Does anyone else not trust someone higher than 1.8kd?

I'll start by saying this, I consider myself a better than average console FPS player. A number of years ago I was invited to the COD expo free of charge, where I got to compete in the million dollar tournament. When I am trying to win, it is only on very rare occasions that I don't land in first place on my team. That's my disclaimer. In destiny I usually hover around a 1.5 kd. Why so low for someone who is supposed to be a good player? Because I like to test unpopular builds and guns (I have a Payment IV with hipfire and secret round that I am in love with), and I intelligently play to the objectives. What I've personally found about Guardians rocking 1.8 or above is that they almost exclusively use the best meta builds and weapons possible. I don't see much experimentation or exploration in regard to character building or weapon rolls. This is fine, albeit a bit boring. What gets me about many of these players, is that they often get these extra kills at the expense of the team. What do I mean by that? Not playing the objective, not defending the objective, not defending relevant checkpoints, rushing/flipping spawns just to get extra kills, and running away from objectives in conflict. I would much rather be on a cooperative team of 1.5's than a group of boring/rigid +2.0's who work opportunistically off of the teams back. What do my fellow guardians think? Edit: Nearly 100 replies! I just want to make sure that everyone understands what I'm saying in this thread, as it seems to be getting lost in translation. I am saying that MOST players in my experience that are above a 1.8 are either not good team players, or they've used meta babies almost exclusively after each patch. I am not saying that ALL players are like this. There are a select few wonderfully skilled individuals out there, but most people think that includes them just because of their padded kd. I am seeing a lot of people in here with exorbitant kds claiming they are also excellent teammates, who play solo, and use only the least relevant builds and guns. By the very nature of that stat I am not inclined to believe you.

REMINDER: This post is home for the people who want to justify for having a low K/D. Also, your most kills in PvP is with a Shotgun... Keep trying bud.

    • As a 2.0+ player I can definitely confirm this. As much as I hate to say it I don't really capture objectives, it's usually only the first flag of the match and then after that I rarely capture anything. But despite this I do try to contribute to the team through kills and almost always comes first (sorry if I come out as a narcissist) but even then I wouldn't really call myself a team player. However I will say that I usually refuse to use the OP meta crucible weapons (Thorn, TLW etc). Then again, hopscotch pilgrim and vex isn't far from OP either...

      • Outside the meta I do have a nice scout build, but when a Thorn can rock me from the same distance? I'm done yo. Additionally, a lot if not all maps do not cater to a distanced, passive play style. It's too easy to close a gap at the moment as the current state of blink is too quick. OP jelly o my K/D tho

      • I think I do pretty alright. Sure I use the best weapons but why disadvantage yourself with lesser weapons. I also like to change it up every now and then. I pretty much exclusively play my warlock btw

I see where you're coming from but you're basically saying the 1.5k/d players are more reliable and better in general. That's too much of a generalization and pretty much false. I have a 2.4 K/D and I have the least deaths, most kills, most caps and most assists 9/10 times when just playing Clash or Control. I would definitely say I am better than someone with a 1.5 K/D who had a small amount of deaths, a decent amount of kills, most caps and most assists. I came across a squad of 5 in a fireteam all repping the flawless sweaty emblem so I got excited that I've have a heated match. I ended up destroying them alone back to back games, the went out of their way to add me and invite me so I joined. I checked their K/Ds and most were at 1.5-1.8 but their win percentage was ridiculous, probably because the play in a fireteam so often. My point here is when playing in a fireteam with all good players, you'll generally not get as many kills because your teammates are more at your skill level. When I joined them I still did really well, just not as well as when I went against them. K/D is manipulated super easily. Someone who's a lone wolf like myself has the chance to get a ridiculous K/D if they're good.

Alot of the higher k/d guys also play alot with large fireteams. And since bungies matchmaking allows large fireteams to play all randoms theirs going to be a one sided matches that inflates k/d. In my opinion guys who have a high k/d and only play with randoms are the only truly skilled players in this game. If you can maintain a 1.5+. K/d with randoms all while playing the objective, you're much better than a guy who plays with a clan 90% of the and maintains a 2+. Communication is integral because of the speed of characters and small maps so large fireteams have a massive advantage.

          • While I 100% agree with your articulate posting, it is also true that Destiny will never be a competitive shooter. The maps are imbalanced, the strategies are very basic and nooby, and the fan-base is on the juvenile side to say the least. There are competitive games out there, you clearly know that. Just don't expect much from Destiny and you will easily step over the low expectation bar that they have set for themselves. This game has become a joke to real gamers.

              • Nope, I have a friend at 1.9, he tests out all sorts of builds and is simply one of the best pvpers I have ever met in any game which includes competitive cod,

              • Agreed. I prefer objective. I hate sitting in a cap point and see red flashing around my radar and no friendlies in sight. Only to die and then find them clustered between enemy objectives playing clash.

              • Too big of a generalization IMO. Having a 2+ K/D is definitely way above average, no matter which weapon you use. Also, think of all the players with a negative KD who use meta builds... It's not always about the loadout.

                • I hover around a 2.3 and I experiment. I play exclusively as a Titan, the class people say is the worst in PvP. I used to use shotguns, but that was when Felwinter's first dropped and I just wanted to wreak havoc. :p I use sniper rifles exclusively now. I use scout rifles and guns like the 55A-Allfate.

The whole point to me... is to kill & stay alive. If dude has 20 kills and 5 deaths, that's plus 1500 points. If you're running and taking objectives with 15 kills and 10 deaths, that's only 500 points. The objectives are nice... but deaths are worth wayyy more. This isn't Battlefield. With that being said, I'm a team player. Hail The 55s!!!

                  • Ok, here's how I've played the game so far: Always solo, every single game across all toons. Also never quit when paired up against teams and such. If I have to quit - will do so right at start of when I joined a round, and never after having played some. Used scout and pulse when Suros and Vex were the rage. Played around with exotic HCs and dropped them after they got boring quick. Running with NLB, low impact pulse, or anything interesting I'm levelling up. Basically like you - tried different weapons to see which felt comfortable. And still do so. Though I disagree on the opportunistic bit - often I'll not finish first but because of my sniping (incessantly sometimes) on the map some areas do not get populated or remain avoided by enemy. This passive help accounts for a win much more than is evident. That said, -blam!- the meta. I'll go all purple or just use something interesting than the Thorn-TLW bs that is prevalent.

                  • You don't need to play obj, Control isn't domination where the scores goes up every seconds. I dropped 6k + score with no capture every game because i get kills does that mean that I'm not contributing? Rather than being the "OBJ Players" in my team and go capture A flag when we already have C and B and mess up the spawn...*face palm*

                    • It's not difficult to get on a good team and pub stomp till your k/d is high. Easy to check game history and see how someone performs without their clan in the game. Usually not well or average. Go figure.
