Chapter 44: From The View Of A Ghost
"Stop that."
From below there was few distressed clicks followed by a squeal of protest. Two small arms raised up to try and capture it once again.
"I said stop that."
No, those arms did not falter or stop. Instead, it seemed more determined to get to it.
"Guardian, speak to your son. He doesn't know when to stop." There was laughter after it had said this and its Guardian scooped up her child, bringing it close to her chest.
"Ghost, he doesn't know better. He just likes you." The Ghost whirred slightly, it's eye blinking down at the Guardian's child in curiosity. It was somewhat thankful that it had not been subject to a toy once more by the Guardian's child. Flying everywhere while something below kept tail was slightly unnerving. But the Ghost shook itself at what its Guardian had said. So this Fallen liked it? Some things were strange. As it pondered, the Fallen child raised its two small arms once more, and the Ghost floated slowly in front of his hands. Four bright blue eyes stared, awed and happy for it to come so close.
"I think he really likes you, Ghost. You might be considered his father in his eyes." The Ghost scoffed, thinking that it was preposterous. It was a machine of the Light, an instrument born to seek out warriors. It didn't think this Fallen child would come to think of him as a parent. Ghosts were considered an it. Having the voice of a male may inquire to call it a he but many really didn't care about such things.Yet being called a father felt like it gave the small machine more purpose. Gave it a sense of something more that it thought it would be. Somehow...it felt nice.
"He is strange, Vala." Yet somewhere in his wiring it felt a spark of pride and affection surge for the Fallen. The Fallen child, no, Bolt, was a strange creature indeed but it was quite nice to know it cared about it too.
Before it could do anything, four hands enclosed over it and Bolt clicked happily at his victory. The Ghost whirred slightly but settled down, not moving. When the hand cage was opened slightly, it's blue eye gazed up at the inquisitive stare Bolt gave it.
"Hello there." Bolt squeaked and closed his hands once more, the Ghost engulfed in the dark again. A few seconds later, a small gap and a ray of light shine down on it. For a few seconds Bolt's eyes looked into its one blue eye.
"Hello again." And again, the hands closed over it. A sudden idea popped up in its mind and when Bolt opened his hands, it closed his eye. Only when did it hear the small distressed clicks did it open its eye with a small blue flash.
"Boo!" Bolt squeaked, closing his hands and squealed happily. Vala laughed, the sound comforting and light. For a few minutes, the new game of peekaboo continued. Bolt never seemed to be tired of it and the Ghost was happy enough continue. Vala had let Bolt down but it did not disturb their fun, saying she was going to sharpen her blades.
The lighthearted game came to a screeching halt when Bolt did not squeak or click in joy when the Ghost popped out. Instead, it was transferred to his lower set of arms and the other two went to his face. In one swift movement, Bolt removed his breather and the Ghost could clearly see the mandibles filled to the brim with sharp teeth. Dread filled it the more Bolt stared and purred.
"No. Do not do what I think you might do, Bolt. Stop. Desist. Hey!" The Ghost panicked when Bolt tried to place it in his mouth. The machine stared down the rows of razor sharp baby teeth and struggled not to end up as scrap metal.
"Guardian! Vala! Help me!! Bolt is trying to eat me!" Bolt only squeaked, trying to being the Ghost closer to his mouth. It still struggled though and soon enough, the female Hunter appeared and freed it from the clutches of the Fallen. Bolt began to click rapidly, his four arms trying to reach to it again but the Ghost floated out of reach.
"Bad." It scolded, shaking itself from the drool on its shell. "Don't eat me, Bolt." Small tears gathered at the corners of Bolt's eyes and suddenly he was crying. Vala tried to quiet him but The Fallen only cried harder, struggling against her hold. Finally setting the upset child down, the Ghost and Guardian watched with worry and concern as Bolt hiccuped slightly.
"You go fix that." Vala said, giving it a disapproving look. The Ghost whirred, it's eye looking to its Guardian in astonishment. Had it heard right? It was at no fault!! But before a word of protest could be voiced, Vala retreated out of the cave, leaving an upset Fallen and a flabbergasted Ghost behind.
"Your mother confuses me, Bolt." Having his name heard, Bolt momentarily stopped his wailing to look at the Ghost questioningly. After a few seconds of silence though, the small Dreg started to tear up again.
"Hey hey no crying. I'm here." Trying to soothe him, the Ghost floated in front of Bolt. It was surprised when four arms outstretched and four bright blue eyes looked to it pleadingly as if he wanted it to pick him up like his mother. Feeling somewhat saddened at its smaller size, the machine floated into the small arms and felt them close around it in a hug.
"I'm sorry I'm not big like my Guardian." One blue eye peeked up to see that Bolt didn't care one bit. The Fallen had his eyes closed, his body hunching over to wrap around it as much as he could. Again it felt a surge of affection for Bolt as the Fallen began purring. The Ghost started buzzing in response, the vibrations instantly soothing Bolt even more.
"I'm sorry I scolded you earlier. I Didn't mean to raise my voice." Bolt's eyes opened slightly to regard the words before closing once more.
An idea formed in its mind once more and with a bright blue flash, a Hunter cloak appeared overhead. The cloth gently landed on Bolt's head, making the Fallen squeak in surprise. Thinking that it might have scared him, the cloak instantly vanished with another bright flash. There was a few seconds of silence before Bolt broke out in rapid clicks and bouncing about with the little Ghost still in his arms.
"Do you like that?" As if answering the question, it made the cloak reappear once more and let it drop down over Bolt. The Dreg squealed but then started walking around in confusion. Suddenly, the cloak was gone once again, tucked away to storage. Bolt jumped up and down, happy and excited from the cloak disappearing and then reappearing like magic.
"I think you like that."
It didn't know how long it's Guardian was gone, but Bolt seemed to not care either as he played with the various things the Ghost would materialize for him. Both didn't even notice when she did return, her footsteps quiet as she watched them play. A fond smile was on her face, her eyes staring at the scene with content and love.
If Ghosts ever had mouths, it would have been smiling lovingly down at the Fallen as it watched it tromp and crawl about. The floor was littered with various items, but it did not care one single bit. Its mind was solely on Bolt. How each little squeak made a strange echo in its metal wiring. How every outstretched hand and gentle hold made it feel safe and happy. Halfway through, the little Traveler's instrument began to think it was defected but banished that thought the longer it hovered near Bolt.
"I think he really likes you, Ghost. You might be considered his father in his eyes." A feeling of pride coursed through it at the thought of what Vala had said earlier. He was a proud Ghost. Proud to have found a Guardian with a heart of gold and to have shared such a little treasure known as Bolt.
Eventually though, Bolt began to tire. Not even an hour later, the small Fallen had fell asleep, his breathing deep and calm. The Ghost materialized a small blanket and placed it over the slumbering child and slowly floated down. Coming to sit beside Bolt's head, the machine closed it's eye like it was tired.
"You're such a treasure, Bolt. I'm proud of you."
