Whilst I understand where you're coming from. Form doesn't equal function with the Exo. The first thing to remember is that they are not robots. Robots are mindless automata that perform menial tasks, slaves if you will. They have no awareness and cannot move beyond their programmed function. For the lore of Destiny the Exo were created as A.I. A replication of human thought patterns. Designed for war but thinking like people. One of the strongest drives in human intelligence is identity and shape is central to that in human experience. The Exo were built but in the time since they have shaped themselves in the creation of identity. Or it could just be to appeal to gamers who are also of different genders.

1 ReplyFirst from our perspective humans have a tendency to create things in their own image and shape, even so far as sci fi goes. 2nd the Exo's were made to be individual and sentient, to ask questions and develop themselves. Having this characteristic would mean that they could consider themselves male as well as female, so if anything Bungie covered their ass on that one.

Exo's are where originally made as the key to human immortality but something went wrong. When the Darkness came they where repurposed as war machines but then a subroutine illistrated on a titan cloak unlocked the human the was repressed for war but they still came out slightly different. Because of the original failure and clashes between the war machine and human the exo must have portions of there memory wiped in order to remain insane. But thats just a theory..... a poorly writen theory.
