I will start with saying: I have played PC MMO’s exclusively for over ten years. Destiny has been the first and only game to make me not only purchase a console, but it will likely be the only title I ever play on my Xbox One. I cannot praise Destiny enough.
That said, it’s lacking in several areas that set it very far behind in terms of its MMO features. Therefore, I would like to make an argument in favor of a relatively small quality of life addition that goes much further than most people initially think. That is the Transmogrification. But, let me first start with why we can discount other typical MMO features that aren’t currently present, then why I have focused on Transmogs.
We don’t need a player based economy. Look to Diablo 3 from Blizzard as the example of what not to do, and how it was overcome. It illustrates how our Devs are on a solid track. Another missing point would be the lack of an imbedded social system and associated perks. This role is largely filled by the console networks and each player’s friends list. The last missing system would be crafting. While it would be nice to have; it would also be a large investment of time and resources for something that is just nice to have, but never needed.
Transmog on the other hand provides two much needed benefits to the destiny user and the greater community. And for those who aren’t familiar with this concept. Transmogrification is taking two of the same type of item “Shotgun A” and “Shotgun B”. Shotgun A is your favorite, you’ve carried it for six months now and you love the way it looks. However, Shotgun B just dropped in a raid tonight. It’s hideous, but it has higher stats and better traits. So we take the stats and traits from Shotgun B and combine it with the look and appearance of Shotgun A. Now I have Shotgun C and it looks the way I want and it hits just as hard as your new ugly shotgun did.
As for the benefits. First, it further strengthens the connection a player has to his or her Guardian. The ability to customize the appearance of your avatar is, as important as, picking the clothing you wear in reality (some of us spend as many hours in both). It makes a statement by portraying how you want others to view you. Your first impression isn’t the same in Destiny. But the difference between armor skins can be as drastic as a fine suit to cut off jeans.
Second, and more important is the longevity it adds to the game. We are at the end of year one and as we move forward, we will be encouraged to dismantle our armor and move on. To set aside our weapons to gather dust in the vault. All in favor of items that are more powerful in the next expansions. With this concept, what need will you have to defeat the Vault or brave the Prison by year three of four? None, as it stands right now. And the armor you spent weeks or even months acquiring with be a forgotten thing of the past. Just as worse, new players will never experience those places for themselves as they will have no need for vastly outdated gear. Most will race through other content in an effort to catch up.
If however, you have the ability to carry those images and skins with you into future expansions. Then you also give a reason for other players to brave the depths and acquire the same look they see on you. I have also read that the Devs prime reason for not incorporating Transmog, is that they want each item to be unique and to tell a story. But what story will your House of wolves rifle tell in two years? None; no one will ever see it, as it will sit in the vault or be shredded in favor of space for a better weapon. Some new player will not likely even know it exists. What story does that help tell?
One of Destiny’s best draws for players is the ability to obtain items, keep them, and watch your character grow with them. Why put a shelf life on those items? Wouldn’t it be better for veteran players to say “this is where I came from, this is what we went through”.
For the sake of a complete argument. You can also allow everyone to continue Ascending weapons as we go, gating our progress accordingly. We will continue to have the same weapon or armor the whole way through. However, this is more difficult as the Devs need to get the timing right so players don’t have an unfair advantage earlier in the expansion. Also this could negate the desire to acquire any new weapons for some players.
In closing. Other players have asked for this feature, I’m far from the first. However, I wanted to reemphasize Transmog. Hopefully it may rise higher on the priority list. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I would like to see all previous gear reintroduced into the game with updated stats, with the vendors rotating them weekly. More visual diversity is always good to make our Guardians feel more personal. Edit. Have anyone ever gotten any answer from Bungie as to [i]why[/i] they removed the old gear instead of upgrading their stats so that we have more choice?
