Free DLC for games

Co-Founder of CD Projeckt Red Marcin Iwiński has now commented on how free DLC should be a standard in the video game industry and he is abso-friggin-lutely right about that. free DLC has to be the industry standard and paid DLC the exception and not the other way around http://www.destructoid.com/witcher-3-dev-wants-free-dlc-to-be-an-industry-standard-307173.phtml?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook

Did you read the article? They gave out free add-ons, which are tiny additions to a game and a fraction of something like Destiny's DLC. They also go on to say that they will have paid DLC expansions... which is exactly like Destiny... Destiny doesn't have add-ons, they have expansions. Those guys are also both publisher and developer of their game, so they can set prices and release whatever DLC however they want, unlike Bungie who is tied to a publisher. It's easy for them to say "this should be the standard" when they've got everything in their favor.

    • I don't see how people can complain so much about paying for dlc. How many hours of entertainment did you get from destiny so far? 100? 300? 1000? That seams like the best return on your money possible for entertainment. And Holy Crap they want 40 MORE dollars for 100s of MORE hours of entertainment? I work 2 hours at work, to buy the dlc and I get 100s of hours out of it, totally worth it.

Ok so i am putting this here for you to see i want you to read the entire post and not the first sentence and make a replay. I will start by saying that the concept of free DLC is one that every gamer wants and will take if given a chance. This idea falls apart in function though. Lets just use a different example for argument reason. Lets say you worked as a construction worker. If you went to work every day to build a building and it took your company 5 years to make it and then you get your final pay check thats great for you but once the company gets the money left after materials costs, worker fees, unexpected surprises there might not be enough to keep the company afloat. Now that the buildings built the company must repair it for free every few months have more lost revenue, The only way the company to make money then is to offer to modify thing to make money Now that the long winded example is out of the way apply it to a Development company and reply with a well formed argument not just a blowoff comment of a video link/ weblink

              • It's not unreasonable to say that when people put their time at their job making a product that they should be paid for it. Buying the thing they make with money is what allows them to get paid and keep their job. Free DLC is best specifically for the micro-transaction model, where their revenue is being supported by the latter and not the former. The free DLC is what gets people to come back to your shitty game and buy more hats.

I think you should read the entire article. Witcher only gives the small useless items and crap as free dlc's. When they make bigger ones (ones that actually add content) they will charge for it. Of course I'm sure they will call those expansions or something and not dlc.
However, the Polish developer doesn't necessarily intend to take that approach with all add-ons. In the coming months, two Witcher 3 expansions are planned that will be for purchase. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are more sizable than the 16 pieces of free content, as they're said to add around 30 hours of gameplay.
Ps, if you think these "expansions" weren't already substantially complete (like how some people think TDB or HoW were), I have a bridge id like to sell you. Lol.

                        • You're too late and if it's that big if an issue with you then you either need a cheaper hobby or just a new one. Also it's understandable why dlc it mainly paid for and not free mostly, especially for expansions which are major content updates. Game developers use of a lot more resources and time then they used to making games because they have gotten so popular. The ability for them to grow a single game to add to it after it's initial release is awesome. But in no way should the majority of that be free. You paid for what you get up front are happy with that and if they throw any free dlc your way it's a bonus, not a standard that should mainly be tjat way. Also in relation to destiny, none expansion players have gotten quite a bit if free stuff from the expansions for not even having them and even not having them they can still reach max level as of now.

                          • Small DLCs should be free like TW3's dlcs. I'd rather have 16 small dlcs than nothing at all.

Fine then, Then you should work on 1 payment for 10 years, Would you do it? Let me repeat, Would the OP expect a whole company, Built to make money give away free content as standard? While still be able to give their employees their monthly checks? I doubt that, Let alone the cost they are giving Sony and xbox to update and release their games.

TTK should be free to all year one players who bought all the content of the year one BETA. More than anything as a way apology for the constant mistakes and changes of direction and a show that loyal custom is valued.

                                  • You want free DLC then we'll end up with microtransactions and $5 shader lottery boxes for a 98% chance at a common shader and 2% chance for a decent shader. Bungie is not a charity, they are a business. They need to pay their employees and having them put in thousands of work hours as volunteers probably wouldn't go over well.

The only difference between free dlc and content included in free updates is the amount of marketing cumshots generated by it. As it is, paying for more content (in the form of expansions, not just gear) is not a problem in itself. The problem is how it's often done, and more people need to understand that. While TW3's DLC thing was good, they still charge for the actual expansions, and the free stuff is a few cosmetics, some armour sets and things like new game + (which could have and should have been in the game anyway) and extra finisher animations (which could have just been part of the update). Don't even try to deny that most of it was done for marketing. Also don't forget that the sales of a game alone are not always enough to sustain what it needs or could benefit from the most, and paid expansions basically serve the same purpose as subscription fees.

                                      • Okay, but CD Projekt Red only offered a few contracts, some armor, and some aesthetics for free. The lasting DLC for The Witcher 3 still costs around $25.
