Air Force - Destiny Insult

So I'm currently making efforts to join the USAF and become an Airman. My friends all smoke weed and party and have been somewhat trying to talk me out of it. The other night my friend pissed me off so much... He says, "I don't think you should join dude to be honest you never wanted to go until you started playing Destiny and first person shooters." For the record I've wanted to join since I graduated High School and it was always a lingering thought before that. Now I'm 6 years out of school and I feel like I messed up not joining earlier. My family supports my decision so if I can get this waiver I'm going for sure. I guess I'm here to argue against the idea that FPS games (especially Destiny) "brainwash" people into joining The Armed Forces. Looking to talk to some Guardians who serve in any of the branches doesn't have to be the Air Force business lol. Thank you for serving your country wherever you are. To all the hippie guardians..."shut up" Update: Wow so many of you have offered some kind words as well as words of wisdom. So I'm definitely not going to choose Security Forces lol. Sounds horrible according to most of you. Thank you to every last one of you. I want to reply to each of you but I need to do stuff as well. I didn't expect so much support but again thank you all. I'll be sure to update you guys with my progress.

  • lmao at the idea you could be brainwashed to join the air force by a first person shooter. if anything, its like the opposite effect. "Dude, this running around getting shot at seems rough, I'll join the air force and not have to worry bout that shit"

      • I played plenty of games before joining. Former 82nd paratrooper (computer nerd). Now Air Force reserved jet mechanic (C5). I don't think playing video games has a large correlation as to joining. Early on, NCOs and drill sergeants always asked everyone why they joined. I didn't hear a single person bring up video games. The military can offer a lot of positives. One thing recruiters don't bring up much is security clearances. If you get an Intel job or any job that offers a clearance you can sit pretty when you get out. College benefits are great. Insurance is great. If you aren't yet sure what you want to do in life, give it a shot.

      • I retired last year as Master Sergeant after serving 22 yrs in the Air Force. I had great career maintaining aircraft and do not regret serving. Serving is not for everyone. I joined at 17 right after H.S. and the time just flew by. The benefits, opportunities, travel, experiences, education, training, meeting new people from around the world served me well. Talk to a good recruiter and don't let them BS you into a career that they need to fill to meet quota. Some specialties have a high turnover. Think about a job that can translate to outside civilian life. I continue to maintain aircraft today as a civilian making decent money while receiving a monthly military retirement check and inexpensive medical benefits for me and my family. Job opportunities for vets are good because of experience and varied training. Think about it and I wish U well.

      • My oldest, whose in marine boot camp now. Was in early enlist program. Started the program a year and a half ago. He never played any games until about 6 months ago. I think he started because he assumed others would have also. Common ground. He just wasn't interested in them. He enjoyed them and was competitive, but was never addicted to gaming. Don't listen to your "friends". To serve your country and protect our freedom is a great calling. You will never be sorry you stood up to the challenge. God bless.

      • The air force is far from armed forced man...unless you choose maintenance(fighters) or security forces...then get ready to get bent over

        • I've been retired for almost 2 years this December from the Air Force. Probably the best 20 yrs of my life. Been to great places, meet some good friends, and my wife of 13 years. Do it if its what you want.

        • Do it! The travel opportunities are cool. Also, they get better food than the other branches.

        • I'm currently active duty. I'd say go for it. Try not to become security forces or a crew chief and your set.

        • I was in the air force for 6 six years, made tech sgt, got out with a bachelors and now I'm one semester from my masters (all paid by my GI Bill). I say join but find a job that transitions well into the civilian realm if you decide to get out early. I had a great time while serving. I have been to places that most can't even pronounce (both fun and dangerous). I also made some life long friends that will continue to be my brothers and sisters in arms. One piece of advice: do your job in the military but make that shit work for you too. Get your education, take advantage of the training courses, and network with people (ie potential employers). Sorry that it's kinda long
BTW, I'm only 31
• Im in right now (actually deployed typing this)I am in the Air force, well the air guard and have been for 8 years nows. Ive met tons of cool people, had some of the best moments of my life with randoms all over the world and this was way before destiny or CoD.You could be playing mario kart or something and they would say you want to join for that reason. In the end its your life and you gotta do what ya gotta do. in 5-10 years you'll look back at your friends and they'll still be getting high and probably have a couple of kids working at wal mart living in a double wide. Do what you need to make a better life for yourself not them.
