,000 years from now read about the insane religious sociopaths who once lived in a corrupt country called the United States which denied blacks, women and gays basic human rights and worshipped a character named Jesus Christ and created/worshipped a system in which would cause inevitable poverty in large numbers. Be wary of these Regressives who fear change and are immune to new ideas. They could be your mother, father, best friend, even your child.
