I realize I am probably an outlier to most of your situations but I've only been playing a couple of months and have a lvl 34 Titan. I just recently made a warlock and hunter which are lvl's 2 and 3 respectively. I want to level them up but have been really busy at work recently and don't have the time. My question is I have acquired some legendary and exotic gear for warlock and hunter while playing as my Titan, will this affect their levels when the taken king drops or not? I've heard the if your a 34 then you'll start as a 34 and I've heard we will scan your inventory arguments. But what about a lvl 2 character that has higher level gear in their inventory? I'm going to attempt to get them up in time but just in case, I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this. Thanks.
Edit: I really appreciate the answers so far but none have answered my root question. I understand that my level 34 will be a lvl 34, that was not the question. I also agree with the @they will stay the same" answer since that was what I thought would happen. I'm really looking for substantial evidence either for or against the question I'm asking not speculation.
DOES THE GEAR MATTER OR DOES THE LEVEL MATTER?

From what I heard, your LIGHT level will remain the same but you will be level 20. Light level will determine your power level but you will level up with xp. This makes sense because of you take a look at your character screen now it will say you are whatever light level you are BUT your level is 20.

Edited by BigDaddyE47: 8/21/2015 4:02:08 PMMy understanding of what they said on the twitch stream is that all of the gear your character owns will be factored in to determining your starting year 2 level so for example if I am normally a level 34 but I buy and equip a bunch of green gear just before year 2 starts my character is still going to be level 34(as long as i didn't delete all my level 34 stuff). Light Level is being grandfathered in – so if you are level 34 when you start The Taken King, don’t ditch anything ahead of release because your gear will be taken into account when your Light Levels are transferred over. This includes gear stashed in your vault so don’t worry about wearing your best gear all the time.
