They take advantage of Buyer's Stockholm Syndrome and Vegas casino marketing tactics that allow them to put a price on practically anything no matter how insignificant. It's a disgusting trend that has become rampant in the games industry these days (people used to joke about these things happening back when DLC was on the horizon). But as with anything that goes "mainstream" and brings in lots of revenue, corporate slime ball tactics become more and more common, and sadly more accepted. Developers lose the passion that got them into the industry because they're constantly under pressure with deadlines and financial red tape constricting their overall creative visions in the long run, leaving games feeling empty and rushed (while in actuality they're gutted and sold off in scraps). Destiny's story and the overall potential of this game is a very dark pinnacle of this. But the fact that even as it is, Destiny's base functionality allows for a deal of fun. So just imagine what the experience would have been had they simply given the buyer's what was promised fresh out the package. They'd have a cash cow, plus the respect and loyalty they've lost and continue to lose.

  • Well said, I hate that it's more about the money than the quality of the games now. I've completely given up preordering anything from being disappointed way too many times.

I could go into detail of why the AAA game industry was faltering due to high budget cost and little Return on Investment (ROI) during last generation game development, but I nor you have the time to write/read such jargon. (if you are interested, there are plenty of articles to read on the matter.) I will mention that Destiny is a new franchise and like most successful new franchises Activision made the decision to invest record breaking numbers into their marketing budget & released a 3-6 month DLC campaign cycle. Their investors have received a viable ROI. Understand this trend is here to stay because it is one of the only viable options for developers to produce AAA titles, especially in the first year of a new generation of consoles. The upside to this! The more profit Destiny receives and the more investors see on their return, the greater freedom Bungie will receive on their future titles. While it's not the greatest game ever made, Destiny holds a special roll in having created a new genre of gaming for FPS. Bungie will hone in on a great formula for designing the future of this new style of game & Activision's investors will grant more leeway for them to design an experience to increase community happiness- not because investors care about you (they love money) but it's a common business practice to retain consumer happiness during relaunch cycles of a product's lifespan. Most successful franchises do this, the most relatable one is World of Warcraft- started out with major issues/frustrations with a sole focus on making the business profitable and now they have a dedicated and pleased fanbase. There's still a great deal of hope.

  • This is spot on. The amount of potential destiny had is utterly mind boggling. Sure more content is on the horizon, but I want it now ;)
